Among stone cists of the Earlier Bronze Age in NW Iberia several examples are known of carvings on the slabs. The motifs (dots, grids, triangles) have counterparts in the decoration of orthostats belonging to earlier megalithic tombs, but some are present in the open-air rock carvings too. We suggest that the decoration of cist slabs while related to contemporary open-air petroglyphs shows less iconographic variety due to the specialized nature of the former. At the same time, a possible pehomenon of bricolage might be postulated, by which a motif (ie sets of triangles) of Neolithic ancestry is reused in the Early Bronze Age, conferring it a new meaning, related to the definition of social elites and individual status at that time
