(Asteraceae). Essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from different colored flowers of C. tchihatcheffii were separately analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS), simultaneously. The main constituent both oils was found as germacrene D (17.6% and 17.4%). The flower color difference was shown not to play a role in essential oil yield and composition.

In this study, we examined the variability in seed traits among ten populations of Helianthemum salicifolium (L.) Miller in Anatolia, Turkey. Since the Anatolian Peninsula has a geographic structure exhibiting longitudinal, elevational and climatic gradients, we hypothesized that seed dormancy, seed mass and germination show inter-population variability. We also postulated that seed traits are correlated to climatic and geographic characteristics of the populations. Since H. salicifolium is a species with a hard seed coat, we conducted germination experiments using heat shock and mechanical scarification. The germination percentage was improved significantly by mechanical scarification but remained unaltered by heat shock treatments in all sampled populations. As expected, seed traits exhibited substantial variation among the populations. We found no association between germination traits (dormancy level and germination rate in different treatments) and environmental variables. By contrast, seed mass showed an elevational/longitudinal/climatic pattern: Populations in cooler and higher-elevation areas had larger seed mass. However, when the influence of climate was controlled, the geographic location became an important factor affecting seed mass. We conclude that seed mass variation among populations of H. salicifolium in Anatolia is shaped by the climate at the regional scale, but at the same time, geographically closer populations exhibit more similarity in seed mass.

There exist 72 species, 2 subspecies and 12 varieties of the genus Dianthus L. (Caryophyllaceae) ... more There exist 72 species, 2 subspecies and 12 varieties of the genus Dianthus L. (Caryophyllaceae) in Turkey. 34 species of them (47.2%) are endemic for Turkey [1-6]. While most of these endemic species are very local, 12 of them are identified only via type locality and 5 by two collections. They are more frequent on the territory within the Toros Mountain range, particularly in grid C4 and C5 except for the few local endemic species such as D. engleri which are observed out of this range. Dianthus engleri is cushion-forming species which has spectabular flowers (Figure 1). The type locality of species is Karababa Mountain [1]. The second collection after Bornmueller’s type specimen is from Akdağ by Siehe in 1911 which is near Karababa. The description of the species was based on these two collections, therefore we thought that the description is may be inadequate. Therefore, in this study it is aimed to expand the description of the species.

(Boraginaceae) is a mesophytic genus of approximately 40 species, mostly distributed in the Euro-Siberian phytogeographical region. The monophyletic genus Symphytum, belongs to tribe Boragineae, is related to west mediterranean genus Borago [1], With 18 species, Turkey holds the largest number of Symphytum species. North-east Anatolian Symphytum species are S. asperum Lepechin, S. sylvaticum Boiss. and S. ibericum Steven. The interspecific hybridization appears to be one of the main speciation processes in the evolution of Symphytum [2]. Therefore especially in North-east Anatolia S. asperum and S. sylvaticum group has many taxonomical difficulties to solve. Since the lack of taxonomic confusion about S. ibericum, its taxonomy is not discussed here.

Scarcity of such studies restrict our understanding of the processes shaping diversity across the entire Mediterranean. To this end we used a combination of molecular markers and presence/absence data from all species of the Eastern Mediterrranean genusRicotiacollected across its full geographic range to determine historical, ecological and evolutionary factors responsible for lineage-specific diversification in this genus. Network analysis based on nuclear ribosomal and chloroplast DNA revealed high genetic structure within all lineages and phylogenetic reconstructions based on the multispecies coalescent showed that within lineage diversification corresponded to the onset of the Mediterranean climate. Reconstruction of ancestral histories indicate the genus originated within Anatolia and slowly spread across the Eastern Mediterrane...

(9 species and 30 accessions) were examined by light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate the taxonomic relevance of these traits. Four main seed surface types were detected (papillate, reticulate, reticulate-papillate and undulate) in Ricotia. In order to address the evolution of selected seed characters, ancestral character state reconstruction analysis was performed. The results indicate that the lack of wing and the reticulate surface are ancestral states for Ricotia. Finally, mapping of seed shape characters (but not the seed surface microsculpturing) among Ricotia species is concordant with current phylogenetic concepts of Ricotia.
