The state-sponsored sector was chosen as it incorporates companies, agencies and organisations in Ireland that are charged with making decisions in relation to the Irish economy that have an impact on both men and women, making the role of the decision-makers fundamental. The lack of females in such decision-making roles has been a major issue regarding state boards in Ireland over the years. The National Women's Council of Ireland put forward the idea of a 40 per cent gender-balance policy to the Second Commission on the Status of Women in 1990, and 40 per cent gender balance in appointments of government nominees to state boards came into effect in 1991. This analysis reveals that although the level of female representation on state boards has risen since the start of the 1990s...

Following an exploration of the major theoretical approaches of SME internationalisation and performance, and entrepreneurial/market orientations, a qualitative study is undertaken on owner-managers of four born global firms to present a conceptual model. Although there are a number of studies on born global firms and extensive research on entrepreneurial and market orientations, this study proposes to combine internationalisation and orientation approaches in studying small and micro-businesses. Future studies could empirically test the proposed new conceptual model within a large sample.

Most medical incidents are the result of human error. Examination of these incidents can reveal contributing factors that can be addressed to prevent recurrence. The aim of this paper is to describe the development and institution of an incident review committee (IRC) in the setting of a large general practice. Two hundred incident reports were reviewed, resulting in meaningful clinical and business alterations to the practice. The design and running of the committee was open and collaborative. A satisfaction survey showed high acceptance among staff. The in-stigation of an IRC in general practice is new and unique, and this paper offers a template for other general practices to repli-cate.

While competitive pressures and economic conditions were a factor in the failure of many carriers, the issue of rapid growth and service quality has been blamed for the demise of these carriers. This paper examines the pressures that rapid expansion can create including downward spiraling levels of quality, declining load factors, and death. People Express represents the classic case of this syndrome in the airline industry. Its growth and service quality will be compared to Southwest Airlines, the original low-cost carrier. Further, the paper examines the growth rates and service quality at JetBlue, one of a new breed of low-cost carriers. Results indicate that JetBlue is currently posting growth rates somewhere between those of Southwest and People Express while improving its passenger complaint rates to a level nearly comparable to Southwest, an industry leader in service quality.

The objective is to determine whether there is a discrepancy between reported performance metrics of service quality and consumer perception.

Increasing understanding of management perceptions of branding is essential, given the impact of the entrepreneurial personality on SME branding, the need to create sustainable value, the emphasis of differentiation, and nurturing the generation of growth. This paper seeks to enhance the understanding of brands in service small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from a management perspective. Design/methodology/approach -A qualitative case study method was undertaken with five SMEs in Ireland over a period of 18 months to understand the context specific implementation of branding from the perspective of the owner/manager. The research approach utilized in-depth interviews, historical data, and observation with diverse service SMEs to facilitate the theory building necessary for this study.

To examine the relationship between gender role stereotypes and requisite managerial characterist... more To examine the relationship between gender role stereotypes and requisite managerial characteristics within the nursing and midwifery profession. Studies have been carried out to determine gender role stereotypes and requisite managerial characteristics across a number of industries and among student samples. No study has been carried out within the nursing and midwifery profession. In order to allow for direct comparisons with previous research Schein's Descriptive Index (SDI) was used. A total 239 undergraduate and 171 postexperience responses were collected. Female nurses and midwives did not gender type the managerial role, whereas males gender typed the managerial role in favour of men. Student nurses and midwives recorded a stronger correlation between women and management than their qualified counterparts. Males gender typed the managerial role in favour of men. With an increase in numbers of men joining the profession and increased representation of males at the Clinical Nurse Manager (CMN) level there is a possibility that the profession will become two tiered. Health care organisations should pay careful consideration to career development and implement career structures which ensure equal access to managerial roles for both genders.

The key question for the future is whether this market will succumb to the low cost model, so successful on short haul routes, or will quality of service provide adequate levels of differentiation to sustain competition, only time will tell. The objective of this research note is to comparatively analyse the reported data on customer service quality for EU and US members of the main airline alliances, -One World , Skyteam and Star. On long haul routes, membership of international alliances has become a key component of business strategy and a means of differentiating member airlines from low cost competitors in terms of quality. US published data on key elements of service quality has been reported in the Air Travel Consumer Report since 1987. In recent years the Association of European Airlines has produced a Consumer Report detailing punctuality and missing baggage statistics for 26 of its member airlines in the EU. The purpose of this study is to use this data to analyze and compare levels of customer service quality across these alliances from 2003-2006. Reasons for some of the apparent differences and similarities are explored along with suggestions for future research in the area.

Design/methodology/approach ‐ Schein's Descriptive Index was used in this study. A total of 1,236 surveys were included in the study. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC, r1) were computed to determine the relationship between the different moderators and requisite managerial characteristics. Factorial analysis and agglomerative hierarchal cluster analysis were used to identify the traits attributed to men, women and managers. Findings ‐ Male respondents continue to gender type the managerial role in favour of men. Both males and managers continue to be viewed as agentic in nature while women are viewed in more androgynous terms by both male and female respondents. Practical implications ‐ This study expands our understanding of how males and females view women, men and managers. Based on the results of this study, the authors would argue that women are better equipped to adopt an androgynous leadership style and to practise transformational leadership. Originality/value ‐ This study looks beyond ICC scores and looks at how each of the traits is linked to men, women and managers. The findings are discussed in terms of how organisations need to look beyond the misfit between women and requisite managerial characteristics and focus on what females can contribute at board level and to management in general.
