The method is based on a lumped parameter approach under the hypothesis of magnetic linearity. The model involves a matrix of self and mutual impedances deduced from electromagnetic field solutions including eddy current effects. The matrix, inserted into circuit equations, leads to current sharing evaluation

This method is now extended to multiply connected domains with boundary conditions well suited to the study of power transformer cores. Essential features of the present approach are a consistent use of integral constraints in the variational formulation of the problem and a full exploitation of the space and time symmetries involved. Some numerical results for twwiimensional problems are discussed in the last sections.

This analysis employs a two-dimensional finite-element technique including eddy-current effects. In linear systems this approach leads to a circuit model described by an impedance matrix, while, in presence of saturable media, field and circuit equations are simultaneously solved by a voltage-driven field formulation. The paper analyses the behaviour of two different busbar systems when a short-circuit currentflows through them; the results obtained by the proposed approach are compared with those deduced according to the methods suggested by the IEC Standards and by the symmetrical components.

Research paper thumbnail of Reduction of magnetic fields in power lines: cables and GIL

WORKSHOP on “PROTECTION IN COMPLEX AND DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS INCLUDING RAILWAYS”, June 3-5, 2002 Budapest, Hungary, 2002

The aim of this work is to give a contribution to the methods for reducing the magnetic field gen... more The aim of this work is to give a contribution to the methods for reducing the magnetic field generated by power lines by a suitable disposal of conductors and their metallic sheath. The particular cases of cables and gas insulated lines (GIL) are examined because they are considered an important tool to reduce electromagnetic pollution at extremely low frequencies in power applications. The presented results improve the ones proposed mainly in [2-6] and they are based on a simple computation of magnetic field in linear media including the effects of conductor disposition on the power line behavior. In particular the power line is modeled as in [6] by means of an impedance matrix whose coefficients are computed according to traditional well known reference books like [7]. The general results on conductor disposition for 3-phase lines are easily obtained and new interesting results are obtained when using an asymmetrical phase-split disposition useful when an half space must have lower field levels than the remaining one; a parametric analysis of lines having each conductor equipped with a sheath usually for mechanical protection or to get or radial electrical field or to contain gas. In the most complex cases the results predicted by the simplified analysis are satisfactorily confirmed by the ones obtained by means of the more accurate finite element analysis mainly because the main interest is devoted to the far from sources magnetic field

2019 IEEE/IAS 55th Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference (I&CPS), 2019

The resonant grounding is one of the possible methods of system neutral grounding for the medium-... more The resonant grounding is one of the possible methods of system neutral grounding for the medium-voltage distribution. IEEE standards do define this grounding configuration, but important advantages and drawbacks of the resonant grounding might not be fully known, due to its rather uncommon application in North America. On the other hand, resonant grounding in Europe is imposed by the increased requirements for power quality, especially for medium-voltage industrial users, and imposed to electric utilities by Regulatory Authorities, with the purpose to protect the interests of users and consumers. Level of the continuity of the service, magnitude and phase of ground-fault currents, magnitude of touch voltages, all depend on how the neutral is connected to ground. In this paper, the authors will discuss electrical safety features of the resonant ground, and analyze issues when a substation, originally operated with different methods of system neutral grounding, is reconfigured with a resonant ground.

Research paper thumbnail of An Analytical Evaluation of the Prospective <formula formulatype="inline"><tex Notation="TeX">${\rm I}^{2}{\rm t}$</tex></formula> to Assess Short-Circuit Capabilities of Cables and Busways

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2010

By conservatively assuming an adiabatic process, all of the thermal let-through energy I2t, also referred to as Joule Integral, is accumulated within the components involved in short circuits; therefore, the temperature of their conductive materials is elevated. The thermal energy is proportional to the square of the short-circuit current. Evaluating the prospective I2t is, therefore, crucial in order to assess the short-circuit capability of cables and busways to withstand the thermal stress without failing or triggering fires in neighboring materials. In this paper, in the general case of resistive-inductive circuits, methods to evaluate the Joule Integral and to perform the assessment will be provided. The differences for power frequencies of 50 and 60 Hz are also shown.

We build the objective function in a way that minimizes the magnetic stray field and the current unbalance of a bunch of rectilinear power cables. Our principal aim is to extend and verify the ability of the VIS algorithm to solve combinatorial problems represented by nonlinear objectives that are not usually solved in MOCO problems.

The proposed method gives the currents and the electromotive forces in the windings, the mechanical force on the movable core and the magnetic field distributions. The effects of the pole geometry and of the shading rings conductance are analyzed, in order to improve electromagnet performances. The experimental verifications validate the numerical results.
