Research paper thumbnail of Design and analysis of a high-efficiency, cost-effective solar concentrator system for community solar cooking

Ideally, a solar concentrating system should have the following favourable properties as design criteria: (i) energy-efficient, (ii) cost-effective to construct, and (iii) highly durable even in the presence of variation of high temperature and wind. The cost of energy produced by solar thermal concentrators depends on costs of various materials which make up the system, maintenance costs and obviously the amount of solar energy collected. Serious efforts are currently devoted to making solar collector technology economically more competitive. Existing solar concentrating system designs are challenged by energy efficiency and cost of construction. This is because the installation of the major part such as tracking concentrators, are relatively expensive to construct and maintain. These concentrators are generally mostly composed of relatively expensive metallic material (...

This study presents the performance analysis of solar cooking instruments based on their geometrical aspects. The main aim is to find the best solar cooking device that can efficiently absorb heat reflecting from its surface. Here we evaluated the performance of parabolic type solar reflector and Scheffler type solar reflector in terms of its thermal efficiency and losses. The main dependent factor for this comparative analysis is the geometry of the reflectors with a diameter of 1.5 m and the radiation of the sun. For better reflectivity in both receiver and concentrator or reflector medium, stainless steel material is used. Depending on these factors, we have evaluated performance of both the reflectors and found satisfactory results. Theoretical and simulated results over various conditions prove that the Scheffler reflector performs well c...

Solar dry cleaning is the simplest, safest and most convenient way to dry clean clothes without consuming any fuel or heating up the appliances which use solar energy. In this Paper the thermal performance of Scheffler Reflector at Gajraj Drycleaners is evaluated. The Experimental investigations were carried out to determine performance of solar scheffler Reflector during summer season in Nagar (18° 20' N, 78° 12' E). In this solar thermal system total 15 dishes of 16 sq. meters Scheffler Reflector are used which generates 150 C temp. In this method a primary reflecting parabolic surface concentrates the solar radiation on it and reflects them on to the secondary reflectors. This secondary reflector then focus the incident radiation at the point of interest, thus generated heat/steam can be used for huge dry cleaning purpose. In this work the design of 16sq.m solar refle...

The system consists of a PV array subsystem as the primary source of energy, the electric grid as an auxiliary source of energy, the battery bank as a stand by source that feeds the electrical load in case of grid failure. This paper also focuses on the operation control of the system. This control is on/off switch control according to modes of operation of the system and there is a control of inverter using PI controller to achieve the maximum power point of the PV array. Finally this paper gives the simulation results of the required system output parameters; PV output...
