It is a reasonably safe procedure that helps not only to reach the correct diagnosis based on histopathological findings but also helps in predicting the clinical course and outcome. The pattern of kidney diseases varies not only in far apart geographical regions but also in the same country. This study was done to evaluate the demographic pattern and spectrum of kidney diseases in renal biopsy-proven cases in an admitted patient of a tertiary care hospital of northern India. Results The mean age of patients was 41.3 years ± 18.39 years, and the male-to-female ratio was 1.7:1. The most common indication for biopsy in this study was nephrotic syndrome (40.5%). The primary glomerular disease was most common, accounting for 57.5% of cases. Membranous nephropathy (MN) was the most frequently observed histopathological diagnosis not only in the primary glomerular disease category (22.9%) but o...

A number of studies carried out in different parts of the world including India, have clearly shown that medical students use this technology freely and frequently. However, the situation with regard to medical teachers is not very clear as little information is available. The present study was conducted to determine the extent of the use of computers and internet by teachers in medical education. Methods: A questionnaire based study was conducted among all available teachers working at S.R.M.S. Institute of Medical Sciences, Bareilly (U.P.), India between March and June, 2012. Total of 142 medical teachers participated. Results and Conclusion: The majority (83.09%) use computers and internet for teaching. These teachers use computers for PowerPoint presentations while teaching, a vast majority of them (88.13%) use the internet to prepare their teaching materials. A significant statistical correlation was observed between computer and internet use and the younger age of teachers (p<0.001). Similarly, a significant correlation (p<0.001) was noted with the rank of teachers; non-users are predominantly professors, while users belonged to lower ranks (assistant professor or associate professor).

Moreover, there is a wide disparity in coverage, indicating the influence of various social, economic and cultural factors. Aims: The present study was conducted to know the immunization status of children, 12 e23 months of age, in the Rohilkhand region of U.P. and to assess the effects of various factors influencing it. Settings and design: The present study was carried out as a cross sectional study, between September 2012 and February 2013 at the pediatric OPD of SRMS Institute of Medical Sciences, Bareilly. Methods: The subjects of the study were OPD children. A total of 450 children, aged 12e23 months were included. Immunization status, with regard to the doses of BCG, OPV, DPT and measles vaccine given in the 1st year was assessed by interviewing parents and checking immunization cards. Information about various social factors was also taken. Percentages and Chi square test were used for analyzing data. Results: Overall, 40.66% children were found completely immunized, 45.11% were partially immunized, while 14.22% had received no immunization. The factors, which had a significant impact on immunization status were gender of the child, family's income and parental education. Birth order, religion and habitation were not found to have significant impact on the immunization status of children. Conclusions: There is need for improving economic and educational status of families for reducing the burden of vaccine preventable diseases.

Intracranial infection, without any predisposing factor like trauma or surgical intervention as a cause of pneumocephalus is relatively uncommon. While, intracranial infections by gas producing organisms as a cause of pneumocephalus are well known, a spontaneous intracranial infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus causing pneumocephalus is little known. We report here a child who developed pneumocephalus following staphylococcal lung infection with meningitis and eventually showed complete recovery. Meningitis should be considered as a possible cause of pneumocephalus in absence of trauma and surgical intervention.

This gas may arise either from a trauma, a tumor, a surgical, or a diagnostic procedure or occasionally from an infection. Pneumocephalus as a complication of bacterial meningitis, in absence of trauma or a procedure, is extremely rare, particularly in a newborn. A case of pneumocephalus occurring in a baby, suffering from neonatal meningitis, acquired probably through unsafe cutting and tying of the cord, is reported here. Cutting, tying, and care of the umbilical cord is of utmost importance to prevent neonatal infection as the same is a potential cause of serious anaerobic infections, besides tetanus.

[1... more Introduction β-thalassemia is the most common autosomal single gene disorder across the globe. [1,2] This disorder is caused by a deficient (β + thalassemia) or absent (β° thalassemia) synthesis of one or more of the globin chains. Until date, more than 380 different types of mutations causing this disease have been identified in Online Mendalian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) 2005. The endemic area of the disease is the "thalassemia belt," which includes the Mediterranean region, part of the Middle-East, the Indian subcontinent and the SouthEast Asia. [3,4] Immigration plays a major role in both the distribution and the extent of mutations across the globe. [5] There are approximately 45 million carriers with a carrier rate of approximately 1:20, of β-thalassemia in South Asian countries which include India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. [6] Treatment of individuals with β-thalassemia major, which entails regular blood transfusions and expensive iron chelation regimen, is still not satisfactory. Thus, the disease causes significant morbidity and mortality in affected individuals. [7] β-thalassemia is a major public-health problem and a burden on the society. The cost for blood
