These practices are associated with degradation of the urban environment Hence, an environmentally sound garbage management system is required for the urban waste management. The concept of waste minimization needs to be adopted in such systems. It is possible to implement certain corrective measures at collection, storage, transport and disposal of urban solid waste to minimize the adverse impacts on the environment The present investigations are emphasized on generation, characterzation and ecofriendly disposal of solid waste generated in Jalgaon city, Maharashtra. In the present study the waste generation at source was studied in the various income groups of the city. The per capita waste generation was studied by sampling the waste directly from the source of generation. The study reveals that the waste generation is large in the high-income group followed by middle and low-income group public. Further ...

This location represents the major highway crossings (four) in the study area. The present investigations are on the survey of health status and lung function of traffic policemen exposed to the inferior air quality as observed on the highway crossings. The spirometric analysis of traffic policemen shows significant variation in Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR), Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1) and Forced Vital Capacity (FVC). The parameters were significantly affected in the traffic policemen as against the control group of population. It reveals significant respiratory impairment in the traffic policemen due to exposure to vehicular pollution. The study suggest the compulsory use of personal protective equipment (nose mask) by the traffic policemen during duty hours will help for the protection from vehicular pollut...

The plantation along the roads and mainly includes neem (Aadirachta indica), peepal (Ficus religiosa), banyan (Ficus benghalensis), almond (Terminalia catapa). For biomonitoring, leaf area, total chlorophyll, plant protein were analyzed to study the impact of air pollutants. It was observed that vegetation at roadside with heavy traffic and markets was much affected by vehicular emission. Significant decrease in total chlorophyll and protein content was observed with reduced leaf area. It is concluded that plants can be used as indicators for urban air pollution, and there is need to protect the roadside plants from air pollution.

Thus the primary aim of this study was to develop a new accurate, reliable and robust ion chromatography method for estimation of nitrite and nitrate. The newly developed method was applied to water and selected leafy vegetables collected from organic farming market and local vegetable market to measure levels of nitrate and nitrite. Nitrite and nitrate anions were separated on an ion Pac AS18 column by anion exchange technique. Potassium hydroxide was used as an eluent (39 mM at 1 mL/min) and detected by DS-6 suppressed conductivity detector. The calibration curve was linear over the range 1-10 ppm of nitrite and 1-100 ppm of nitrate and correlation coefficient was 0.999 for both nitrite and nitrate. The detection limits were 0.016 and 0.017 ppm for nitrite and nitrate respectively and the relative standard deviations for the two ions were less than 2 %. Hig...

This method can be used in same manner as that of mole ratio method and slope ratio method. In this method atomic absorption spectroscopy was used instead of UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Atomic absorption spectrophotometric technique is superior to UV-Vis spectrophotometry as it can be applied to colorless soluble complexes. Pb(II) and n-benzoyl-n-phenyl hydroxylamine react to form colorless complex at pH 6.5, which can be easily determined by this method. It was found that Pb(II) forms 1:2 complex with n-benzoyl-n-phenyl hydroxylamine and is quantitatively extracted back to aqueous solution for AAS analysis.

It is a finite resource, which means that the total amount of water is limited. So water is an important part of our environment. All the living creatures depend upon water in one way or the other. India can be said as one of the richest countries in the world so far as water resources or annual rainfall is concerned. In spite of this abundance peoples of our country are thirsty for water & about one third populations quench their thirst from polluted lakes, ponds & other dirt resources. This is due to improper & inadequate technologies to conserve water. This area is facing the major problem of ground water depletion due to various reasons. The North Maharashtra University campus is a part of Girna basin and located towards northeastern part of Jalgaon district of Maharashtra state. Total area under study is about 3.12 sq. km (700 acres). The area is occupied by basaltic rock. The average rainfall in this area is around 750 mm. The tot...
