Among key activities under IPEC there is an advancement of regional economic connectivity to reach four objectives: to foster economic growth and regional trade in South Asia; to increase private sector competitiveness in the region by enhancing the business environment; to engage the private sector on economic issues, particularly regional trade in South Asia and trade between South and Southeast Asia; to encourage stronger economic integration between South and Southeast Asia, engaging with regional institutions and international financial institutions. The IPEC’s vision addresses physical infrastructure, trade integration, energy markets, as well as people-to-people relations. IPEC may be considered through the prism of hegemonic rivalry with China’s Belt and Road Initiative over the influences in...

Research paper thumbnail of An insight into trade patterns in HDD industry between CPTPP countries

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), also termed as... more The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), also termed as TPP-11, is a mega-regional trade agreement signed by Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam on 8 March 2018 and effective since the 30 December 2018. The CPTPP is an advanced, intrusive deal covering issues as trade in goods and services, customs administration, trade facilitation, investment, telecommunications, government procurement, intellectual property, environment, transparency and anti-corruption measures. According to Baldwin (2014), trade regionalism of the 21 century is aimed at enhancing the expansion of the global value chains (GVCs), therefore, hard disk drive (HDD) industry is selected due to its network orientation. Participation in quick, high frequency GVCs in ICT-related machinery industries impacts trade patterns of countries and regions, starting with the largest CPTPP economy in nominal terms ...

Research paper thumbnail of Intra-industry trade and implications of the European Union-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement from the perspective of the automotive industry

Research Design & Methods: We conducted an analysis of intra-industry trade disaggregated into 65 six-digit HS tariff codes using the UN Comtrade database. Findings: Our results confirm the potential of intra-industry trade in the automotive industry, reflected by its increasing volume, as well as the role of high-quality vertical intra-industry trade (VIIT). From the perspective of the EU, it is important to stress the improvement of the trade balance with Japan in the automotive industry and the rising position of Japan as an EU trade partner. Trade liberalisation under the EU-Japan EPA, including both tariff and non-tariff measures, may contribute to the further expansion of the EU-Japan bilateral trade in the automotive industry. However, mid-and long-term trends in intra-industry flows, including their horizontal and vertical patterns, depend on the industry's competitiveness and corresponding quality and cost differences. Implications & Recommendations: The authors studied regulatory implications of the EU-Japan EPA for the automotive industry, including sectoral Annexes and Appendix of the EPA. The authors pointed to theoretical and empirical objections in the research process, related mostly to the degree of the disaggregation of statistics and the choice of trade nomenclature. The necessity of further research was stressed at the disaggregated country-country level to eliminate distortions of data on the IIT patterns and verify the relevance of countryand industry-specific determinants of trade, including FDI. Detailed studies of implications of the EU-Japan EPA should be undertaken in one year, when regulatory frameworks of the EU-UK and UK-Japan trade relations will be finally agreed upon and formalised. Contribution & Value Added: The automotive industry is an important contributor to employment, GDP and R&D expenditures for both the EU and Japan. Therefore, trends in intra-industry trade and the EPA's implications in this sector deserve attention and in-depth analysis. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no such industry-level analysis of the EU-Japan EPA so far. The authors considered consequences of Brexit for the automotive industry, including various scenarios of the future EU-UK and Japan-UK trade relations. Article type: research article

Fifteen countries in the 2000-2016 period have been examined. Measuring the efficiency of research and development spending was performed using the non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methodology, which allows for the assessment of input–output efficiency. The research includes the following input and output variables: annual public and private spending on innovation, high-technology exports as a percentage of manufactured exports, patent applications to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) by priority year for million inhabitants, trademark applications (TA) for million inhabitants and information and communications technology (ICT) exports as a percentage of manufactured exports. Hong Kong and the Philippines are perhaps the most efficient with respect to research and development (R&D) when...

These challenges put aid workers in a range of risks and under the pressure. However, human resources are crucial for success of humanitarian operations in general. At the same time, each humanitarian operation is reliant on logistics and logistics activities are always connected with logistic staff. Understanding what motivates logisticians to join the humanitarian sector is essential information for humanitarian organizations and for recruiters within. Also, knowing which factors influence motivation and job satisfaction of humanitarian logisticians could help the organizations to struggle with the extremely turnover they have to face. Up to this moment, needed skills and the performance of humanitarian logisticians were examined. Also, the motivators of humanitarian workers are covered in previous research. Therefore, the additional aim of this research is to extend the knowledge about the human resources in humanitarian sector as well.
