It analyses the way in which traditional schemas and historical patterns are integrated in the Document. As history reflects the ideology of its narrator, these historical reviews are investigated with regard to the ideology of the Damascus movement indicated in them. The ideology is described in terms of the self reflection of the group, its idea of a chosen remnant and the role of obedience to the laws of God in their life.

The author deals in a reader friendly way with what is called in the foreword "an astonishing supermarket choice of Bible translations and paraphrases." Dewey grapples with the problem of the availability of a nearly excessive range of English translations of the Bible. This book was written to guide buyers to decide which Bible to choose. The book consists of two sections. The first part deals with the principles involved in Bible translation.

In this chapter the Daniel tradents linked a traditional penitential prayer to an apocalyptic narrative. Through this combination their view that man has to wait upon God to change history, is extended into a life of sanctification, teaching, fasting and the offering of penitence. As these tradents were estranged from the temple, they had to find somewhere else to conduct their liturgical services. Their apocalyptic mythological view of the temple enabled them to constitualise holy space away from the material temple. In this way they paved the way for the synagogue as house of prayer in later times.

This can be seen in the versions as well as editions of the Hebrew and Greek Bibles. History and circumstances played a central role in the gradual growth of eventually different forms of the biblical canon. This process can be studied using the discipline of intertextuality. There always was a movement from traditum to traditio in the growth of these variant forms of biblical canon. This can be seen in an analysis of the intertextuality in Jubilees 23:8-32. The available canon of the day was interpreted there, not according to a specific demarcated volume of canonical scriptures, but in line with the theology presented in those materials, especially that of Psalm 90. 1.Form refers to 'the official corpus of books accepted as scripture' (Ulrich 2002:29). Status refers to a rule of faith. 2.Ulrich (2002:21) ascribed the present interest in the canon largely to the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

The Compendia comprise two sections. The two volumes belonging to Section One, published in 1974 and 1976 respectively, explore the history and social culture of Judaism in the period of the formation of the New Testament. Section Two is titled, The Literature of the Jewish People in the Period of the Second Temple and the Talmud. This section consists of four volumes.

Van Ruler's theocratic theology views the church as being an inclusive community in service of God's kingdom. It is the vehicle God uses to introduce his kingdom into the world. According to Van Ruler, however, the church also shows a unique character based on its relationship with Jesus Christ. Although the church can take many forms, Van Ruler's opinion is that the Christian Church could be advised by Old Testament Israel in this regard. This study shows that both inclusivist and exclusivist trends are present in the Old as well as the New Testament. The New Testament inherited the debate between these two opposing stances from the time of the Second Temple. Returning from exile, Sadocitic priests propagated an exclusivist identity for the Judaeans. Their viewpoint was based on the programme of Ezekiel 40-48, as is illustrated in the literature of Ezra-Nehemiah, the Priestly Writing, Chronicles and Jubilees. On the other hand, indeed there was an inclusivist approach as well, as is depicted in the books of Jonah, Ruth, Trito-Isaiah and even Numbers and Joshua. The conclusion drawn from the study is that both exclusivist and inclusivist trends are present in the Bible. Although the church does not have any other option in the present postmodern world but to be primarily an inclusive community, it should also show some form of exclusivism.

Sacrifice and blood are the main means in the cult for reconciling man with God. This study investigates reconciliation in Leviticus in terms of concepts like sacrifice, purity, atonement, apropiation, expiation and substitution. This is done against the background of the book's contents, the ideas of its probable priestly authors and the ideology in these circles of the cult in Israel.

Not only dispensational schemes since the Christian era, but especially contemporary mass suicides arising from activist millennialism, points to the role of the conceptualization of time in eschatology. Mbiti's African concept of time as well as Malina's description of Mediterranean time indicate an alternative matrix for understanding time in the book of Daniel. An investigation into commentaries on Daniel shows that commentators are rather using a Western concept of time than an ancient Near Eastern concept. The need for reorientation in the time concept for studying the apocalyptic materials of Daniel is indicated

They did not end up in the same canonical collections. This observation leads to a revised view of canonicity. The process of canonisation is proposed to be working on three different levels, characterised by dialogue. As final collection of books, showing literary layers, created by different movements in Judaism, canons are formed in a process of dialogue. Ben Sira, Daniel 1-7 and 1 Enoch 72-78 are depicted as literature which displays this inherent dialogical character of canonisation

Both the heavenly journey (1 En. 12-16) and the two earthly journeys to the ends of the earth (1 En. 17-36) implicate space. An actantial model as well as critical spatiality is used to analyze these stories. Allocated place and cursed space influenced by mantic wisdom using cosmological schemes are used here to depict the exclusive ideas of the author(s).
