The conditions are deduced for the detector ensuring a constant false alarm probability when the unknown matrix of interference covariances has the Toeplitz structure. The efficiency of this detector is assessed by the simulation method. It is shown that there may exist an acceptable loss with respect to the Neumann-Pearson optimal detector.

The presence of the target decreases the background plus noise power that hence may be different under the null and alternative hypotheses. We use the generalized likelihood ratio (GLR) approach to derive a modified multi-pixel matched subspace detector (MMMSD) that is sensitive to both energy in the target subspace and reduced energy in the orthogonal subspace. The derived algorithm combines the multi-pixel matched subspace detector and multi-pixel background-plus-noise power change detector in a unique scheme. The crucial characteristic of the proposed detector is that prior knowledge of the target size, shape and position is not required. The designed detector is theoretically proved and numerically evaluated. Numerical simulations attest the validity of the theoretic...

The Adaptive Subspace Detector (ASD) and the Modified Adaptive Subspace Detector (MASD) based on the Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) are implemented and compared by video processing varying parameters such as the size of the analysis window, the number of harmonics and processed images. The numerical and experimental tests allow to make recommendations on which detector to use under certain conditions.

The proposed scheme allows us to identify the motor phase affected due to faults related to the stator side, such as current sensors, voltage sensors, and resistance. The results obtained in this work complement a detection system that uses the DQ model of the three-phase induction motor and parity equations focused on the synchronous reference frame, which can detect stator-side faults but cannot locate the affected phase. In addition, considering practical and operational aspects, the residual detection set obtained is simplified to three simple algebraic equations that are easy to implement. The simulation results using the PSIM simulation software and the experimental test allow us to validate the proposed scheme.

The Modified Matched Subspace Detector (MMSD) has been recently proposed for detecting a barely discernible object in an agitated sea surface. MMSD uses the intensity difference between the sea and the object at relatively high frequencies. In the literature the performances of this detector has been evaluated using only a sea model (additive Gaussian background clutter). In this paper we realize a comparison between classical Matched Subspace Detector (MSD) and MMSD using real sea images with synthetic model of the reflections from floating objects. This paper investigates the comparative MSD and MMSD performance, provided that the energy reflected from the object is equal to the energy reflected from the sea. The paper considers the dependence of the detection probability with a fixed probability of false alarm on the difference between the average of reflections from the sea surface and from a floating object at the different MMSD parameters and standard deviations of reflections from the object and the sea surface.

The distributions of two test statistics are derived under these conditions. It has been analytically shown that these detectors can suffer a drastic degradation in performance for background power deviations under alternative hypothesis. We discuss the differences between the performances of these detectors in the case of the structured and unstructured backgrounds with uncorrelated Gaussian noise. The theoretical results are compared with simulated data and good agreement is reported. We present experimental results of small floating object detection on an agitated sea surface using spectral digital video experiments which validate the theoretical results.

In this paper, it is proposed to analyze the values of the normalized cross-correlation coefficients of a given image fragment with higher dimension fragments on sequential video stream frames to identify the distinctive properties of agitated sea surface and floating objects images. The computational experiments were carried out and have shown that the analysis of the results of calculating the frame fragments cross-correlations allows us to estimate the amount of displacement and distortion of a given image fragment. The results of computational experiments demonstrate the presence of differences in the values of the corresponding cross-co...

This situation occurs when the presence of the target triggers a decrease in the background power (subpixel targets). We extend the formulation of the Matched Subspace Detector (MSD) to the case where the background power is only known under the null hypothesis using the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) for the multiple hypotheses case. The obtained multiple hypotheses test is based on the Modified MSD test (MMSD). We discuss the difference between the two detection and recognition systems: based on the MSD and MMSD tests. Numerical simulations attest to the validity of the performance analysis.

Research paper thumbnail of ASE Noise Attenuation for Signal at 1548.4 nm Through a Sagnac Interferometer Using High-Birefringence Fiber Which Is Subjected to Temperature Changes

A Sagnac Interferometer (SI) which uses high-birefringence fiber (Hi-Bi fiber) at 8, 22 and 110 cm is used as band pass filter for attenuating the ASE noise. Temperature variations are made to tune in the filter SI. A test signal containing noise ASE is taken from an erbium-doped optical fiber and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG), therefore the 1548.4 nm signal surrounded for ASE is obtained. This test signal is introduced into the SI filter and the transmitted power of the interferometer is measured, the transmitted signal of SI has periodic variations with maximums and minimums, the SI is tuned in with temperature to bring the maximum transmitted power at the same wavelength of the signal 1548.4 nm. We found experimentally that is possible to attenuate the ASE noise contribution around 1548.4 nm by comparing the input test signal versus the output signal at the output port of SI. In addition, we found the displacement of the transmittance with respect to temperature (Δλ/ΔT) and the period of the transmitted power (Δλ).

The proposed quasi-optimal matched filter is derived based on a weak signal model and unknown ratio of intensity of no-fluctuating background to fluctuating background. Mathematical equations for the computation of the quasioptimal matched filter and its received characteristics have been derived. We have shown that the proposed detector exhibits performance, which is clearly superior to that of the well-known detector in case of presence of an intensive nofluctuating background.
