Biomarkers indicating and predicting disease development towards these unfavorable directions are therefore on high demand. Many studies have demonstrated that changes in miRNAs expression may be associated with a response to treatment and disease prognosis, thus suggesting its potential biomarker value for a broad spectrum of clinical applications. The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression level of miR-181a-5p, miR-630, and its targets in NSCLC tumor tissue and plasma samples; and to analyze its association with NSCLC patient’s response to treatment and disease prognosis. Lietuvoje nėra duomenų apie sportininkų ir sporto trenerių ekologiško maisto vartojimą. Tai nulėm... more Lietuvoje nėra duomenų apie sportininkų ir sporto trenerių ekologiško maisto vartojimą. Tai nulėmė mūsų tyrimo tikslą – ištirti ir apibūdinti Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkų ir sporto trenerių ekologiškų maisto produktų vartojimo įpročius bei juos lemiančius veiksnius. Siekiant įvertinti ekologiškų maisto produktų vartojimą, buvo apklausti 158 Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkai ir 135 sporto treneriai. Tyrimo rezultatai parodė, kad ekologiško maisto vartotojų skaičius sportininkų ir sporto trenerių grupėse didelis, sudaro atitinkamai 97 ir 88,1 %, tačiau ekologiškų maisto produktų vartojimas yra per retas. Kasdien ekologišką maistą vartoja tik 27,9 % sportininkų ir tik 36,5 % sporto trenerių vyrų. Sportininkai ir sporto treneriai dažniausiai ekologiškų produktų asortimentą formuoja iš vaisių ir uogų, daržovių, kiaušinių, mėsos bei jos produktų, tačiau pastarąjį lemia lytis ir amžius. Tyrimo tikslas – apibūdinti ir įvertinti Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkų mitybos įproči... more Tyrimo tikslas – apibūdinti ir įvertinti Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkų mitybos įpročius, mitybos režimą, atsižvelgiant į kultivuojamą sporto šaką, lytį ir amžių. Panaudojus valdžią mitybos anketą tiesioginiu interviu metodu buvo ištirti 247 Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkai. Sportininkų kūno sandara tirta BIA tetra – poliariniu elektrodų metodu. Tyrimo rezultatai parodė, kad Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkų mitybos įpročius lemia lytis, mažiau – amžius ir kultivuojama sporto šaka. Sportininkai vyrai dažniau vartoja duonos kepinius, virtas bulves, kiaušinius, riebią kiaulieną, mėsos pusgaminius, konservus, keptas bulves, bulvių traškučius ir gaiviuosius gėrimus su dirbtiniais saldikliais. O sportininkių moterų mitybos įpročiai sveikesni. Moterys dažniau vartoja šviežias daržoves, vaisius, paukštieną ir rečiau renkasi vartoti sveikatai nepalankų maistą. Lietuvoje nėra paskelbta oficialių rekomendacijų, kiek per dieną sportininkams būtina suvartoti vandens ir kitų gėrimų. Nėra duomenų, kuriuos pasitelkus galima būtų įvertinti sportininkų vandens ir gėrimų vartojimo įpročius. Mūsų tyrimo tikslas – nustatyti ir įvertinti Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkų skysčių vartojimo ypatumus sportinės veiklos metu. Siekiant įvertinti vandens ir gėrimų vartojimo įpročius, buvo ištirti 247 Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkai. Tyrimui taikytas anketinės apklausos metodas. Sportininkų kūno masės matavimai atlikti pasitelkiant BIA tetrapoliarinį elektrodų metodą. Ūgio matavimai atlikti panaudojant elektronines svarstykles. The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients with uri... more The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients with uric acid and calcium-based kidney stones and to investigate the relationship between metabolic syndrome and type of kidney stone using infrared spectroscopy to evaluate the chemical composition of kidney stones Sixty patients with urolithiasis were examined. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed according to clinical and laboratory criteria. Weight, height, body mass index, waist circumference, and blood pressure of patients were measured. Blood tests were performed. Concentrations of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose and uric acid in blood, were analyzed. The kidney stones of patients were removed and the composition of each kidney stone was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in 55% of the patients; 86.7% of patients with uric acid (UA) kidney stones and 44.4% of patients with calcium (Ca) based stones had metabolic syndrome. All patients diagnosed with metabolic syndrome were overweight or obese. Even though there were no statistically significant differences observed concerning the anthropometrical measures and arterial blood pressure (BP) between the UA stone formers and Ca-based stone formers, the results show a trend that failed to reach significance: higher waist size, BMI and arterial BP means in the group of patients with UA stones than in the patients with Ca-based stones. No statistically significant differences in lipid profile between the groups were found. Concentration of UA in blood serum was significantly higher in patients with UA kidney stones than it was in patients with Ca-based kidney stones. Significant positive correlation between triglycerides and serum UA concentrations, as well as body mass index and serum UA concentration, and negative correlation between concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and UA was found. Conclusion: Metabolic syndrome was more prevalent in patients with uric acid stones than in the patients with calcium-based kidney stones, even though this relationship was not statistically significant, most likely because of the limited number of patients investigated.

Tyrimo tikslas – nustatyti ir įvertinti Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkų mitybos įpročius ir maisto papildų vartojimą lemiančius veiksnius. Pasitelkus tiesioginio interviu metodą buvo ištirti 18 ± 3,3 metų amžiaus vidutiniškai per dieną 178,2 ± 63,7 min. besitreniruojantys 247 Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkai. Tyrimo rezultatai parodė, kad daugiausia sportininkus apie mitybą, maisto papildus informuoja sporto treneriai ir populiarioji literatūra. O gydytojų, per televizijos ir radijo laidas pateikiama informacija yra ribota ir nepakankama, kad skatintų tinkamus sportininkų mitybos ir maisto papildų vartojimo įpročius. 81,4 % sportininkų pagrindinis maisto produktų pasirinkimo kriterijus yra skonis. Siekiant geresnių sportinių rezultatų, sportininkams būtina išugdyti santykinai didelę raumenų ma... more Siekiant geresnių sportinių rezultatų, sportininkams būtina išugdyti santykinai didelę raumenų masę. Anabolinis su maistu vartojamų aminorūgščių poveikis naujai sintetinamiems baltymams priklauso nuo vartojamų baltymų kiekio ir kokybinės aminorūgščių sudėties. Esant nepakankamam endogeninių nepakeičiamųjų aminorūgščių prieinamumui, baltymų sintezės greitis raumenyse gali sumažėti. Tyrimo tikslas – įvertinti Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkų mitybos daromą įtaką raumenų masei. Buvo tirti 18,0 ± 3,3 metų amžiaus Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkai (n = 323). Sportininkų raumenų masės matavimai atlikti pasitelkus BIA tetrapoliarinį elektrodų metodą. Faktinės mitybos tyrimas atliktas taikant 24 valandų faktinės mitybos apklausos metodą. Sportininkų vartojami baltymų ir angliavandenių kiekis sudaro atitinkamai 1,7 ± 0,6 g/kg ir 5,5 ± 2,1 g/kg kūno masės. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the bioactive ingredient – oat β-glucan – on... more The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the bioactive ingredient – oat β-glucan – on the quality characteristics of the fermented milk products (kefir, yogurt and fermented milk beverages) made on buttermilk-skimmed milk mixture base and establish the influence of the consumption of one of them on the health characteristics of volunteers. The enrichment of fermented milk products with 0.6 % oat β-glucan had no impact on the fermentation time, enhanced the apparent viscosity and changed sensory properties. The experiments of medical nutrition of volunteers showed a significant decrease of total (p<0.05) and low density lipoprotein (p<0.05) cholesterol, increase in high density lipoprotein cholesterol (p<0.01) in their blood after a 21-day period of consumption of fermented product with β-glucan. Results of the structural analysis of urinary sediments by means of infrared spectral microscopy ... more Results of the structural analysis of urinary sediments by means of infrared spectral microscopy are presented. The results are in good agreement with the results of standard optical microscopy in the case of singlecomponent and crystalline urinary sediments. It is found that for noncrystalline or multicomponent sediments, the suggested spectroscopic method is superior to optical microscopy. The chemical structure of sediments of any molecular origin can be elucidated by this spectroscopic method. The method is sensitive enough to identify solid particles of drugs present in urine. Sulfamethoxazole and traces of other medicines are revealed in this study among the other sediments. We also show that a rather good correlation exists between the type of urinary sediments and the renal stones removed from the same patient. Spectroscopic studies of urinary stones and corresponding sediments from 76 patients suffering from renal stone disease reveal that in 73% of cases such correlation exists. This finding is a strong argument for the use of infrared spectral microscopy to prevent kidney stone disease because stones can be found in an early stage of formation by using the nonintrusive spectroscopic investigation of urinary sediments. Some medical recommendations concerning the overdosing of certain pharmaceuticals can also be derived from the spectroscopic studies of urinary sediments.

The aim of this study was to determine distribution of the Candida (C.) species in onychomycosis ... more The aim of this study was to determine distribution of the Candida (C.) species in onychomycosis and analyses in vitro susceptibility to fluconazole and itraconazole. In recent years, cases of onychomycosis in Lithuania caused by Candida have increased significantly. In the period between 2009 and 2016, a total of 8149 clinical cases (outpatients and inpatients) were investigated at the Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Clinics (VUH SC). Candida yeasts were identified using VITEK 2 (BioMerieux, France) and IVD Maldi biotyper 2.3 (Bruker Daltonik GmbH, Germany), automated systems for identification of yeasts. The antifungal susceptibility to the Candida species were determined by disc diffusion. Candida spp. were the most frequently isolated pathogens in onychomycosis during the investigation period. Several potential mechanisms of homocysteine (Hcy) influence on the pathogenesis of atheroscleros... more Several potential mechanisms of homocysteine (Hcy) influence on the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis including lipid peroxidation are described. The aim of this study was to determine a possible relationship between blood serum Hcy levels and lipid peroxidation in patients suffering from coronary heart disease of various stages. Serum Hcy level was determined by the fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA) method with an IMx ABBOTT analyser. Malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration and catalase (CAT) activity were measured spectrophotometrically. Patients were grouped into: 1) individuals suffering from acute myocardial infarction (AMI, n = 32); 2) patients with unstable angina pectoris (USAP, n = 23); 3) individuals with stable angina pectoris (SAP, n = 25). The technology of a functional fermented buttermilk-based beverage was developed and the impact o... more The technology of a functional fermented buttermilk-based beverage was developed and the impact of beverage consumption on the health parameters of young volunteers was studied. Three functional beverages were made on the basis of buttermilk, which differed in the composition. The beverage containing the buttermilk-skimmed milk-milk protein concentrate (0.3%) as a product with the preferred quality characteristics (synaeresis, viscosity, sensory properties, and acceptability) was used for further studies regarding the impact on human health. The medical nutrition experiments did not show any statistically significant effect on the biochemical blood parameters of 25 young volunteers after a 21-day period of the consumption of fermented buttermilk beverage with milk protein concentrate, although some of them (e.g. total, low-and high-density cholesterol, triacylglycerol concentrations, etc.) slightly decreased. The anthropometric and body composition, arterial blood pressure, and pulse evaluation indicators of recipients did not change significantly.
The aim of this study was to determine the impact of biologically active inulin-type prebiotic, i... more The aim of this study was to determine the impact of biologically active inulin-type prebiotic, introduced into the yogurt, on the quality characteristics of the product. The influence of inulin-enriched yogurt on health characteristics of patients with metabolic syndrome was determined. Enrichment of yogurt with inulin improved the sensoric properties (flavor and consistency) of the product. Individuals with metabolic syndrome showed significant decrease of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (p<0.05), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (p<0.05) and malondialdehyde (p<0.01) after a 28-days period of consumption of yogurt with inulin. Consumption of inulin-enriched yogurt had a tendency towards lower total cholesterol and had no effect on the triglyceride concentration. No significant effect on glucose concentration was observed. There is a lack of studies on its association with different grades of essential hypertension (EH). Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the association between size of EAT depots and the risk of EH taking into account its grade. Materials and Methods: Non-obese adult patients with various cardiovascular diseases were investigated: 157 of them had essential hypertension and 101 did not. Hypertensive patients were assigned to three groups according to the grade of hypertension. EAT volume and thickness on ventricular free walls (6 locations) and grooves (5 locations) were measured using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and compared between groups. O ekologiško maisto vartojimas tarp sporto trenerių neturi sąsajų su gaunamomis pajamomis. Mūsų tyrimo rezultatai pagrindžia ekologiškų maisto produktų gamybos ir asortimento plėtros poreikį. Formuojant ekologiškų maisto produktų rinką, gamintojams būtų tikslinga orientuotis į didelio meistriškumo sportininkų segmentą bei juos ugdančius sporto trenerius.

The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients with uri... more The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients with uric acid and calcium-based kidney stones and to investigate the relationship between metabolic syndrome and type of kidney stone using infrared spectroscopy to evaluate the chemical composition of kidney stones Sixty patients with urolithiasis were examined. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed according to clinical and laboratory criteria. Weight, height, body mass index, waist circumference, and blood pressure of patients were measured. Blood tests were performed. Concentrations of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose and uric acid in blood, were analyzed. The kidney stones of patients were removed and the composition of each kidney stone was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in 55% of the patients; 86.7% of patients with uric acid (UA) kidney stones and 44.4% of patients with calcium (Ca) based stones had metabolic syndrome. All patients diagnosed with metabolic syndrome were overweight or obese. Even though there were no statistically significant differences observed concerning the anthropometrical measures and arterial blood pressure (BP) between the UA stone formers and Ca-based stone formers, the results show a trend that failed to reach significance: higher waist size, BMI and arterial BP means in the group of patients with UA stones than in the patients with Ca-based stones. No statistically significant differences in lipid profile between the groups were found. Concentration of UA in blood serum was significantly higher in patients with UA kidney stones than it was in patients with Ca-based kidney stones. Significant positive correlation between triglycerides and serum UA concentrations, as well as body mass index and serum UA concentration, and negative correlation between concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and UA was found. Conclusion: Metabolic syndrome was more prevalent in patients with uric acid stones than in the patients with calcium-based kidney stones, even though this relationship was not statistically significant, most likely because of the limited number of patients investigated.

Tyrimo tikslas – nustatyti ir įvertinti Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkų mitybos įpročius ir maisto papildų vartojimą lemiančius veiksnius. Pasitelkus tiesioginio interviu metodą buvo ištirti 18 ± 3,3 metų amžiaus vidutiniškai per dieną 178,2 ± 63,7 min. besitreniruojantys 247 Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkai. Tyrimo rezultatai parodė, kad daugiausia sportininkus apie mitybą, maisto papildus informuoja sporto treneriai ir populiarioji literatūra. O gydytojų, per televizijos ir radijo laidas pateikiama informacija yra ribota ir nepakankama, kad skatintų tinkamus sportininkų mitybos ir maisto papildų vartojimo įpročius. 81,4 % sportininkų pagrindinis maisto produktų pasirinkimo kriterijus yra skonis. Anabolinis su maistu vartojamų aminorūgščių poveikis naujai sintetinamiems baltymams priklauso nuo vartojamų baltymų kiekio ir kokybinės aminorūgščių sudėties. Esant nepakankamam endogeninių nepakeičiamųjų aminorūgščių prieinamumui, baltymų sintezės greitis raumenyse gali sumažėti. Tyrimo tikslas – įvertinti Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkų mitybos daromą įtaką raumenų masei. Buvo tirti 18,0 ± 3,3 metų amžiaus Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkai (n = 323). Sportininkų raumenų masės matavimai atlikti pasitelkus BIA tetrapoliarinį elektrodų metodą. Faktinės mitybos tyrimas atliktas taikant 24 valandų faktinės mitybos apklausos metodą. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the bioactive ingredient – oat β-glucan – on... more The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the bioactive ingredient – oat β-glucan – on the quality characteristics of the fermented milk products (kefir, yogurt and fermented milk beverages) made on buttermilk-skimmed milk mixture base and establish the influence of the consumption of one of them on the health characteristics of volunteers. The enrichment of fermented milk products with 0.6 % oat β-glucan had no impact on the fermentation time, enhanced the apparent viscosity and changed sensory properties. The experiments of medical nutrition of volunteers showed a significant decrease of total (p<0.05) and low density lipoprotein (p<0.05) cholesterol, increase in high density lipoprotein cholesterol (p<0.01) in their blood after a 21-day period of consumption of fermented product with β-glucan. Results of the structural analysis of urinary sediments by means of infrared spectral microscopy ... more Results of the structural analysis of urinary sediments by means of infrared spectral microscopy are presented. The results are in good agreement with the results of standard optical microscopy in the case of singlecomponent and crystalline urinary sediments. It is found that for noncrystalline or multicomponent sediments, the suggested spectroscopic method is superior to optical microscopy. The chemical structure of sediments of any molecular origin can be elucidated by this spectroscopic method. The method is sensitive enough to identify solid particles of drugs present in urine. Sulfamethoxazole and traces of other medicines are revealed in this study among the other sediments. We also show that a rather good correlation exists between the type of urinary sediments and the renal stones removed from the same patient. Spectroscopic studies of urinary stones and corresponding sediments from 76 patients suffering from renal stone disease reveal that in 73% of cases such correlation exists. This finding is a strong argument for the use of infrared spectral microscopy to prevent kidney stone disease because stones can be found in an early stage of formation by using the nonintrusive spectroscopic investigation of urinary sediments. Some medical recommendations concerning the overdosing of certain pharmaceuticals can also be derived from the spectroscopic studies of urinary sediments.

In recent years, cases of onychomycosis in Lithuania caused by Candida have increased significantly. In the period between 2009 and 2016, a total of 8149 clinical cases (outpatients and inpatients) were investigated at the Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Clinics (VUH SC). Candida yeasts were identified using VITEK 2 (BioMerieux, France) and IVD Maldi biotyper 2.3 (Bruker Daltonik GmbH, Germany), automated systems for identification of yeasts. The antifungal susceptibility to the Candida species were determined by disc diffusion. Candida spp. were the most frequently isolated pathogens in onychomycosis during the investigation period. The aim of this study was to determine a possible relationship between blood serum Hcy levels and lipid peroxidation in patients suffering from coronary heart disease of various stages. Serum Hcy level was determined by the fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA) method with an IMx ABBOTT analyser. Malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration and catalase (CAT) activity were measured spectrophotometrically. Patients were grouped into: 1) individuals suffering from acute myocardial infarction (AMI, n = 32); 2) patients with unstable angina pectoris (USAP, n = 23); 3) individuals with stable angina pectoris (SAP, n = 25). The technology of a functional fermented buttermilk-based beverage was developed and the impact o... more The technology of a functional fermented buttermilk-based beverage was developed and the impact of beverage consumption on the health parameters of young volunteers was studied. Three functional beverages were made on the basis of buttermilk, which differed in the composition. The beverage containing the buttermilk-skimmed milk-milk protein concentrate (0.3%) as a product with the preferred quality characteristics (synaeresis, viscosity, sensory properties, and acceptability) was used for further studies regarding the impact on human health. The medical nutrition experiments did not show any statistically significant effect on the biochemical blood parameters of 25 young volunteers after a 21-day period of the consumption of fermented buttermilk beverage with milk protein concentrate, although some of them (e.g. total, low-and high-density cholesterol, triacylglycerol concentrations, etc.) slightly decreased. The anthropometric and body composition, arterial blood pressure, and pulse evaluation indicators of recipients did not change significantly.
The aim of this study was to determine the impact of biologically active inulin-type prebiotic, i... more The aim of this study was to determine the impact of biologically active inulin-type prebiotic, introduced into the yogurt, on the quality characteristics of the product. The influence of inulin-enriched yogurt on health characteristics of patients with metabolic syndrome was determined. Enrichment of yogurt with inulin improved the sensoric properties (flavor and consistency) of the product. Individuals with metabolic syndrome showed significant decrease of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (p<0.05), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (p<0.05) and malondialdehyde (p<0.01) after a 28-days period of consumption of yogurt with inulin. Consumption of inulin-enriched yogurt had a tendency towards lower total cholesterol and had no effect on the triglyceride concentration. No significant effect on glucose concentration was observed. There is a lack of studies on its association with different grades of essential hypertension (EH). Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the association between size of EAT depots and the risk of EH taking into account its grade. Materials and Methods: Non-obese adult patients with various cardiovascular diseases were investigated: 157 of them had essential hypertension and 101 did not. Hypertensive patients were assigned to three groups according to the grade of hypertension. Lietuvoje nėra duomenų apie sportininkų ir sporto trenerių ekologiško maisto vartojimą. Tai nulėm... more Lietuvoje nėra duomenų apie sportininkų ir sporto trenerių ekologiško maisto vartojimą. Tai nulėmė mūsų tyrimo tikslą-ištirti ir apibūdinti Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkų ir sporto trenerių ekologiškų maisto produktų vartojimo įpročius bei juos lemiančius veiksnius. Siekiant įvertinti ekologiškų maisto produktų vartojimą, buvo apklausti 158 Lietuvos didelio meistriškumo sportininkai ir 135 sporto treneriai. Tyrimo rezultatai parodė, kad ekologiško maisto vartotojų skaičius sportininkų ir sporto trenerių grupėse didelis, sudaro atitinkamai 97 ir 88,1 %, tačiau ekologiškų maisto produktų vartojimas yra per retas. Kasdien ekologišką maistą vartoja tik 27,9 % sportininkų ir tik 36,5 % sporto trenerių vyrų. Sportininkai ir sporto treneriai dažniausiai ekologiškų produktų asortimentą formuoja iš vaisių ir uogų, daržovių, kiaušinių, mėsos bei jos produktų, tačiau pastarąjį lemia lytis ir amžius. Informacijos apie ekologinę mitybą trūksta 44,3 % sportininkų ir 54,8 % sporto trenerių. Ekologiškų maisto produktų vartojimas priklauso nuo sportininkų gaunamų pajamų, tačiau jos nėra ekologinę mitybą ribojantis veiksnys. O ekologiško maisto vartojimas tarp sporto trenerių neturi sąsajų su gaunamomis pajamomis. Mūsų tyrimo rezultatai pagrindžia ekologiškų maisto produktų gamybos ir asortimento plėtros poreikį. Formuojant ekologiškų maisto produktų rinką, gamintojams būtų tikslinga orientuotis į didelio meistriškumo sportininkų segmentą bei juos ugdančius sporto trenerius.
