The framework is based on the maqasid al-shariah or the higher purposes of the Islamic Divine law. Under this framework, there are five purposes of the Islamic Divine law which are protected, namely faith, life, intellect, progeny, and property. This framework can serve as a useful checklist that can assist Muslims in providing responses to the various issues pertaining to science and technology. Islamic ethical framework must, therefore, be grounded on these five higher purposes of the maqasid in order to address the changes taking place in the world as a result of the rapid progress in the various branches of science and technology. This would provide the much needed moral norms to ensure that science and technology do not bring forth harm and destruction. Key Terms: Islam, Religious Ethics, Science And Technology, Maqasid Al-Shariah, and Culture.

The diagnosis of brain death is a controversial issue among Muslim scholars and medical experts because it involves the pronouncement of death of a patient whose heart is still beating with the assistance of a ventilator (breathing apparatus). Many countries recognise brain death as true death. However, there are religious scholars and medical experts who disagree with the concept of brain death because they believe that the soul still exists in one’s body although the brain has been diagnosed as dead. From their point of view, the heartbeat shows that the soul is still present in the body. From the perspective of Islam, a person is considered dead when there is separation between the soul and body. This paper will discuss the arguments pertaining to the soul which have been used in rejecting the concept and diagnosis of brain death.

For instance, the advancement in genetic technology has made early detection of genetic disorder possible. Similarly, the development in gene therapy techniques has raised chance in alleviating and curing genetically-linked diseases which the hope in treatment of such diseases was slim in the past. Nonetheless, in spite of beneficial effects the progress in this field may bring to us especially in regard to human health, they may not be seen as good from another angle. One of the adverse effects of the proliferation of genetic technology is the potential misuse of genetic information by health insurance companies. Thus, this article seeks to analyse the issue of genetic screening and its potential impacts on the medical takaful system (Islamic medical insurance) in Malaysia. The article will also try to explain that in the absenc...

In Malaysia, this industry is a major contributor to the economy and government initiatives support its growth to position Malaysia as a medical device manufacturing hub in the Asia- Pacific region. There are more than 180 manufacturers of medical devices in Malaysia involved in the production of sophisticated devices such as orthopedic products, surgical instruments and dialysis machines. Local companies are moving towards complying with internationally recognized quality standards such as ISO 13485 as an attempt to penetrate the global market. However, there is a religious need to provide medical devices that are certified halal in order to cater to the needs of Muslim consumers who make up 64.3% of the Malaysian population. It is an advantage that Malaysia halal certification industry is well-developed and recognized a...

Therefore, there have been calls by Muslim scholars and clerics to bridge the gap between Islam and science, especially for young Muslims, by harmonising science and Islam in education. This study aims to analyze the documents pertaining to Islam, Science, and Education (ISE) extracted from the historical literature. For the purpose of analysis, firstly documents were retrieved from a scientific database and secondly, a descriptive analysis of temporal trends was conducted. The documents clustered according to as the time-lined categories were and then analysed qualitatively. Later, using VOS viewer, the analysis of spatial distribution, networks, and keywords was conducted. It was found that the evolution of ISE converged into a broader spectrum from earlier in medicine and later to other areas, wh...

An Advance Medical Directive (AMD) is a document in which competent patients express their wishes... more An Advance Medical Directive (AMD) is a document in which competent patients express their wishes regarding their preferred choice of future medical plans in the event they become incompetent. AMD is important in relation to the patient’s right to refuse treatment. However, they must also consider cultural and religious values of different communities. In Islam, there are several concerns that need to be addressed, namely the validity of the AMD according to Islamic jurisprudence and patients’ right to end-of-life decision-making. To address these concerns, this article refers to multiple sources of Islamic jurisprudence, such as the Quran, the tradition of Prophet Muhammad and the works of Islamic scholars related to this topic. Based on the findings, Islam does not forbid the use of AMD as a method to honour patients’ wishes in their end-of-life care. Islamic jurisprudence emphasises on the importance of seeking patients’ consent before carrying out any medical procedures. However...

This is in line with the requirements in these countries that their healthcare industry must be in line with halal standards. While concern for healthcare halal products is still relatively new compared to food products and consumables, Malaysia has become the first country in the world to lead the halal certification in the field of pharmaceuticals through the halal standard MS2424:2012 Halal Pharmaceuticals. This standard helps to improve competitiveness and penetrate the international market due to the strength of the Halal logo that is highly respected and well received by Muslim countries. Halal certification system also gives confidence to the businesses, customers, suppliers and other stakeholders that pharmaceutical products are halal and Shariah compliant (Latiff and Zakaria 2016). However, in the complex healthcare ecosystem, there is another sector that plays an important role in the healthcare industry but has not yet discussed in the halal aspect seriously, namely medical devices. Medical device is any type of medical equipment available at hospitals which covers a wide range of medical equipment

In the last several years increased prevalence of this problem has been observed in many of these countries which has in turn led to increasing injecting drug use driven HIV/AIDS epidemic across the Islamic world. Whilst some countries have recently responded to the threat through the implementation of harm reduction programmes, many others have been slow to respond. In Islam, The Quran and the Prophetic traditions or the Sunnah are the central sources of references for the laws and principles that guide the Muslims' way of life and by which policies and guidelines for responses including that of contemporary social and health problems can be derived. The preservation and protection of the dignity of man, and steering mankind away from harm and destruction are central to the teachings of Islam. When viewed through the Islamic principles of th...

It would be difficult to imagine conducting our daily affairs without reliance on ICT. This technology has expedited communication between people as well as increasing the capability of data processing and storage. In other words, in this era catalysed by ICT, the geographical and political boundaries, physical distance and time difference have been rendered immaterial. People can now communicate in real time regardless of time zones and distance between them. In short, the boundaries of time and space have been torn down by ICT. As a result, we now have a global village whose interaction and communication go beyond race, religion, culture and nation. For Muslims, this is hardly surprising as the concept of global village has been mentioned in the Quran in the oft-quoted verse which is translated thus:

In 2013, there was a demand for halal certification from the medical device industry that covers a wide range of medical equipment available at the hospital from a simple tool such as plaster to a complex tool such as CT scanners machine. Halal label on medical device products is not only seen as an added value to the product but is also a requirement to market the products in Islamic countries. However, without the existence of halal standards and guidelines that are specific to medical device products, it is impossible to implement halal certification for medical devices. Therefore, this study aims to identify halal critical points in the medical device supply chain, hence suggesting a number of components for the development of halal medical device guideline. To achieve these objectives, this study used the method of data collection through libr...

We can derive great benefit as the signs in the Qur’an can bring us closer to Allah (SWT) provided that we employ our thinking ability. A Muslim scientist on the path to finding the truth who refers to the Qur’an when embarking on this quest would always remember that everything in this world is created by Allah (SWT). This realisation would increase his taqwa towards Allah (SWT) and consequently, he would ensure that his scientific research would only bring benefit to mankind and this world, and would not bring forth destruction and problems.
