Due to his education, Unamuno was specially concerned with the study of the languages of Spain. His writings about Castilian, Basque and, to a lesser extent, Catalan, reveal a transforming attitude towards the academic language and an approach to the ‘living’ language, the one spoken by the people in the streets of towns and cities.

Iberismo is the political movement which aims to creat of a single State in the Iberian Peninsula... more Iberismo is the political movement which aims to creat of a single State in the Iberian Peninsula, justified because of its geographical, social and cultural unity –not uniformity–. The second half of the 19th century is the period of time in which Iberismo was at its very peak. Many newspapers at the time spread pro-Iberismo messages. 'La Iberia', a successful Madrid newspaper, was one of the most important, and its publications during the Bienio Progresista (1854-1856), a two-year period of left-wing governments, showed a liberal and progressive approach to the future Iberian State. The frequency of pro-Iberismo messages published by 'La Iberia' and its concerns over the Portuguese political affairs turns the study of this paper into a basic subject to understand how we can classify Iberismo in the stream of political movements of the 19th century. Besides, it is also a critical instrument to revise the history of the relationships between Spain and Portugal.

'El Español' was printed with the approval of the Foreign Office and its editor was the priest José María Blanco White, born in Seville and exiled in the English capital city. In these 'Cartas' (letters), Blanco reflects a deep concern about the situation of the "American-Spanish people" and defend the emancipation movements and the cries of liberty. Juan Sintierra proposed a solution for the American matter based on the access of the colonies to autonomy, which cost him the rejection and hate of his liberal fellows. Besides, the 'Cartas de Juan Sintierra' expose hard criticism towards the work of the Cortes de Cádiz: they were, according to Blanco, far away from the reality of the country and absorbed in the political constituent theory.

Which message about the crisis has Bild provided to its readers? How is represented the complexity of the crisis in the vocabulary of a tabloid? Has Bild led a propaganda campaign against Greece? This article attempts to provide answers to these questions through discourse analysis. The result confirms that Bild, with a discourse riddled with stereotypes, exaggerations and half-truths, presents Germany as a hardworking, honest and responsible country, as opposed to squandering, corruption and ruin in Greece.

Abstract: This paper analyses the messages published in the mid--nineteenth century Madrid press in support of the setting of a customs union between Spain and Portugal. To this end, an interpretative model derived from discourse analysis is applied, focused on establishing relations between the keywords used by newspapers, textual message content and context of the historical--political period. The results of this analysis show the importance that certain Iberian customs union projects gained in Spain, and how these projects took as an explicit model, especially in the first years, the German Zollverein, i.e., the customs and trade union led by Prussia. Thus, based on the analysed documents, we can confirm the outstanding importance that Iberian Zollverein plans had in the development of Iberianism.
