The sources of output growth are input growth effect and total factor productivity growth (TFPG) and again TFPG is composed of adjusted scale effect (ASC), technological progress (TP) and technical efficiency change (TEC). A stochastic frontier model with a translog production function is used to estimate the growth attributes of output and productivity of the 2-digit manufacturing industries as well as total manufacturing industry in Gujarat during the entire study period (1981-82 to 201011), pre-and post-reform period (1981-82 to 1990-91 and 1991-92 to 2010-11) and also during two decades of the post-reform period (1991-92 to 2000-01 and 2001-02 to 211011). The empirical finding clears that input growth effect is the major contributor to output growth in Gujarat manufacturing and total facto...

BRICS countries account for more than 40% of the world population and 25% of world GDP in PPP terms. Besides, these countries have a key role to play in the post-crisis global economy as producer of goods and services, receivers and exporters of capital, and/or consumer market on large potential. More importantly, these ones envisage ways to promote food security and food production in Third World countries by raising agricultural productivity and output via initiatives like the creation of basic agricultural information exchange system of these countries; enhancing investments in the food supply chain; developing a social safety net through conditional income transfer programmes for the poorest of the poor. In this context the present chapter examines the status of food security of BRICS economies in the context of globalization and governance and its implications thereof.

The study is based on in-depth interviews with 150 households of Forest Protection Committees (FPC) in Paschim Medinipur district in the West Bengal state of India. Based on a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of 14 participatory indicators, it follows that “social” aspects of participation are considerably less important in West Bengal than as found elsewhere in India, while the perception of the environment (first and third factor) stand out as the most important aspects of participation in JFM, jointly explaining almost half of the variance. Regression analyses indicate that household size, the number of forest committee meetings, religion of the household, willingness to pay of the household for the forest protection and the size of land holding are important variables for explaining variation in levels of participation. Results from estimating game theoretic models on participation among villagers in JFM indicates that in two out of the four possible situations, harmonious sharing of the benefits is an (Nash) equilibrium, but not unique. In all cases, institutional checks and balances are needed to guarantee mutual participation, which is possible only by strengthening the JFM management body.

Technological progress is found to be the major driving force of TFPG and the decline in TFPG of the state’s manufacturing industries during the post-reform period is mainly accounted for by the decline in technological progress (TP) of the same during that period.

Some of the trade wars may be cited as (i) The First and Second Opium War Empire between 1839 and 1842; (ii) The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, 1930 signed by US President Herbert Hoover; (iii) Chicken wars in the early 1960s; (iv) The US–Japan automobile trade war in the 1980s; (v) 1985 Pasta War between America under the Regan Administration of United States and Europe; (vi) The Banana wars. However, trade becomes more intense in the present century with the increase of the economic trade instruments. Under the Obama Administration, currency war and tariff war both became strong between the United States and China with intense effect over the globe. After the Obama regime, came Donald John Trump with a number of controversial (aggressive) trade protectionism plans saying thereby “China’s accession to the World Trade Organization has enabled the greatest jobs theft in history” and “Trillions of our dollars and millions of our jobs flowed overseas as a result.” Even during the COVID-19 period in the 2020s, threats and counter-threats have been on the ascend. It is in this backdrop the present chapter mainly traces the history of trade wars in the twenty-first century, touching upon the nineteenth and twentieth century trade battles.

India has a huge renewable energy potential, and the availability of renewable energy sources is widely dispersed. The key objectives of the chapter are to assess the state development of renewable energy in India. It is seen that the average percentage users of solar power in India has increased from 0.27% in 2001 to 0.44% in 2011. ANOVA results indicate there is significant difference among the states of India in renewable energy development in comparison to their potential capacities, and there is enough scope for the development of renewable energy like solar energy in India.

Repeated droughts and erratic rainfall have severely affected the livelihood of rural people. The irrigation sector will also likely to be strongly affected by climate change for the predicted increased variability in precipitation (Palanisami, 2010). It is well documented in the literature that irrigation plays the vital role in improving the yield or productivity in the agricultural sector and the impact of irrigation on reducing poverty is striking (Roy, 2006; Balasubramanian and Selvaraj, 2003; Anbumozhi et al., 2007). Among the irrigation sources, tank irrigation is considered important as it can play a very critical role in the sustainable irrigation development particularly in the dry zones. Tank means a small scale surface reservoir deriving the inflows mainly from rainfall run-off. Tanks can have a wider geological distribution than ...

The system of Rice Intensification (SRI) has been proved to be successful method of rice cultivation in many areas around the globe. In this backdrop there is an urgent need to explore the possibilities of adopting new innovative production technique like SRI in the dry zones where the yield is low. Here an attempt has been made to understand the justification of the SRI cultivation in terms of productivity and profitabality in the dry zone like Nayagram block in West Bengal in India. The results suggest that in terms of both cost savings and productivity gain, SRI performs better compared to conventional methods of cultivation. The probability of adoption of SRI by farmer households increases with the adult family members, livestock, membership of farmers‟ organization and access to irrigation.

On its way forward it has faced three of the world's worst challenges from the global turmoil. Of them, the impact of first crisis on India was minimal. But the other two crises had a tremendous impact on its external sector. In effect, the current and capital account of India's BoP have undergone significant structural changes during these two and a half a decades (1990–1991 to 2014–2015). It is in this context this chapter evaluates the evolution of two and a half decades of India's BoP in the context of global changes and exchange rate fluctuations and instability.

This paper discusses the trends in public financing of secondary education in West Bengal during 1980-81 to 2008-09. During this period the growth rate of public expenditure on secondary education in West Bengal is quite low at constant prices (1993-94). Hence it can’t keep pace with the secondary (classes V-XII) enrolment growth. Moreover, this expenditure is made mainly on non-plan head. However, the relative importance of secondary education in West Bengal has increased within the education sector during 1980-81 to 2004-05.

Dutt and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. On economic development of the country, Swami Vivekananda possessed his own views on the economic issues like eradication of poverty, agricultural and industrial development, condition of the laboring people and economic system. Even after seven decades after Independence, India still remains one of the poorest nations in terms of per capita income and ranks low in Human Development Index (HDI). The article attempts to look into economic thoughts of Swami Vivekananda and their present-day relevance.
