Research paper thumbnail of A soft computing-based study on WEDM optimization in processing Inconel 625

Neural Computing and Applications, Mar 22, 2021

The major WEDM variables (pulse-on time, pulse-off time, servo voltage, wire feed rate) were experimentally investigated to address multiple aspects of this process, namely to reduce the gap current and surface roughness and increase the cutting speed. After testing the statistical significance of the major WEDM parameters for the three responses, an advanced statistical procedure was utilized for tackling correlations among outputs and their integration into the WEDM output performance in a fully objective manner. The Bayesian regularized neural network established a highly accurate process model that was engaged as the objective function for the evolutionary algorithms to identify the optimal machining conditions. The following algorithms were employed: particle swarm optimization, teaching-learning based optimization, grey wolf optimization and Jaya algorithm. Their results were thoroughly analyzed in terms of accuracy, i.e., repeatability of the resulting solutions, convergence speed and computational time, including assessment of the hyperparameter effects. The obtained optimal solution was highly convincing and it was successfully validated in a confirmation run. Therefore, the benefits of these findings are twofold, offering: (i) a thorough analysis of the four metaheuristics effectiveness in dealing with a real industrial problem, (ii) useful insights for controlling WEDM variables to enhance the technological, environmental and economic aspects at the same time.

With the aim of designing laser cutting parameters that satisfy the specifications of multiple responses, an advanced multiresponse optimization methodology was used. After the processing of experimental data to develop the process measure using statistical methods, the functional relationship between cutting parameters and the process measure was determined by artificial neural networks (ANNs). Using the trained ANN model, particle swarm optimization (PSO) was employed to find the optimal values of laser cutting parameters. Since the effectiveness of PSO could be affected by its parameter tuning, the settings of PSO algorithm-specific parameters were analyzed in detail. The optimal laser cutting parameters proposed by PSO were implemented in the validation run, showing the superior cut characteristics produced by the optimized parameters and proving the efficacy of the suggested approach in practice. In particular, it is demonstrated that the quality of the Nimonic 263 cut area and the microstructure were significantly improved, as well as the mechanical characteristics.

Research paper thumbnail of Particle swarm optimisation in designing parameters of manufacturing processes: A review (2008–2018)

Applied Soft Computing, Nov 1, 2019

The evolutionary optimisation algorithms appeared as an effective alternative to conventional sta... more The evolutionary optimisation algorithms appeared as an effective alternative to conventional statistical methods that have certain limitations in optimising complex manufacturing processes. Considering works published in the last decade, this paper presents an analysis of the particle swarm optimisation (PSO) implementation in designing parameters of heterogeneous manufacturing processes, both conventional and emerging, new processes. The literature review and analysis was structured according to the complexity of the optimisation problem (single response and multiresponse problems), and the development of an objective function for PSO. The tuning of the PSO algorithm-specific parameters was analysed in detail. The PSO algorithm performance was benchmarked with the results of other methods, including evolutionary algorithms, in designing process parameters. The concerns in applying PSO for multiresponse manufacturing problems were highlighted, and recommendations for future research were drawn. Such a comprehensive review on the PSO application in optimising manufacturing processes, including the detailed discussion on the algorithm characteristics and benchmark with other optimisation procedures, has not been pursued so far. Therefore, this review analysis provides hands on information for researchers and engineers at one place, and it is believed that the findings could serve as a basis for the future research and implementation directions.

Implementation of the advanced cost-effective methodologies for product and/or process quality improvement is an effective mean to fulfil or even exceeds customer’s expectations. This paper presents the analysis of a performance of automatic enamelling process for a non-normal data distribution, conducted within the six sigma project implemented in a cookware production system. Drawing on the results of the process analysis, process improvement was performed by using Taguchi's location and dispersion modelling approach. It proved its effectiveness in determining the significant effects of process parameters on the response mean and variation and finding optimal parameter settings in the observed single-response system.

Today, the design of a uniform inspection plan for a measuring part presents a rather complex issue due to the following: (i) metrological complexity of a measuring part; (ii) skills and knowledge of a designer / inspection planner; and (iii) software for CAI model, considered as a part of an integrated CAD-CAPP-CAM-CAI system. This issue could be addressed by the usage of expert systems that generate a conceptual inspection plan for a measuring part, based on which the inspection plan for a selected CMM could be automatically developed. This paper presents the development of a model of an automatic inspection planning system for CMMs, and, in particular, the developed knowledge base model.

Research paper thumbnail of Novel Approach to Multi-Response Optimisation for Correlated Responses

This paper presents a novel, general and intelligent approach to multiresponse process optimisati... more This paper presents a novel, general and intelligent approach to multiresponse process optimisation, whose purpose is to obtain a single optimum setting of process parameters that meets specifications of all considered, possibly correlated, responses. The approach is based on Taguchi quality loss function, multivariate statistical methods: Principal componenet analysis and Grey relational analysis, and artificial intelligence techniques: Artificial neural networks and Genehic algorithm. The proposed model considers process optimisation in a general case where analytical relations and interdependences in a process are unknown, thus making it applicable to various types of process optimisation problems. The implementation of the suggested approach is presented on a study that discusses the optimisation of thermosonic gold wire bonding process in semiconductor industry, for the assembly of microelectronic devices. The results confirm the effectiveness of this approach in the presence of three correlated responses (product quality characteristics).
