The condition having a high malignant transformation rate necessitates identifi cation of biomarkers to be employed for early detection of malignant change. This will infl uence the prognosis in addition to adding better quality of life to patients. Aims and Objectives: To relate the association of VEGF-460C/T polymorphism in patients with OSMF and to compare the same among healthy subjects. Materials and Methods: Thirty patients with Oral submucous fi brosis and 20 controls free from habits and any form of lesions were included in the study. The polymorphism of VEGF gene was detected by polymerase chain reaction-based restriction analysis. Results: Sixty-four percent of the population in the study was in the age group of 21-40 yrs suggesting the prominence of disease in younger individuals with male predominance. With reference to polymorphism, 6.67% of the subjects from OSMF group showed CT polymorphism and 16.67% showed TT polymorphism. There were no statistically signifi cant differences in the polymorphism between the study group and controls. However the frequency of T allele in the patient group 12 (20%) was greater than that in the control group 1 (2.5%), which was a signifi cant fi nding. There was no association between the habits, frequency of habits, duration of quid placement, site of quid placement and style of chewing with the nature of polymorphism. Conclusion: VEGF 460C/T has the potential to be used as a prognostic marker in predicting the malignant transformation of OSMF.

MM... more Background: OSF is a potentially malignant condition affecting the oral cavity and oropharynx. MMP-3 also known as Stromelysin-I is a key member of the MMP family which is responsible for degradation of collagen type II,IV,V,IX and X, proteoglycans, gelatins, fibronectin, laminin and elastin. It plays an important role in activation of pro MMP-1 into the active form of MMP-1 in malignant tissues. MMP-3 expression is low in normal tissues but it is altered during tumour formation, where remodeling of ECM is required. Purpose of the study: To assess the association of single-nucleotide polymorphisms, Adenosine (Insertion/ Deletion) in-1171 5A > 6A in the MMP-3 promoter regions of patients with oral submucous fibrosis and in healthy individuals (controls). Methods: Thirty cases of OSF were categorized according to Khanna et al classification into four groups and Twenty age and sex matched controls were included in the study. Blood samples were collected in EDTA coated vacutainers and PCR restriction analysis was done. A statistical analysis was done using Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test to assess the frequency and association of the alleles in the case-control group. Results: The result showed a statistical significance difference between the duration of habit and disease severity with polymorphisms. The result also showed a higher frequency of the 5A allele in the study group as compared to the controls. Conclusion: A long-term follow up of these patients is mandatory to see the prognosis and their susceptibility to malignancy. The positive outcome of an association of the disease with polymorphisms would result in the development of potential diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities in potentially malignant and malignant lesions.

The disease is caused by several different mutations in the LDL receptor (LDLR) gene. Several mutations have been reported in this gene in patients from several ethnic groups. Early identification of individuals carrying the defective gene could be useful in reducing the risk of atherosclerosis and myocardial infraction by the available therapeutic methods. The techniques available for determining the number of the functional LDLR molecules are difficult to carry out and expensive. Our study presents mutation analysis of the LDLR gene in 24 Indian families with FH. Material & Methods: Peripheral blood samples were obtained form individuals after taking informed consent on the condition that each of these individuals had at least one first-degree relative affected with FH. Genomic DNA was isolated, exo...

Young shoots content various chemical components such as cholin, betain, urease, cyanogenetic glucosides, oxalic acid, and benzoic acid. It has antiulcer, antifertility, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant functions. In the present study, the hepatoprotective activity of methanolic shoot extract of B. bambos was tested against carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4)-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Female Wistar rats were divided into five groups; Group I served as normal control. Groups II-VI were administered CCl4 mixed with olive oil 1:1 intraperitoneally (1 mL/kg body weight), after every 72 h for 16 days. Group II was CCl 4 negative control. Groups IV and V received methanolic shoot extract mixed with olive oil, 200 mg and 400 mg/ kg body weight, respectively. Group III received silymarin 50 mg/kg body weight for 16 days orally once daily. Methanolic extract attenuated the increase in aspartate amino transaminase (AST) and alanine amino transaminase (ALT) as well as alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and total bilirubin that occur during liver injury after CCl 4 injection. Outcome of the present study suggests that treatment with methanolic shoot extract of B. bambos-induced reduction in ALT, AST, ALP, and total bilirubin in rats indicating hepatoprotective potential of the extract.

Herpes Simplex virus-1 (HSV-1), Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Human Herpes virus-6 (HHV-6), EpsteinBarr virus (EBV), Human Papilloma virus (HPV) and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) are virus types that have been studied in the etiopathogenesis of OLP(2). EBV is associated with infectious mononucleosis, oral hairy leukoplakia (nonmal...

Phytochemical analysis of the S. macranthum aqueous fruits extract was performed and the phytoconstituents found positive for alkaloids, phenols, and saponins. Quantitative analysis of the total alkaloid and phenol was determined using gravimetric analysis and folins-phenols reagent method, respectively. The total alkaloid present was estimated to be 7.58% and total phenol of 158.774 mg/Gallic Acid Equivalent. The cytotoxicity of S. macranthum aqueous fruits extract was screened using 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazolyl-2)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and camptothecin was used as standard reference drug. At the concentration of 500 μg/ml, the aqueous extract potentially inhibited the growth of the MDA-MB-231 cell line in vitro reaching 19%, and the IC50 value was calculated to be 525...

Specific allele predisposition has been reported in the literature. The association between the p53 allele and HPV types has been reported. We analyzed the association between p53 polymorphism at codon 72 and HPV 16 and 18 genotypes in control, oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Materials and Methods: Of the total 90 cases, biopsy tissues of all groups (30 cases of OSF, OSCC and control each) were collected to extract DNA. Polymerase chain reaction was used to detect HPV 16 and 18 and alleles of codon 72 in p53 were evaluated in all the samples. Results: In control, OSF and OSCC samples showed the presence HPV 63.3%, 33.3% and 60%, respectively. In OSF, HPV 16 and 18 was detected in four and four cases, respectively, whereas in OSCC, HPV 16 and 18...

Methods The total alkaloids, phenols and flavonoids content in the methanol extract of S.macranthum fruit were estimated. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by FRAP assay, H2O2 scavenging assay and DPPH assay. Anti-inflammatory protein denaturation inhibition assay was carried out using bovine serum albumin. Anticancer property of the extract was evaluated against breast cancer MDA-MB-231 by MTT assay and comparative study was carried out on normal cells using MEF-L929 cell line. Results Phytochemical estimation revealed that total alkaloid content was measurable high (13.6 g/100 g of extract), where as the total phenolics and flavonoids content was 115.5 mg/GAE and 142.6 mg/QE. Further, the antioxidant effect of methanol extract by H2O2 assay showed co...
