This paper aims to identify challenges associated with implementing sources of separation of food waste, turning waste into compost, and proposing relevant actions using island-based hotels on Langkawi Island as a case study. This study adopted the mixed-method approach. The researcher distributed sets of questionnaire surveys to 42 hoteliers, followed by observation and interviews with 23 hoteliers. This study identified the lack of space, existing facilities, expertise, funding, adequate knowledge and support from the hotel management affected the activities separation and composting of food waste at their hotel. The study also suggested five key actions for achieving sustainable food waste management for the hotel sector in Langkawi via separate and compost food waste strategies. Those actions are (1) monitor by establishing a unique team of the hotel staff; (2) cooperation with the contractor of taking waste hotel; (3) systematic waste collection with fixed schedule; (4) waste audit and waste mapping; and (5) adequate infrastructure. This study provides information and guidelines to help hoteliers reduce food waste, save hotel operation costs, and maintain the hotel’s focus on environmentally friendly practices. Keywords: Composting food waste; food waste; hotel sector; island; separating waste

Sustainability science as a new emerging field can be a tool to solve a complex environmental anthropogenic issue by promoting an integrated approach of various disciplines, multi scale and across stakeholder. It is a problem driven and solution oriented approach in creating a sustainable society requires the problem solving skills. Thus the establishment of sustainability science demo site in Langkawi Geopark involved integration of the sustainability science concepts into natural resource management frameworks and processes for supporting opportunities for more sustainable and resilient future. This initiative is linked with Education, Ecotourism, Geopark and Local Stakeholders and focused on applying sustainability science principles to strengthen policy, legal and institutional frameworks through collaborative linkages, learning alliances and targeted interventions for capacity building in Langkawi Geopark. The objective of this initiative is to develop the whole Langkawi Geopark as a demonstration site on water and environmental sustainability education linked with ecotourism in Langkawi Geopark, where the functions of stakeholders, ecotourism and ecohydrology is integrated. It is an appropriate initiative because the components of water resources and environment are distributed throughout the Langkawi Geopark and the resources in this island have access and impact on local community. Thus, this approach is suitable in promoting sustainability science as a platform to responds to the future needs in dealing with water and environmental sustainability related issues in Langkawi. Local stakeholders workshop and interview sessions has been conducted with some local government agencies, local authorities, private entities, NGOs and local community. Field data collection and survey on water and environmental quality state condition in Langkawi were also conducted through water sampling and questionnaires distribution to local stakeholders and community in Langkawi. A five (5) ways feasibility framework has been developed and applied in order to demonstrate the sustainability science approach in Langkawi Geopark through multi stakeholders participatory process conducted during the study. The establishment of sustainability science demonstration site in Langkawi managed to illustrate the sustainability science based solutions to solve related issues on water and environmental sustainability in Langkawi Geopark and identified how environmental sustainability best practices can support sustainable development policies at local, national and regional levels.

Abstract The peatland swamp forests (PSFs) represent a unique wetland ecosystem of distinctive hy... more Abstract The peatland swamp forests (PSFs) represent a unique wetland ecosystem of distinctive hydrology, home to unique and rare habitats and species, and globally significant stores of soil carbon. Although Malaysia has significant amount of global PSF, a huge area has been converted mainly to agriculture, oil palm, and infrastructure development. The destruction of PSFs not only affects the environment but also affects the communities living in and around the PSFs, who rely on PSF ecosystem services for their livelihoods. To conserve PSFs and to sustain their ecological and socioeconomic functions, the Selangor State Forestry Department in collaboration with Global Environment Center (GEC, an NGO), local communities and other stakeholders recently introduced decentralized forest governance aiming at community-based restoration of PSF and uplifting local development. However, the understandings of decentralization approach in peatland forest governance and their outcomes are very little. Hence, this article reviews the state of decentralized peatland forest governance and its outcomes in terms of PSF conservation and local development through an extensive survey of available relevant literature. The study confirms that the forestry department delegated limited authority to the GEC for PSF restoration and stakeholders’ engagement. The GEC built social capital in the form of local associations and networks with corporate agencies, government and international bodies, and environmental enthusiasts. The regular participation of multistakeholders in reforestation activities and locals’ involvement in awareness and motivational events created a conducive environment for sustainable PSF conservation. Even though local people participate in rehabilitation activities, they have no real participation on program decision-making. Community development activities are also very limited. So sustainability of this collaboration remains a major challenge. The review concludes by noting that to make decentralized peatland forest governance effective and sustainable a strong forestry department-community-NGO partnership is needed; more socioeconomic activities and an institutional framework are of utmost importance.

Research paper thumbnail of The Vulnerability of Community Capitals as a Threat to Orang Kuala Community Development in Malaysia

SAGE Open, 2014

Community development emphasizes the utilization of community resources, also known as community ... more Community development emphasizes the utilization of community resources, also known as community capitals. However, it is often difficult for the community to access these resources; this difficulty retards development. Such is the predicament faced by the Orang Kuala, for whom coastal changes have resulted in greater difficulty in accessing their community resources. Nor is that the only threat that they face. For affirmation of these threats, this article lists two objectives, that is, to identify the accessibility of marine resources and to explain the types of threats faced by the Orang Kuala. To achieve these objectives, a study was conducted involving 51 household heads and 5 Orang Kuala informants, all of whom are residents of Sungai Layau village in Johor, Malaysia. This study uses a mixed-method approach, the concurrent embedded design, and also interview-based questionnaires and in-depth interviews simultaneously. For the first objective, the results show that the Orang Kuala can still attain community resources in the form of marine products. However, the Orang Kuala faced three types of threats: trends, shocks, and seasonal changes. The most significant threat to the Orang Kuala is the trend, that is, cost of living and social problems. These threats can reduce their chances of acquiring benefits from these community resources. This condition is called “vulnerability of community capitals.” The objective of this article is to put forth proposals on how to increase the capacity of community resources for the Orang Kuala so that their community can attain sustainable development. This proposal is based on the reality that the threats facing the Orang Kuala are at a critical level and that they are ready to accept changes.

However, since experiments require interactions between students, substances, and equipment, laboratories that can pose great risks to users. In this regards, the Ministry of Education Malaysia has taken proactive approach to enhance laboratory safety via School Science Laboratory Management and Safety guidebook, textbooks, and science-based practical workbooks that are used throughout secondary schools in Malaysia. It is challenging to ascertain students' awareness on laboratory safety throughout Malaysia, hence this study selected 8 secondary schools located in Pahang as case study to determine students' awareness on laboratory safety. A questionnaire was developed by focusing on five components, namely work procedure, safety equipment, handling experiments, chemical waste management, and emergency response plan, and then the questionnaire was completed by 558 science stream students from schools located at urban and rural areas. The results of this study indicate that the overall level of students' awareness on laboratory safety is at medium-high level, and this has shown that the existing measures in secondary school to enhance awareness of laboratory safety is adequate. Nevertheless, there are still room for improvement to further enhance students' awareness on laboratory safety in Malaysia.

The rapid transformation in Peninsular Malaysia has brought significant changes in the biophysical environment where Orang Asli are particularly affected. The Jahai in Belum-Temengor, one of the 18 indigenous communities in Peninsular Malaysia called Orang Asli, has a history of seclusion and marginalization due to the alteration in their biophysical environment. The objective of this study is to identify the impact of dam construction on the Jahai in RPS Air Banun. This research was carried out from 2014 to 2015 in RPS Air Banun, Gerik, Perak, involving a total of 48 respondents from six villages and 8 key informants. The methods employed are questionnaires, interviews with key informants and observation. Secondary data from the Department of Forestry, Peninsular Malaysia were analyzed to identified the affected area due to the dam construction in Belum-Temengor. The finding shows that the degradation in socioeconomic status of the Jahai from RPS Air Banun is closely related to the biophysical changes due to the dam construction in the area. The integration process of the community into the mainstream economic system under resettlement program has created series of social problems. Therefore, proactive efforts from related stakeholders and bodies to strengthen their socioeconomic condition are critical to improve their living condition.

Kata Kunci: Pelancongan lestari, pengurusan bencana, gempa bumi, isu dan cabaran, pelancongan Malaysia Abstract The integration of natural disaster management with sustainable tourism development is an essence preparatory tool in facing the natural disaster events.
