It’s the first time that the performance-based seismic design criteria have been adopted for the design of the Vancouver SkyTrain system. A Seismic Peer Review Panel (SPRP) was established in accordance with the Project Agreement (PA) to review and approve the seismic design methodology for all structures along the new SkyTrain alignment. The Evergreen Line runs through enormously challenging ground conditions in Port Moody and Coquitlam highly susceptible to soil liquefaction under moderate to large magnitude of earthquakes causing variable, large-scale lateral spreading. For many challenging locations, non-linear structural analyses incorporating non-linear soil-pile-structure interaction and directional ground deformations were carried out to confirm structural performance. The rates of mass transfer at a stainless steel cathode were measured for copper and lead in dilute acidified copper sulphate and lead nitrate solutions at different ultrasonic frequencies. Concentrations in bulk solution were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. By increasing frequencies from 40 to 100 kHz, a high value for the mass transfer coefficient and an effective thinning of the diffusion layer were observed. Higher rates of mass transfer reduced energy consumption. Use of ultrasound with electrochemical processes can provide valuable contributions to remove metallic ions from industrial wastewater without using extra chemicals. The process has efficiently reduced the cost of energy consumption and deposition time.

Closed form exact general solutions of the fluid velocity are obtained by means of the Laplace transform. The solutions of ordinary viscous fluids corresponding to time-derivatives of integer order is obtained as particular cases of the present solutions. Several special cases are also discussed. Numerical computations and graphical illustrations are used in order to study the effects of the Caputo-Fabrizio time-fractional parameter α and Reynolds number on velocity field.

Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering, 2016

Performance-based design (PBD) was first introduced in Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC... more Performance-based design (PBD) was first introduced in Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC) in 2014. Performance-based design is the design that meets multiple performance criteria under different earthquake hazards. To investigate the impact of changes in CHBDC 2014, a four-span concrete highway bridge is designed and evaluated using force-based design (FBD) and PBD methods as per CHBDC 2014, and FBD method as per CHBDC 2006. By incorporating soil–structure interaction (using p–y curves) nonlinear pushover and dynamic time history analyses are conducted to assess the seismic performance of these bridges. Maximum strains of concrete and reinforcing steel are compared among the three designs to determine their performance levels. It is concluded that PBD (CHBDC 2014) is highly conservative compared to FBD (for both CHBDC 2014 and 2006). For the three-level PBD approach, the design is governed by the criterion of reinforcing steel not yielding under the design earthquake (with ...

Estimates of genetic parameters (genotypic coefficient of variation, heritability and genetic advance) for the yield and its components were higher than the control in two generations. The increased genetic variability for these traits provides great scope for further selection.

The prudence behind this research is to examine various problems in front of the small businesses and to offer vital support and cooperation to overcome those with the support of concerned institutions through consultancy and training programs. The researchers have an intention to make available the research results to the governmental agencies, concerned small business institutions and also to the educational institutions which are continually design plans, programs, policies and strategies to upgrade the managerial and technical dexterities of the small business Indian operators. After thorough revision of relevant literature on small businesses and its management, the researchers used a well structured questionnaire and in-depth personal interviews with 586 small business operators selected from manufacturing, trading (retailing and wholesaling), finance, servicing/repair businesses which are located in the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh in India. The researchers have used convenience sampling and collected data was analyzed with the support of Microsoft Excel and frequency distribution. Noticeably, majority of the small businessmen in India are facing myriad number of challenges both in management and at the time of establishment of their business operations. In particular, 72.47 percent of small businesses operators’ have substantiated their strong opinion towards the challenges they are facing particularly finance, marketing and other problems while managing their businesses. The researchers also attempted to get the opinions on problems of the various categories of small businesses while starting their operations. A staggering 68percent of respondents identified the problems related to preparation of business plan, location selection, marketing and other problems like lack of proper credit facilities, skilled manpower, and other infra related problems while setting up of their businesses. On an average, 64.62 and 63.51 percent of small businesses are facing various kinds of problems both at the time of day-to-day management as well as start-up of their businesses respectively. The present research confined with the opinions of only four categories of small business operators articularly from the manufacturing, finance, trading (retailing and wholesaling), and servicing/repair which are continuing their business operations from the nine coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh in India.

According to the recent allegation that speculators participations affect the market trends and commodity prices, it is also necessary to analyze the speculation activity impact on the volatility prediction in this study. Speculation activity which is measured by workings "T" absorbed many attentions recently. The historical value of some explanatory variables other than the historical volatilities, which is normally used in the volatility forecasting models such as GARCH models, has been used to forecast the future volatilities of crude oil. The empirical data of light sweet crude oil future prices from the NEW YORK mercantile exchange market has been used to train and test the model. The results of the Radial Basis Function Network and the Feed Forward Back Propagation Network have been compared with each other and with the results from the GARCH model as well. The findings of this part of the study show that both Radial Basis Function Network and the Feed Forward Back Propagation Network are working better than the GARCH model in forecasting the crude oil future prices return volatilities and speculation plays an important role in forecasting volatility in absence of historical volatility. But when the historical volatilities are available it is observed that they have enough information of future and the information of the speculative activity is encompassed by the historical volatilities. The explicit contribution of this part of the study is the application of two types of the Artificial Neural Networks, including Feed Forward Back Propagation Network and Radial Basis Function Network in forecasting return volatilities of crude oil future prices using some intra markets variables especially with focus on the speculation activity.

Hybrid automata models have been used in literature to represent the behavior of excitable cells,... more Hybrid automata models have been used in literature to represent the behavior of excitable cells, in particular their characteristic action potential. One of these models [14] describes the action potential of neurons, which belong to the class of excitable cells. However, this model does not take the sensitivity of a synapse to presynaptic action potentials into account, an effect also known as synaptic plasticity. Hebb's learning postulate describes the sensitivity of a synapse in firing the postsynaptic spikes. In this paper, we extend the existing neuron action potential hybrid automata model to incorporate Hebb's learning postulate. We propose a class of Parametric Linear Hybrid Automata as a suitable modeling formalism for the extended model. We analyze the model using the PHAVer model checker that support parametric analysis as well as the composition of automata.

The metric SLAM suffers from sensor inaccuracies and thus cannot be used for long-term navigation. In such case, Visual SLAM or a Hybrid SLAM based on both metric and visual approach is a good alternative. In this paper, in order to speed up a Visual SLAM, we propose a novel concept of dynamic dictionary generated on the results of triangulation done on RF, radio frequency, signals from nearest cell towers of a cellular network. This dynamic dictionary efficiently manages the scalability of a Visual SLAM and make it possible to work in a large-scale environment. A framework is proposed along with triangulation data of a city and with simulations to support the concept.

Our model allows commodity futures returns to vary with the holdings of hedgers and allows these holdings to vary with business conditions. The model also allows for time variation in expected returns with relative scarcity of the commodity. Our evidence suggests that a large portion of the predictable variation in futures returns is explainable by these asset specific factors and that movements in these factors are related to macroeconomic variables. This evidence is consistent with rational return predictability.
