The administration of anesthetics during a surgical procedure has been done historically in a man... more The administration of anesthetics during a surgical procedure has been done historically in a manual way with the anesthesiologist deciding what amounts and at what rates to use. Over the last few decades there has been a rapid increase in the automation of many medical areas including anesthesiology, with that increased level of automation have also appeared new ways to measure the level of sedation in patients. Historically, one of the most frequently index used has been the BIS, which has proven rather reliable as an indicator. More recently, another index called PSI has attracted interest of practitioners. In this article a comparison of these two indexes was performed. Data recording BIS and PSI values from surgical operations for several patients were collected and analyzed. The results seem to indicate that it is to be expected that in 95% of the cases the correlation between the BIS and PSI index will be at least 0.6866.

Este artículo describe un algoritmo simple y robusto para la simulación de señales biomedica usan... more Este artículo describe un algoritmo simple y robusto para la simulación de señales biomedica usando una Red Neuronal Autorregresiva No Lineal con Entradas Exógenas (NARX-Nonlinear Autorregresive Network with Exogenous inputs). La NARX puede ajustarse para sistemas dinámicos cuya salida depende tanto de la entrada recibida como del estado en que se encuentre el sistema. Por lo que es especialmente adecuada para la estimación de los componentes cuasi-periódico de las señales fisiológicas, tales como el ElectroEncefalograma (ECG). La validez y rendimiento del método descrito se confirman a través de experimentos sobre datos reales obtenidos de la base de datos de acceso público PhysioNet.
Simulation nowadays plays an increasing role in the assessment of possible solutions and situatio... more Simulation nowadays plays an increasing role in the assessment of possible solutions and situation analysis. However, the tools used and previously created models are often incompatible and territorially distributed. Domain specialists lack the expertise and specific programming skills to use them effectively. The development of the Future Internet creates new challenges for simulation engineering by offering extended access. However, primarily a conception is needed, which would create unified access to the simulation architecture on the Future Internet. The paper discusses development of a new conceptual approach to simulation engineering, aiming to support domain experts in performing simulation of complicated socio-technical systems on the Cloud.

Purpose This paper aims to study the results of the public aid programmes, through supply-side su... more Purpose This paper aims to study the results of the public aid programmes, through supply-side subsidies, for ultra-fast next generation access (NGA) broadband deployment that have been developed in The Canary Islands since 2013. These findings will, in turn, hopefully help the policymakers of archipelagos define their own ultra-fast broadband development plans. Design/methodology/approach An empirical approach has been used, based on the observation of the historical results obtained in the archipelago and the way broadband was diffused throughout the territory. Findings Results show that the broadband has developed asymmetrically in the archipelago, which, in turn, has caused the onset of a triple spatial digital divide. It was also observed that some aspects of the current way that such programmes are created and, consequently, the way that public funds are allocated, that could be improved and might help prevent geographical discrimination. Se analiza cómo la evolución tecnológica, el papel jugado por el regulador y los operadores, y la posición geoestratégica de Canarias en el Atlántico, han configurado la actual estructura de cables submarinos tendidos en sus aguas.

El objetivo fundamental es el desarrollo de un sistema automatico de ayuda al diagnostico de sena... more El objetivo fundamental es el desarrollo de un sistema automatico de ayuda al diagnostico de senales cerebrales. Se pretende aislar al usuario final del sistema de los conocimientos multidisciplinarios integrados en el mismo. Para ello ha sido disenado en diferentes capas o niveles de abstraccion. Las capas inferiores estaran formadas fundamentalmente por conocimiento de tipo procedural, y subiendo en los niveles encontraremos conocimiento mas simbolico y cercano al lenguaje del especialista neurofisiologo. Se permiten dos ejemplos que permiten mostrar la diferente naturaleza de los distintos tipos de problemas en ese campo, asi como las metodologias usadas en su resolucion.Para la caracterizacion de las senales,se utilizan tecnicas tanto heuristicas como analiticas basadas en representaciones tiempo-frecuencia. Se finaliza con las lineas generales del diseno y la implementacion del sistema integrado.

En este articulo se presentan los resultados de un estudio de caso sobre la construccion de conceptos logico-matematicos en cursos iniciales de Ensenanza Primaria en un nino con Espina Bifida y Sindrome de Arnold Chiari. Se desarrollaron sesiones de estudio con un Sistema Tutorial Inteligente (ITS) basado en metodologias borrosa y multiagente, a traves de conceptos de cuantificacion, clasificacion, seriacion y correspondencia termino a termino. Purpose This paper aims to study the competition problems and market failures in the Canary Islan... more Purpose This paper aims to study the competition problems and market failures in the Canary Islands and propose an alternative management model for the telecommunication transmission network. This model is based on a wholesale-only open-access transmission network, available to all the retail service providers of this region, and managed by a unique entity subject to regulation with cost-based prices. The proposal hopefully will help to debate about the implementation of certain regulatory models in the network industries, concerning telecommunication submarine cables connecting archipelagos. Design/methodology/approach An empirical approach has been used, based on the observation and analysis of the regulatory policies applied to the wholesale transmission networks in the Canary Islands, Azores and Madeira archipelagos. Abstract Maritime ports are complex systems where any decision may affect the interests of many d... more Abstract Maritime ports are complex systems where any decision may affect the interests of many different stakeholders. New technologies are transforming the maritime transport sector, improving economic efficiency, optimizing the systems and operations of logistics management and enhancing connectivity. One of the problems that can benefit from the use of new technologies is finding the best transshipment schedule for incoming vessels. In this paper, we propose using automatic learning techniques to obtain a predictor of the robustness of transshipment schedules proposed by a scheduler. This measure of the goodness of the loading/unloading plan will consider the uncertainty to which processes in ports are subject, due to the weather, personnel skills, and the number of resources available, among other factors. Specifically, in this paper we propose using the so-called ‘decision tree’ algorithm to create a model for predicting the goodness of the proposed transshipment schedule. To obtain the historical data needed to train the machine-learning algorithm, we resorted to discrete event systems simulation, which can be used to test, for the same schedule, various scenarios with different disturbances. This yielded a model that predicts the behavior of the transshipment schedule based on the actual situation at the port.
