Research paper thumbnail of Evaluation of the publication activity of research teams by means of scientometric indicators

Current Science, Sep 10, 2000

Modified Garfield impact factors for journals as well as relative citedness of papers are applied as indicators because of differences among subfields in scientometric features of the publications assessed. Our experience has shown that the evaluation of real scientometric systems needs compromises among the parties interested and between the practical applicability and the theoretical requirements of scientometrics.

Trace Elements and Electrolytes, 2003

Heavy metal accumulation in higher concentration may inhibit enzyme activities, modify metabolic ... more Heavy metal accumulation in higher concentration may inhibit enzyme activities, modify metabolic pathways, influence acute-phase protein synthesis and gene expression. The presence of Zn, Cu, Cd, Mn and Ni can modulate the function of tumor suppressor protein p53. DNA repair system is a sensitive target for Ni and Cr ions, consequently, the risk of tumor formation may increase. Therefore, we were interested in whether the concentration of Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Ni and Cr elements in liver and bile in alimentary induced fatty liver would show any alteration compared to the controls in rats. Male Wistar rats were fed with fat-rich diet (2% cholesterol, 0.5% cholic acid (CA) or deoxycholic acid (DCA) and 20% sunflower oil added to the basal diet) for 12 days. Ten rats were kept on normal chow, 10 rats were fed with DCA and 10 rats with CA. Histopathological examination was performed to evaluate the tissue degeneration. Element concentrations were determined with ICP-OES. Significant changes were detected in the concentrations of Fe and Ni in the liver, but no significant decrease in Zn, Cu and Mn contents in this short-term experiment. The fatty liver accumulated Cr and Ni whereas the concentration of Fe, Zn, Ni, Cr enhanced in the bile. Significant increase in the concentration of Ni and Fe, and non-significant one of Zn in the bile was measured. The correlation between concentrations of the d-field elements in the liver were modified except Zn and Mn in hyperlipidemy. Consequently, attention should be paid to the lipid-rich diet consumption, because it may involve risk for accumulation of toxic elements in the liver.

Changes in the composition of bile may induce cholecystitis and cholelithiasis. For the study of the effect of metal elements in the bile on gallstone formation, element concentration in the gallstone (cholesterol and mixed pigment stones) and bile samples were measured. The samples were digested with a mixture of HNO 3 (5 ml) and H 2 O 2 (3 ml) in teflon vessels. The concentration of 23 elements (Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, S, Ti, V, Zn) in the bile fluid and gallstone samples were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The concentration of Cd, Hg, Li and V in the bile and V in the gallstone samples was below the detection limit in each case. Significant correlation was found between the concentration of Al-Ca (r=0.985), P-Mg(r=0.891), S-Mg(r= 0.893) in bile and Al-Ca (r = 0.98...

The following elite sets (i.e. most cited papers within the total) were obtained: π-set (where the number of papers is equal to √P, and P is the number of total papers), h-set (in which the number of papers equals to the Hirsch index), 2π-set, 2h-set, and the set of papers (ECP) which are cited more frequently than the average. The percentage share of papers and citations was found to increase in the mentioned rank of the elite sets, except ECP-set. The number of publications and citations in the elite sets was calculated also by different part-impact methods for sharing credit among the coauthors. The applied methods take into account the number or number and rank of coauthors in the by-line of the papers. It was demostrated that any of the methods changes both π and h-index significantly related to the value calculated by attribut...

Kinetics of catalyzed acyl group exchange between acetic-1-14C anhydride and alkyl thiolacetates ... more Kinetics of catalyzed acyl group exchange between acetic-1-14C anhydride and alkyl thiolacetates was investigated. The exchange is not accompanied by chemical reaction and demonstrates the full equivalency of anhydride acyl groups in the process. The rate of exchange is lowered by increasing branching rather than lengthening in S-alkyl substituents. The role of catalyst and structures of possible intermediates are interpreted. Upon existing linear structure-reactivity relationship a common mechanism involving sulfur atom as the reaction site seems to be operative.
