Where property of knowledge (e.g. patents and copyrights) and contractbased knowledge exchange do not obtain network effectiveness because of prohibitive transaction costs in reducing uncertainty, we suggest a robust model for peer produced knowledge within a distributed setting. The peer produced knowledge exchange model relies upon a double loop knowledge conversion with symmetric incentives in a network since the production of actor specific knowledge makes any knowledge appropriation by use of property rights by the actors irrelevant. Without property rights in knowledge the actor network generates opportunity for incentive symmetry over a period of time. The model merges specific knowledge with knowledge from other actors into a decision support system specific for each actor in the network in recognition of actor role differences. The article suggests a set of 9 static and 5 dynamic propositions for the model to maintain symmetric incentives between different actor networks. The model is proposed for business networks.

Using data from a randomized survey experiment among 5,982 adult individuals of all ages, this article examines how gender conditions the compliance effects of different incentive treatments—each relating to the basic content of distinct types of personnel management practices. The findings indicate that males and females are more similar than different in terms of the effects of incentive treatments: Significant average effects are found for three of five incentive treatments, but gender does not appear to moderate these relationships.

Models for knowledge distribution is a rare commodity in the Health Care Administration. Distributed Knowledge Management (DKM) is a concept that originated as an abstraction of a business model prepared for the mechanical and agricultural industry but holds promises for a more general use. The contribution of this paper is to suggest a new business model based on DKM and show the relevance and applicability of this concept in a very new context of the Health Care Administration.

The reflected light from a cuticle area of 0.030 mm 2 is projected through the objective ocular of a stereomicroscope onto a photodiode. The photocurrent is converted to voltage and measured by a voltmeter. The method allows to distinguish objectively different shades of cuticle colour in wild type and mutant Drosophila.

A newly described mutant gene in Drosophila melanogaster suppresses the phenotype of the black mu... more A newly described mutant gene in Drosophila melanogaster suppresses the phenotype of the black mutation b (2-48.5), which is known to cause melanization of the cuticle through a deficiency of 13-alanine. The semi-dominant suppressor, Su(b) is X-linked and maps at 1-55.5 adjacent to or within the rudimentary locus(r) controlling the level of the first three enzymes in the biosynthesis of pyrimidines. The suppressor of rudimentary, su(r), known to block the degradation of uracil to ~alanine, enhances the melanization of the cuticle in the black mutant flies. This suppressor su(r) is epistatic over the suppressor of black resulting in an enhanced melanization in su(r) Su(b); b flies. Feeding the pyrimidine analogue 6-azathymine to wild type larvae gives rise to a partial phenocopy of black. Resistance against melanization by 6-azathymine is provided by Su(b). The analogue 6-azauracil normalizes the mutant black but not the double mutant su(r); b. It is proposed that Su(b) is a mutation in the regulatory gene for the formation of the first three enzymes in pyrimidine biosynthesis leading to overproduction of uracil. The degradation of this extra uracil into I?,-alanine would then permit the normal tanning of the cuticle in flies homo-or hemizygous for black.

All brewing strains had the same form II RDN1 gene cluster. The top fermenting strains yielded identical Sail restriction endonuclease fragment patterns (I) when probed with the HIS4 gene probe of plasmid pC503. The pattern corresponds to that found in genetic standard strain $288C. The bottom fermenting strains were all heterozygous for the HIS4 patterns I and II known to originate from homeologous regions of two chromosomes. Molecular hybridisation ofa LEU2 gene probe to SalI restricted DNA of the bottom fermenting yeast strains gave identical fragment patterns (III + IV), while a pattern designated II + III was most common in top fermenting strains. Two additional patterns were found among the latter. The transposable element Tyl from a genetic standard strain distinguishes the genotypes of various lager strains as well as those of top fermenting yeasts. Hybridisation of Tyl to EcoRI restricted DNA of Carlsberg lager strain BK 2246 yields four diagnostic fragments, while the DNA of Tuborg lager strain BK 2224 is characterized by an additional 5.5 kb fragment. Conversely Sail restricted DNA of the Carlsberg strain contains a 10 kb fragment absent from the genome of the Tuborg strain. Three different restriction fragment patterns are found after probing with the Tyl element among the Bavarian bottom fermenting yeasts. More complex patterns with at least 10 restriction fragments hybridising to the Tyl element are found among the top fermenting strains from the Munich collection. Five different genotypes have been identified among 9 strains tested. Tyl transposing elements will be helpful markers in the characterisation of improved brewing strains.

Although some companies already have introduced the role of a chief knowledge officer, knowledge management is not treated as a strategic endeavour. Furthermore, contributions from an academic point of view are scarce in the field of the strategic issues of knowledge management. This paper contributes with some insight in pointing out the strategic question that knowledge management might provide answers for: The efficiency issue of stategic positioning. Furthermore, the paper emphasises the distinction between symmetric and asymmetric incentives in business relations, and on this basis identifies the notion of Distributed Knowledge Management as a means for creating efficiency strategies with symmetric incentives in business relations. In this way a strategic agenda for knowledge management is identified.

MCs (bone oedema) in vertebrae are observed in 6 % of the general population and in 35-40 % of people with low back pain. These changes are strongly associated with low back pain. There are probably a mechanical cause and an infective cause that causes MC. Several studies on nuclear tissue from herniated discs have demonstrated the presence of low virulent anaerobic microorganisms, predominantly Propionibacterium acnes, in 7-53 % of patients. At the time of a herniation these low virulent anaerobic bacteria may enter the disc and give rise to an insidious infection. Local inflammation in the adjacent bone may be a

Based on three case studies we argue that whereas small organizations often may chose adoption of OSS expecting significant cost savings, a major barrier for larger organizations' adoption of OSS lies in the organizations' consolidation of the enterprise architectures, in addition to that OSS will not be adopted before satisfactory delivery and procurement models for OSS are established.

The incidence during the past 20 years has risen from about 40 to 60 cases per million per year. A series of 335 consecutive patients treated with primary radiation is presented. In one-third of all patients the tumour was localized in the supraglottic area; in women in more than half and in men in about one-fourth of the cases. The frequency of primary lymph node metastases in the supraglottic and the glottic tumours was 24% and 2% respectively. A multivariate analysis identified sex and tumour size as independent prognostic parameters of local control. Five-year survival corrected for intercurrent deaths was obtained in 59%) of all cases, in 56% of supraglottic and in 92% of glottic tumours. A multivariate analysis defined localization, tumour grade and stage as independent prognostic parameters of survival. Salvage surgery was performed in about 32% of the cases, total laryngectomy in 26%, and partial laryngectomy in 6%. The survival rate among all total laryngectomies was 5 5 %~ A tracheostomy during or before radiation treatment prior to total laryngectomy had no influence on complication rate, admission time or recurrence rate. The frequency of pharyngo-cutaneous fistulae in the entire series was 11.5%); after routine use of metronidazol, however, only 5.7%). Radical neck dissection was carried out in 7.8% of the cases, by far most in the supraglottic group, only a few in the glottic carcinomas, in three-fourth in connection with a laryngectomy and in one-fourth without local recurrence in the larynx.
