Adolescents engage in sexual intercourse before finishing junior high school. Adolescents are at high risk of developing sexual risk behavior. The rate of risky sexual behaviors and the spread of STIs continue to be increase among the adolescent population. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the knowledge and attitudes towards prevention of STIs among basic 8 pupils of Kaladan SDA JHS in the Tamale metropolis
Methods: Institution based descriptive cross sectional study was conducted among Kaladan SDA JHS Tamale from 5th November, 2022 to 10th December, 2022. The study respondents were selected through systematic random sampling techniques and the data was collected through self-administered questionnaires and interview guide. A sample size of 110 were selected and the data analysis was carried out quantitatively using the computer packages, STATA version 14 for analysis.
Results: 110 respondents participated in this study of those 93% of them have awareness of the existence of sexual transmitted infections including HIV. However, 57% and 67% of the respondents have poor knowledge on sign and symptoms and effects of STIs respectively. Among the total study respondents, about 80% of them had previously practiced in sexual activity. 73% of the respondent said they never tested for STIs, of which 46% feel it is not necessary to go for a test and 38% feel shy. From the respondents who had practiced sex, 33% of them had always used condom during their sexual intercourse with their partners, while 50% of them never used condom during sexual intercourse and 17% sometimes.
Conclusions: Regardless of adolescents’ knowledge on the existence of STIs, they still have inadequate essential information about STIs, hence large number of the adolescents have been practicing risky sexual behaviors that might predispose them for different sexual and reproductive health problems.
Therefore, the school should emphasize on promoting peer educators and peer discussion to protect adolescents and youth from risky sexual behaviors.
