In the case of the first Castilian universities, it nuances the excessive importance that historiography has granted to the monarchs in their foundation and instead stresses that the initiative came from bishops and cathedral chapters before being seconded by royalty. It also describes the changes in the royal intervention in university funding and protection. As regards the Crown of Aragon, it emphasises the role of the urban oligarchy in the municipal corporations in the creation of the universities, together with the king and the bishops. This was the reason for the importance of municipal funding despite the initial opposition in the 13th century to an institution with its own jurisdiction that was outside its control.

This paper is intended to analyse the rules promulgated by the Burgos Cathedral Chapter and the bishop in order to regulate good relations within the institution and shape the behaviour of clergy and faithful alike. It argues that these regulations, based on the model of monastic discipline, clashed with the resistance of clerics immersed in the conflicts of daily life and tied to the patronage and kinship relationship typical of late medieval society in Castile. A gap was opened between the monastic ideal of discipline which aimed to achieve spiritual perfection through control over the soul and the body, and the practical application of this ideal in the secular world by clergymen.

Using the periods established by the Medieval historiography as reference, the following factors are considered in the shaping of the school curriculum: libraries, manuscripts production and the activity of the schoolmasters. What is more, these factors let us identify the centres of the cultural geography of Medieval Western Europe up to the birth of the universities at the beginning of the Thirteenth century. The monastic and cathedral schools provided a syllabus that combined knowledge and ethics (littera et mores) through the study of grammar and rhetoric (cultivation of classical virtues). The majority of literate people were educated in these institutions during the medieval centuries, especially clerks and monks, versatile men who served both to the Church and the royal and lordship courts with equal skill. In this way, the ecclesiastical schools symbolized the close alliance between learning and power that was consolidated during the Late Middle Ages.

To mark the 800th anniversary of the Cathedral of Burgos, we propose to explore the dynamics, strategies, institutions and personnel behind the construction of the medieval diocese leading to the building of the temples we admire today. Our focus will be on the period 1150-1250, culminating as it does in the construction of the Cathedral of Burgos, but we welcome papers on other parts of Europe and set in other medieval periods that explore the following themes related to the emergence of the mature medieval diocese
