A bioeconomic model for corn is developed considering CRW and ECB. Economic thresholds are estimated for each pest, and the sensitivity of the estimated thresholds to relative corn and pesticide price changes is analyzed. The value of pest information to individual farmers and the economic justification of scouting data collection methods are also examined. A bioeconomic simulation model is used to generate net revenue distributions under different management strategies and economic conditions. To incorporate stochastic behavior into the model, the performance of each strategy is simulated under many random states of nature. By evaluating a wide range of strategies, the model is used to identify preferred pest management strategies for CRW and ECB. Changes in producer welfare associated with different pest management stra...

The country data exhibit group heteroskedasticity, and a maximum likelihood procedure that corrects for group heteroskedasticity is developed and used to estimate the model. Outliers are identified with information inaccuracy measures, and Strobel measures of goodness-of-fit are calculated. Results suggest that low-, middle-, and high-income countries have distinct income and price responses; low-income countries are more responsive to income and price changes than high-income countries. Additionally, the conditional demand for eight food subcategories is fit to the data and results are linked to the aggregate level results to calculate conditional and unconditional expenditure elasticities for these goods.

Results indicate faster import-growth trends for consumer-ready foods. While most bulk-food commodities and perishable high-value products, such as fruit and vegetables, are sourced from neighboring countries in the Western Hemisphere, processed foods, many spices, and other tropical products are sourced globally with rising import shares for many countries in Asia. A correlation is also noted between rising imports and a higher number of refusals for products and countries registering fast import growth.
