Being a part of the historical process, the social order is not static but in a perpetual state of flux as a result of the conflict between competing social classes, changing gender relations, and ethnic and religious groups whose concerns become articulated as movements. Movements, therefore, are also not frozen in time but change as objective realities are transformed and demand new responses. In a dialectical relationship, the social order transforms movements, and movements in turn reconfigure the social order.

Everything that is happening to the world today began when those planes crashed dramatically into the symbols of global capitalism and military might. The tendency to view September 11 as a major discontinuity in world affairs, obscures the fact that September 11 and the events that followed, in fact represent a continuity and, perhaps, even an intensification of global agendas that preceded September 11, 2001 by decades and even centuries. Colonialism, imperialism, globalization and militarization were not invented post September 11. September 11 became a catalyst for global agendas that were festering long before that date. It brought out into the open and laid bare the fangs of military might, state terror and economic domination that are implied in producing the events of September 11, 2001. I would go so far as to argue that in fact nothing has changed, at least not in any substantial way, and that what happened on September 11 and after, only accelerated the pace of what was already under way prior to that fateful date.

Women may go through all of these processes or a few of them, depending on a number of factors. They may identify with a particular identity formation, or contest and reject it, as the identity being formed goes through various stages of articulation and elaboration. The specific construct to be discussed here is Mohajir identity and sense of nationhood in Karachi, Pakistan. The purpose is to try to understand some of the ways in which ethnic and ethno-national identities come to be created, and the contradictions that may arise from other belongings, primarily those of class, religion and gender.

In the past, the study of external and internal conflict was dominated purely by analyses focused on military strategy, the politics and economics of war, as well as struggles within the borders of a state. Such geo-strategic and geo-political studies tended to center on territory acquisition, war, political personalities, power struggles between different rulers, and the causes and consequences of international or intra-national conflict. Traditional scholarship on political, economic and social conflict typically tended to ignore the role of, as well as the impact upon, ordinary people and civilian populations.

These insights are by no means immutable truths; rather they are my perceptions and understandings of the movement and are meant to raise certain issues for debate. This narrative is divided into two parts: the first part is an account of the events from the suspension of the Chief Justice on March 9, 2007 up to the present time (November 2008); the second part tries to explore the issues and offer some insights into why all this happened.

Please check back later for the full article. For decades now, the discourse on women and education by states, governments, non-governmental organizations, and global development agencies has focused overwhelmingly on access. The excessive preoccupation with enrollment rates, dropout rates, and impediments and constraints on women’s access to education has led to a relative neglect of what access is and what kind of access is being provided. Is it benign, empowering, liberating, and emancipating? Or is it rather that the messages transmitted through schooling tend to serve ends other than women’s own agency and empowerment? The case for educating girls and women is often couched in an instrumental vocabulary centered on the idea that it is good for the state, nation, country, motherhood, family, community, economic growth, and development. Such utilitarian arguments overlook the idea...

In the process of state formation and nation building, states organize the production, organizati... more In the process of state formation and nation building, states organize the production, organization and distribution of social knowledge to construct national collective memory. The tendency is even more pronounced in newly independent states that struggle to build new identities by discarding earlier belongings. When new states are formed by amalgamating diverse regional entities into a single and centralized one, the earlier, older and differentiated identities are expected to be discarded in favour of the new homogenized one. In cases where the new state is carved out of an existing one, the national remembering on each side is divergent-the Parent state mourns the loss and remembers the event as wound in the body politic, and the emerging state celebrates its creation with a sense of pride and triumph achieved through suffering and pain. Competing and rival tales of the partition are then woven in the creation of national memory. This is done by relying heavily on the identity forming subjects such as history (sense of time), civics (a sense of power), and geography (a sense of space), together known as social studies. An important requirement of all states, but particularly new ones, is the construction, elaboration and frequent invocation of 'enemies' across and within national borders. Without enemies lurking everywhere, and as the moral opposites of the self, the Self is hard to define and consolidate. The sense of threat and fear that enemies help evoke, enables the fractured and differentiated self to merge and solidify into a defensive oneness. The state of Pakistan, in this context, is an interesting, but hardly an exceptional case. Designing education for a post-national world becomes a critical task. q

The concept of peace remains elusive, occasionally complex and often contested. Militarily imposed peace by a state can be viewed by a sub- national group as repression, as a silencing of dissent. Often, peace by one party becomes the basis of conflict for another when the terms are perceived as unjust. This is the reason that peace treaties so often become the stimulus for the next war, as for example, the Treaty of Versailles, imposed by the victors of the First World War became one of the reasons for the Second World War.

Insiders usually have full citizenship with all the attendant rights that belong to citizens, while outsiders tend to become systematically excluded from various rights on the basis of some characteristic that differentiates between them and the insiders. This characteristic may be religious belief, gender, ethnic difference or some other marker of identity that is perceived as alien or Other of the nation/state.
