There are also two forwards, a preface, an introduction and an epilogue. It has been complied by Ai-Girl Tan from Nanyang Technology University in Singapore, for those who wish to explore what creativity is and how it can be enhanced. It is not a book to be read from cover to cover, it is a handbook to be dipped into by those who wish to read and understand contemporary views concerning a very wide range of important issues concerning creativity such as new concepts, theories, models, frameworks, research and teaching experiences.

Specifically, it concentrates on the under-representation of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and workplaces across the world and whether or not “good” role models can positively impact upon the situation. My personal story as a STEM professional for over 60 years, discussing the influence that specific role models have had upon me in developing my passion for everything STEM related, and my influences as a role model myself are woven into the examination and discussion of pertinent literature.

Research paper thumbnail of Woman’s under-representation in STEM: The part role-models have played in the past and do we still need them today?

This under-representation is not something new, it was identified as problematic as early as the 1980s (Kelly et al.,1981; Smail et al., 1982). While encouraging girls to study and pursue careers in the technology sector continues to be problematic even today (Bauer, 2017). After introducing the topic, the paper begins with a brief discussion of some of the factors that researchers have believed influenced this under-representation. Several ways forward to improve the state of affairs from the literature are then discussed, before turning to concentrate specifically on role-models and the part that they can play in changing the situation. The next section focuses on the author’s personal experiences of being a role- model in a male-dominated workplace in the mid-1960s when she started ...

These were brought together with the aid of an introductory and final paper written by Baynes and Roberts in 2005. My review discusses the contents of each paper and concludes by indicating tge importance of revisiting the underlying philosophy and concepts so thoroughly dealt with in the papers suggesting that by doing so we may get to the heart of the problems now being faced in Design and Technology today.

The English D&T NC has been in existence for 30-years with a number of iterations during that time. Throughout that time-span the technological world in which D&T education exists, has changed beyond all recognition. This paper looks briefly at the concept of the knowledge economy and the development of human capital in a technological world. It then examines whether the English NC for D&T has evolved through its various iterations. A comparison between the most recent edition of the D&T NC document and the latest New Zealand Technology document through an analysis of the words used in each document was carried out utilising the frequency of all the meaningful words in the two documents. The data wou...

Research paper thumbnail of The Relationship Between the Time Spent Studying Subject Knowledge and the Attitude of Trainee Teachers to the Subject(s) They Will Teach

The article presents the research carried out to establish whether or not the length of time a student spent studying subject knowledge might have some bearing upon how positive their attitudes and beliefs were about the subject and teaching it. The data were collected from a cohort of 83 D&T Initial Teacher Training (ITT) students from a University in the North East of England using a self-completed attitude measurement scale comprising 22 statements concerning a student's attitude to teaching D&T, their beliefs about the subject, and their perception of their own D&T ability with particular reference to design activity. The results of the survey were discussed in detail, and conclusions and implications were drawn.
