In large part, this diverse population of learners has been left behind in the digital revolution, thus compounding their social, economic, and educational disadvantages. These individuals have unique patterns of engagement within educational endeavors, at times dropping in and out of programs as a result of social and economic impediments that permeate their lives. Traditional means of identifying success in their learning endeavors inadequately describe the paths these learners take on the road to acquiring digital literacy. This research explores ways to operationalize the success of adult learners who come to public access computer labs in libraries, adult education, and community organizations for tutor-facilitated support to acquire digital literacy. Initial analysis has identified unique and important insights about the learning processes of these under-served populations who come to public access computer labs in libraries and community organizations for tutor-facilitated support

However, structuring a program that serves learners with varying skills, goals, and interests is challenging. This presentation will share research findings on digital literacy acquisition in a self-paced, tutor-facilitated learning model implemented in public libraries and community centers around the country. Administrators and coordinators demonstrated the flexibility of the program by adapting it to a variety of settings. The use of a structured online learning platform with in-person help has proven to be a creative, sustainable approach that was responsive to learners\u27 needs

What’s behind this turbulence? A decade of research by the National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy (NCSALL) has shown that adult learners’ relatively poor attendance and high dropout rates do not usually occur for trivial or frivolous reasons (see Comings et al., 1999; 2000). Most adult attendance and persistence continued on page 3

What makes schools particularly interesting and challenging contexts for both the conduct and study of cooperative work is the high degree of temporal constraint and spatial isolation in which teachers must perform their work. Such theoretical tensions have arisen out of earlier, long-standing literacy debates-the Great Divide, the Literacy Thesis, and even debates about situated cognition itself. Recent reviews and critiques of the "New Literacy Studies" examined here-Brandt and Clinton, 2002; Collins and Blot, 2003; Street, 2003a, 2003b-are reaching toward new theoretical ground to address emerging concerns about the adequacy of current literacy theories framed in terms of locally situated social practices. This new work should be of interest not only to those working in the field of literacy but also to applied linguists in general, because the core issues have to do with the nature and role of context in language use, whether in oral or written form.

An effective digital literacy program helps underserved populations gain needed skills and alleviate the demand placed on public library staff. This case study presents findings on a digital literacy learning model that utilizes a self-paced online platform and in-person volunteer tutors. The researchers found that the learner/tutor relationship is an essential part of the learning process, and that tutors develop a variety of strategies for helping learners. The researchers also identify aspects of effective program implementation.
