In this paper we document this evolution outlining the stereo requirements of the 3D wireframe model matcher in TINA and explaining why PMF was de- signed as a solution. We describe how the algorithmic constraints within PMF (a classical feature-based solution to the stereo correspondence problem) were then re-formulated as the Stretch Correlator (SC), a feature driven, area-based solution. We explain how the computational benefits of the SC implemen- tation were exploited in the development of the Video Convolution Processor (VCP), a prototype VLSI device designed and fabricated to accelerate the fundamental SC processes. The SC algorithm was extended to integrate data from temporal sequences of stereo images in order to improve robustness and cope with dynamic environments. Finally, we discuss how and why multi-scale techniques were incor...

Research paper thumbnail of Gluconic Acid from Biomass Fast Pyrolysis Oils: Specialty Chemicals from the Thermochemical Conversion of Biomass

Because of the complexity of the bio-oil, most upgrading strategies focus on removing oxygen from the entire mixture to produce fuels. Here we report a novel method for the production of the specialty chemical, gluconic acid, from the pyrolysis of biomass. Through a combination of sequential condensation of pyrolysis vapors and water extraction, a solution rich in levoglucosan is obtained that accounts for over 30% of the carbon in the bio-oil produced from red oak. A simple filtration step yields a stream of high-purity levoglucosan. This stream of levoglucosan is then hydrolyzed and partially oxidized to yield gluconic acid with high purity and selectivity. This combination of cost-effective pyrolysis coupled with simple separation and upgrading could enable a variety of new product markets for chemicals from biomass.

Here, we report a family of solid catalysts that can stabilize water-oil emulsions and catalyze reactions at the liquid/liquid interface. By depositing palladium onto carbon nanotube-inorganic oxide hybrid nanoparticles, we demonstrate biphasic hydrodeoxygenation and condensation catalysis in three substrate classes of interest in biomass refining. Microscopic characterization of the emulsions supports localization of the hybrid particles at the interface.
