MALKINSON, TERRANCE JOHN of Calgary Alberta. Born in Calgary November 3, 1948 at 9:16 am the
son of John and Gladys Malkinson, and brother of Brenda (Edmonton) and Stuart (Surrey). Early
education occurred at Queens Park and Briar Hill Elementary schools, Branton Junior High School (62,
63, 64) and William Aberhart High School (65, 66, 67). Graduated from the University of Calgary in
1971 with a B.Sc. and earned his Information Technology Professional Certificate in 1999 and his B.
Tech. in 2001 from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. During his high school and university
years he spent the summers working at the Elks Lodge and Golf Club (currently the Winston Golf Club;
formerly the Regal Golf Club) landscaping, planting and nurturing many of the beautiful trees which
grace the grounds. Immediately upon university graduation he was recruited to join the University of
Calgary as one of the founding members of the Faculty of Medicine. Over 26 years he advanced
through the technical ladder to a position of senior research practice, management and educational
leadership supporting many graduate students and advancing medical knowledge. His interest in basic
and applied research was a lifelong passion. Following his public service with the University he worked
with the General Electric Company as a manager and documentation specialist throughout GE's North
American operations; a logistics manager with Sears Canada; and with SAIT’s School of Health and
Public Safety focusing on basic and applied research. He was involved in a number of roles within the
advanced technology and education sectors locally, nationally, and internationally. He was a proud
member of the SAIT Presidents Circle, SAIT’s Heritage Hall Society and was a passionate supporter of
SAIT TROJAN athletics. He was a long-time senior life member of the Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers and an Emeritus Fellow with the Biomedical Engineering Society. He was
professionally certified by the Alberta Society of Engineering Technologists. He authored over 600
earned and well-respected research publications and presented the results of original basic and applied
research at numerous local, national, and international professional meetings. He mentored
undergraduate students, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, academic staff, and visiting
scientists. He was a member of the editorial advisory board of “IEEE The Institute” (2010-2014), and
Vice-Chair of communications for IEEE-USA (2004-2010). He was a pioneer in lifelong learning,
advancing his career by pursuing continuing education opportunities at a variety of institutions including
the University of Calgary, the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, the Banff Centre for
Management, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California, and the University
of Colorado. Of particular significance in his life was participation in many wilderness adventure
leadership programs facilitated by Outward Bound Canada and Outward Bound Singapore. He was
elected to the Board of Governors of the IEEE Engineering Management Society (2004-2007) and was
editor of IEEE Engineering Management (2003-2007). He was an associate editor and contributor to
IEEE Canadian Review (1998-present). He was elected to the Senate of the University of Calgary (2002-
2008) and served many roles, mentoring students and faculty and enhancing the University's reputation
in the community. He was a participant in many charitable fund-raising athletic events and was a finisher
of Ironman Canada ꟷ 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012; Ironman New
Zealand 2007, Ultraman Canada 2008, and Challenge Penticton iron distance Triathlon in 2013. He was
awarded numerous earned peer awards for professional achievements. In honour of his lifelong and
many contributions to the University of Calgary, the Calgary community, and the advancement of
scientific knowledge, he was inducted into the Order of the University of Calgary in 1997. He was SAIT
Polytechnique’s 2024 Distinguished Alumni in recognition of his demonstrated leadership skills,
exceptional achievements in business and industry, outstanding contributions to the community, and a
history of support for education. He was named as one of Calgary’s 2025 compelling citizens as an

Every person’s life is unique. The experiences we have during our life’s journey shape us; and give our lives meaning and purpose. As we journey through the stages of life, from infancy to seniority some believe they have no control over what happens to them. Others are proactive, realizing that there are many opportunities for learning and achieving their potential. They realize their vision, often overcoming seemingly insurmountable challenges. The number one regret of the dying is not about money; it is about experiences they missed — and not living an authentic life.
As I approached my 75th birthday I became increasingly occupied with reflecting on my life. The link below accesses a recent article on this topic. It’s goal is to briefly share my life’s journey with readers, followed by my most important lessons learned during the past 75 years. For each of us, the best legacy is to have made the world a better place, because of our contributions. Link to the article below:
