An emphasis on the achievements of Guruchand Thakur and his Matua 1 community departs from the st... more An emphasis on the achievements of Guruchand Thakur and his Matua 1 community departs from the standard view of Bengal Renaissance in significant ways. It simply challenges the familiar contours of the history of the age. Within general history of the late nineteenth century Bengal one can rarely find a narrative concerning the achievements of the Bengali Dalits. Instead what we get is a repetition of the main storyline with remarkable consistency. The class bias of this storyline is quite evident. While celebrating the success of Bengal Renaissance, the cultural critics have often disregarded its failures.
