Body weight deficits were found in vagotomized male rats eating a liquid diet or a wet mash diet, but did not appear in vagotomized male rats eating pellets. Vagotomized female rats did not show body weight deficits on any of the three diets. However, vagotomized female rats did show a small body weight deficit if access to pelleted food was delayed by 24 hr after surgery. With delayed postsurgical access to food, vagotomized female rats showed no body weight deficits when compared to pair-fed controls. In no case was there a significant reduction in food intake after vagotomy, in contrast to observations made on rabbits. In tests of fluid regulation, female rats were subjected to overnight food deprivation, hypertonic saline injections, or polyethylene glycol injections. Vagotomized female rats consumed less water over a 2-hr period after saline injections, but they failed to show deficits in a 30-min period after saline injections. Further, they showed no deficit on the other two tests. Deficits in body weight and fluid intake regulation reported after vagotomy in rats may be explained most parsimoniously as consequences of gastrointestinal malaise rather than as consequences of metabolic, hormonal, or central neurologic changes.

In the first experiment, previously vagotomized male rats were given bilateral VMH lesions after testing for completeness of vagotomy. In a second experiment on male rats, vagotomy preceded or followed VMH lesions, and testing for completeness of vagotomy was not carded out until the end of the experiment. In a third experiment obese VMH female rats were vagotomized before or after VMH lesions, and completeness of vagotomy was assessed histologically. In each experiment, vagotomized VMH rats displayed hyperlahagia and became obese. Discrepancies between these results and those reported by others are discussed in terms of diet offered, surgical procedures, and the possibility of continuing malaise after vagotomy.

The Boulder scientist-practitioner model is useful in conceptualizing MFT training, but it is not the perfect solution. Four MFT programs (two master's and two doctoral) are featured in this article for their work in integrating research and practice. Helpful strategies presented include: Encouraging students to question the therapy process; integrating research in the curriculum and supervision; discussing the positives and negatives of empirically supported treatments; focusing on change; and developing creative classroom experiences to use within the scientist-practitioner model.

Although all three measures were significant predictors of perceived quality of recovery and the total number of 12 Steps completed, surrender, optimism, and internal spiritual well being (not external spiritual well being) differed significantly by (1) length of recovery (< 1 year vs. 1 year or more), (2) level of recovery behaviors (high vs. low), and (3) whether Steps 1-3 had been completed. The results indicate that spirituality is an important element in recovery and support the concept of including the practice of spirituality as part of recovery programs.

Their scores differed significantly from normative data on several subscales of the personality inventories. As a group, these extremely obese women scored low on the Tennessee self-concept scales, particularly on the physical self-concept scale. On the Edwards personal preference schedule, they scored low on the deference, order, affiliation, nurturance, and endurance scales, and high on the dominance and heterosexuality scales. On the Minnesota multiphasic personality inventory, they scored high on the depression, hysteria, psychopathic deviate, and paranoia scales, and they scored low on the masculinity-feminity scale. The most striking finding was that these extremely obese women, who were not alcoholics, showed scores on alcoholism scales which are typical of an alcoholic population.

Increased partner involvement in the therapeutic process was perceived as an essential component of recovery. Ss strongly endorsed greater partner involvement in the recovery process through couple therapy to deal with related marital issues, to maintain partner support for therapy, and to educate the partner about childhood sexual abuse. Results show that VMH- and sham-lesioned males had normal testes. Sham-lesioned females had small ovaries and no corpora lutea (CL). 7 VMH females had larger ovaries with CL and numerous follicles, 4 had larger ovaries with no CL but numerous follicles, and 4 had ovaries resembling those of sham-lesioned females. Damage was confined to the VMH in females with CL, but it included less or more of the anterior hypothalamus in females lacking CL. Results suggest that since VMH damage permits estrous cycling to continue, the intact VMH acts to inhibit cycling in constant light. (30 ref)

Pairs consisting of a word and a number as well as pairs consisting of 2 words showed a superiority at 8 sec. and longer retention intervals when presentations were spaced. Increasing the spacing interval beyond 8 sec. did not increase recall, when a 2-sec. rate of presentation was used. A 2-factor explanation of the findings was suggested, in which cue learning was the major factor influencing recall at longer retention intervals, while a 2nd factor was confounded with cue learning at short retention intervals.

Risk was defined as the sum of the following static variables based on interviews with juveniles and others and from written records: type of offense (violent or predatory = 1, not = 0), prior sex offense (any = 1, none = 0), history of sexual abuse (self or family = 1, none = 0), history of substance abuse (self or family = 1, none = 0), history of behavior problems (yes = 1, no = 0), and unstable home life (yes = 1, stable = 0). Low-risk (0 to 2 risk factors), medium-risk (3 factors), and high-risk (4 to 6 factors) groups of offenders were formed. Univariate ANCOVAs indicated that the high-risk group reported less family cohesion, more aggression, lower self-esteem, more social discomfort, and more frequent and extreme sexual fantasies. The implications of these findings for differential identification of and interventions with adolescent sex offenders are discussed.

EAP clients (N = 800, 97% self-referred) indicated how much family, psychological/emotional, drug, alcohol, employment-related, legal, and medical problems troubled them and the need for services in each area. Psychological/emotional (66%) and family (65%) problem areas frequently were rated "considerable" or "extreme. " Both areas were rated as "considerable" or "extreme" by 48.6% of participants. In view of the evidence that marriage and family services can be effective with both family and psychological/emotional problems, professionals who are competent to provide such services have much to offer EAP programs.

Postoperative Ss showed a significant increase in physical self-concept though it was significantly below normative values. There was a general elevation of scores of MMPI scales before surgery. Scores on the Depression and Hysteria scales decreased significantly, and scores on most other MMPI scales declined toward normative values after surgery. Before and after surgery, Ss did not differ from normative groups in degree of externality or in their willingness to make socially desirable responses. The MMPI-168 was extracted from the standard form, and appropriate comparisons indicated high correspondence at the group level; however, considerable differences between the two forms emerged in analyses of individual profile pairs. Although evidence for its use as a screening device to identify those individuals who may be experiencing significant psychological problems is offered, the analyses indicated that the two forms should not be considered equivalent in this setting.
