This study aims to examine the effect of heartwood proportion on wood properties for construction... more This study aims to examine the effect of heartwood proportion on wood properties for construction materials by reviewing 98 journal articles and non-articles. The data were collected through an online search using seven keywords: heartwood proportion, heartwood effect, physical properties, mechanical properties, wood dimensional stability, wood gluing, and wood preservation. By eliminating the irrelevant papers, 45 journal articles and non-articles were selected. The review shows that the proportion of heartwood has a positive correlation with wood density and dimensional stability. High wood density will have a positive correlation with the mechanical properties of wood. However, the dimensional stability is not only affected by the proportion of the heartwood but also the microfibril angle and the arrangement of the wood cells. The presence of heartwood is one of the most important parameters in economic value that can affe... more The presence of heartwood is one of the most important parameters in economic value that can affect the final use of wood. For construction materials, the presence of a large heartwood is very necessary, considering this will have a positive effect on the basic properties of the wood. Meanwhile, its heartwood proportion has a negative impact on the quality of pulp and paper. Therefore, this study aims to review the methods of calculating the area of the heartwood by using suitable heartwood measurement methods for better stand management and selection of raw materials in the industry. The results of the review showed that non-destructive methods were developed to measure the area of heartwood-sapwood such as computer tomography (CT-image), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), x-ray densitometry, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), so far. This is different from the destructive methods that are commonly used for visual inspection of wood color and anatomical features. During the selection of methods, the factors to be considered include cost, time, tree damage, number of samples, and efficiency in applying the methods. The visual inspection is the best option for determining the area of heartwood and sapwood. But, when the heartwood and sapwood boundaries color is unclear, chemical indicators can be performed. In addition, the ERT method can be the second alternative for tropics species. Furthermore, the method used in a study of the presence of heartwood depends on the five limiting factors mentioned previously.

The wood powder materials in two vertical positions (bottom and top) were successively extracted using n-hexane, methanol, and hot water solutions. The results showed that there was a significant interaction between the tree age and axial position in all parameters. The methanol and total extractive content decreased significantly from 1 to 3-year-old at the top part. In contrast, the amount of hot water and total extractive increased significantly from 3 to 4-year-old trees at the bottom part. Furthermore, a significant increase was also found at the bottom heartwood for hexane, methanol, and the total extractive from 4 to 5-year-old trees. Muell stemwood. Wood powder from the middle part of two trees was successively extracted by dichloromethane, ethanol, and hot water. The content of dichloromethane, ethanol, and hot water extracts were 0.17 to 0.47 %, 2.56 to 3.16 %, and 0.68 to 1.20 %, respectively. Total phenolics content (TPC) were from 549.05±25.75 to 570.35±137.05 mg GAE/ g dried extract (ethanol extract) and 175.9±50.4 to 465.2±16.0 mg GAE/ g dried extract (hot water extract). The aim of this study was to investigate the lipophilic extractives in the bark of mahogany (Swie... more The aim of this study was to investigate the lipophilic extractives in the bark of mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla). The bark was separated into inner and outer bark region. The bark was ground to form powder and then was extracted by n-hexane at 90 oC for 6 hours. Further, n-hexane soluble extract was fractionated to obtain neutral-acidic fraction. The amounts of n-hexane extract of inner and outer bark were 0.63 and 0.54 % , respectively (based on oven dried wood). The extracts of n-hexane extract, neutral, and acidic fractions were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to investigate the lipophilic constituents. The lipophilic constituents composed of hydrocarbons, aliphatic alcohols, fatty acids, terpenoids and sterols. Eucalyptus pellita is the fast-growing species which is being developed for a raw material of pul... more Eucalyptus pellita is the fast-growing species which is being developed for a raw material of pulp and paper in Indonesia. The aim of this research was to evaluate the total phenolics (TPC) and flavanols contents (TFC) in the stemwood and bark parts from four individual trees. Another purpose was to determine its cell wall contents. Wood and bark materials in two vertical positions (bottom and top) were successively extracted using dichloromethane, ethanol and hot water as the solvents. Axial factor affected significantly in the values of hot water extract, TPC, and TFC but no significantly affected the cell wall component contents. The ethanol extract levels in the heartwood part was the significantly highest. It is noticed that the heartwood part had high levels of the TPC and TFC and low level in lignin content. From this experiment, the comparatively high levels of TPC and TFC in the heartwood indicate the potential antioxidative properties that should be explored in the future....

The chemical composition of the lipophilic extractive in toluene extracts from Pododcarpus imbric... more The chemical composition of the lipophilic extractive in toluene extracts from Pododcarpus imbricartus, Agathis loranthifolia, Aracauria cunninghamii, and Aracauria papuana has been investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Different groups of compounds, such as fatty acids, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and other components were identified. The contents of toluene extract were higher in outer bark than those of inner bark. In general, the major group of the lipophilic components in both the inner and outer bark was found to be varied and dependent on species and radial position. Various fatty acids and aliphatics hydrocarbons were characterized. The predominating lipophilic compounds identified in inner and outer bark were hexadicanoic acid, tetradecanoic acid, and octadecenoic acid, 1,2 benzene dicarboxyclic, and n-undecane.

The investigation on the n-hexane lipophilic extractives of Swietenia mahagoni, alongside the ant... more The investigation on the n-hexane lipophilic extractives of Swietenia mahagoni, alongside the antifungal and antioxidant properties was conducted. The leaf sample was collected from 2- and 3-years-old trees in Perhutani enterprise of Temanggung, Central Java, Indonesia. In addition, the antifungal activity was tested using the white-rot of Phanerochaete chrysosporium, while the antioxidant property involved the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) method. The results show antifungal of 28.6% and 37.5% growth inhibition in 2- and 3 -years-old leaf, respectively, while 21.7% and 25.4% antioxidant activity were also recorded. Furthermore, the GC-MS results showed the domination of S. mahagoni leaf by fatty acids and hydo-carbons, while the terpenoids and steroids were in minor quantities. These components possibly exhibit growth inhibitory and antioxidant effects against P. chrysosporium and DPPH radicals, respectively.

The bark of Swietenia machrophylla is colored dark red, and it is correlated with the extractives... more The bark of Swietenia machrophylla is colored dark red, and it is correlated with the extractives constituents such as phenolic compounds. This study, therefore, aims to investigate extractives from the inner and outer bark of S. machrophylla and their effects to color properties. The results showed that the extractive content in the inner bark was higher than the outer except for hot water solubles. In addition, the polyphenols and sugar levels from inner to outer bark were increased, except in the soluble-sugar of hot water extractive. The highest correlation between the absorbance of methanol, hot water-soluble extracts, and total polyphenols were observed using the visual spectrophotometer. The extractives that contributed to the bark's color were indicated from flavonoids with a precursor such as monophenol of catechol and resorcinol.

Hipertensi resisten adalah tekanan darah yang tetap di atas target walaupun sudah menggunakan min... more Hipertensi resisten adalah tekanan darah yang tetap di atas target walaupun sudah menggunakan minimal tiga obat antihipertensi pada dosis maksimal yang dapat ditoleransi (salah satunya diuretik) atau tekanan darah yang membutuhkan minimal empat obat untuk mencapai target tekanan darah. Salah satu pendekatan tatalaksana hipertensi resisten adalah dengan menggunakan renal denervation. Berbagai metode renal denervation berkembang, mulai dari reseksi, kateter Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), hingga High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU). HIFU merupakan merupakan metode terbaru dan memiliki efektivitas yang cukup menjanjikan. Hasil uji pada hewan coba dan uji klinik pada manusia menunjukkan hasil yang baik. Selain itu, HIFU merupakan metode non-invasif sehingga dapat meminimalisir efek samping prosedur invasif atau bedah. Satu-satunya efek samping yang dilaporkan adalah nyeri punggung namun dapat diatasi menggunakan obat penghilang nyeri.

Lipophilic extractives in the dichloromethane extract from Eucalyptus pellita wood and bark were ... more Lipophilic extractives in the dichloromethane extract from Eucalyptus pellita wood and bark were identified by GC-MS. Of the various morphological parts, the bark samples contain more extractives than wood samples. The largest extractive content was measured in the bark of the top part. Four groups (i.e., free fatty acids, sterols-steroids, triterpenoids, and other compounds) were detected in all parts. Palmitic, oleic, and linoleic acids as well as b-sitosterol dominated among of the lipophilic extractives. Long chain fatty acids were the major lipophilic groups in heartwood. Sterols-steroids were the major components in the bottom and top part of the bark. Conversely, triterpenoids and short chain-fatty acids were the minor components in bottom and top part of the bark. Very long-chain fatty acids (i.e., docosanoic, lignoceric, and hexacosanoic) were also observed. The concentration of certain lipophilic constituents, e.g., stigmast-4-en-3-one, squalene, glycerol, oleic, linoleic, hexacosanoic, and b-sitosterol, was affected by position within the tree in axial and radial directions. The higher concentration of long chain fatty acids in the heartwood as well as sterols-steroids in the bark seems to be clearly disadvantage as far as pitch formation is concerned.

The objectives of this research were to investigate the chemical composition of Eucalyptus pellit... more The objectives of this research were to investigate the chemical composition of Eucalyptus pellita F. Muell stemwood. Wood powder from the middle part of two trees was successively extracted by dichloromethane, ethanol, and hot water. The content of dichloromethane, ethanol, and hot water extracts were 0.17 to 0.47 %, 2.56 to 3.16 %, and 0.68 to 1.20 %, respectively. Total phenolics content (TPC) were from 549.05±25.75 to 570.35±137.05 mg GAE/ g dried extract (ethanol extract) and 175.9±50.4 to 465.2±16.0 mg GAE/ g dried extract (hot water extract). Further, total flavanols content (TFC) from ethanol and hot water solution varied from 257.45±24.45 to 301.25±73.25 mg CE/ g dried extract and 52.5±2.75 to 113±32.9 mg CE/ g dried extract, respectively. The aim of this study was to investigate the lipophilic extractives in the bark of mahogany (Swie... more The aim of this study was to investigate the lipophilic extractives in the bark of mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla). The bark was separated into inner and outer bark region. The bark was ground to form powder and then was extracted by n-hexane at 90 oC for 6 hours. Further, n-hexane soluble extract was fractionated to obtain neutral-acidic fraction. The amounts of n-hexane extract of inner and outer bark were 0.63 and 0.54 % , respectively (based on oven dried wood). The extracts of n-hexane extract, neutral, and acidic fractions were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to investigate the lipophilic constituents. The lipophilic constituents composed of hydrocarbons, aliphatic alcohols, fatty acids, terpenoids and sterols. Eucalyptus pellita is the fast-growing species which is being developed for a raw material of pul... more Eucalyptus pellita is the fast-growing species which is being developed for a raw material of pulp and paper in Indonesia. The aim of this research was to evaluate the total phenolics (TPC) and flavanols contents (TFC) in the stemwood and bark parts from four individual trees. Another purpose was to determine its cell wall contents. Wood and bark materials in two vertical positions (bottom and top) were successively extracted using dichloromethane, ethanol and hot water as the solvents. Axial factor affected significantly in the values of hot water extract, TPC, and TFC but no significantly affected the cell wall component contents. The ethanol extract levels in the heartwood part was the significantly highest. It is noticed that the heartwood part had high levels of the TPC and TFC and low level in lignin content. From this experiment, the comparatively high levels of TPC and TFC in the heartwood indicate the potential antioxidative properties that should be explored in the future....

The chemical composition of the lipophilic extractive in toluene extracts from Pododcarpus imbric... more The chemical composition of the lipophilic extractive in toluene extracts from Pododcarpus imbricartus, Agathis loranthifolia, Aracauria cunninghamii, and Aracauria papuana has been investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Different groups of compounds, such as fatty acids, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and other components were identified. The contents of toluene extract were higher in outer bark than those of inner bark. In general, the major group of the lipophilic components in both the inner and outer bark was found to be varied and dependent on species and radial position. Various fatty acids and aliphatics hydrocarbons were characterized. The predominating lipophilic compounds identified in inner and outer bark were hexadicanoic acid, tetradecanoic acid, and octadecenoic acid, 1,2 benzene dicarboxyclic, and n-undecane.

The investigation on the n-hexane lipophilic extractives of Swietenia mahagoni, alongside the ant... more The investigation on the n-hexane lipophilic extractives of Swietenia mahagoni, alongside the antifungal and antioxidant properties was conducted. The leaf sample was collected from 2- and 3-years-old trees in Perhutani enterprise of Temanggung, Central Java, Indonesia. In addition, the antifungal activity was tested using the white-rot of Phanerochaete chrysosporium, while the antioxidant property involved the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) method. The results show antifungal of 28.6% and 37.5% growth inhibition in 2- and 3 -years-old leaf, respectively, while 21.7% and 25.4% antioxidant activity were also recorded. Furthermore, the GC-MS results showed the domination of S. mahagoni leaf by fatty acids and hydo-carbons, while the terpenoids and steroids were in minor quantities. These components possibly exhibit growth inhibitory and antioxidant effects against P. chrysosporium and DPPH radicals, respectively.

The bark of Swietenia machrophylla is colored dark red, and it is correlated with the extractives... more The bark of Swietenia machrophylla is colored dark red, and it is correlated with the extractives constituents such as phenolic compounds. This study, therefore, aims to investigate extractives from the inner and outer bark of S. machrophylla and their effects to color properties. The results showed that the extractive content in the inner bark was higher than the outer except for hot water solubles. In addition, the polyphenols and sugar levels from inner to outer bark were increased, except in the soluble-sugar of hot water extractive. The highest correlation between the absorbance of methanol, hot water-soluble extracts, and total polyphenols were observed using the visual spectrophotometer. The extractives that contributed to the bark's color were indicated from flavonoids with a precursor such as monophenol of catechol and resorcinol.

Hipertensi resisten adalah tekanan darah yang tetap di atas target walaupun sudah menggunakan min... more Hipertensi resisten adalah tekanan darah yang tetap di atas target walaupun sudah menggunakan minimal tiga obat antihipertensi pada dosis maksimal yang dapat ditoleransi (salah satunya diuretik) atau tekanan darah yang membutuhkan minimal empat obat untuk mencapai target tekanan darah. Salah satu pendekatan tatalaksana hipertensi resisten adalah dengan menggunakan renal denervation. Berbagai metode renal denervation berkembang, mulai dari reseksi, kateter Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), hingga High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU). HIFU merupakan merupakan metode terbaru dan memiliki efektivitas yang cukup menjanjikan. Hasil uji pada hewan coba dan uji klinik pada manusia menunjukkan hasil yang baik. Selain itu, HIFU merupakan metode non-invasif sehingga dapat meminimalisir efek samping prosedur invasif atau bedah. Satu-satunya efek samping yang dilaporkan adalah nyeri punggung namun dapat diatasi menggunakan obat penghilang nyeri.

Lipophilic extractives in the dichloromethane extract from Eucalyptus pellita wood and bark were ... more Lipophilic extractives in the dichloromethane extract from Eucalyptus pellita wood and bark were identified by GC-MS. Of the various morphological parts, the bark samples contain more extractives than wood samples. The largest extractive content was measured in the bark of the top part. Four groups (i.e., free fatty acids, sterols-steroids, triterpenoids, and other compounds) were detected in all parts. Palmitic, oleic, and linoleic acids as well as b-sitosterol dominated among of the lipophilic extractives. Long chain fatty acids were the major lipophilic groups in heartwood. Sterols-steroids were the major components in the bottom and top part of the bark. Conversely, triterpenoids and short chain-fatty acids were the minor components in bottom and top part of the bark. Very long-chain fatty acids (i.e., docosanoic, lignoceric, and hexacosanoic) were also observed. The concentration of certain lipophilic constituents, e.g., stigmast-4-en-3-one, squalene, glycerol, oleic, linoleic, hexacosanoic, and b-sitosterol, was affected by position within the tree in axial and radial directions. The higher concentration of long chain fatty acids in the heartwood as well as sterols-steroids in the bark seems to be clearly disadvantage as far as pitch formation is concerned.
