In this second instalment (Take 2), a methodological approach is put forward within which the various activities required to detail and implement the Strategic Framework must be developed.

Research paper thumbnail of A comprehensive conceptualisation framework for assessing metropolitan peri-urban agriculture

International Journal of Agricultural Resources, Governance and Ecology

Peri-urban agriculture offers multiple benefits for food security, farm viability, environmental ... more Peri-urban agriculture offers multiple benefits for food security, farm viability, environmental stewardship, and landscape and socio-cultural preservation. These are non-commodity outputs insufficiently acknowledged by the free market despite playing an essential role in agricultural development. The double vulnerability of peri-urban agriculture dictated by urban pressure and agricultural systemic changes has led to myopic policy interventions. To address this gap, we propose a comprehensive assessment framework integrating the concepts of multifunctional agriculture, resilience, climate-smart agriculture and alternative food networks to provide a unified evaluation. The framework comprises 21 enabling features across five dimensions derived from the core objectives of the building concepts. The primary purpose of the paper is to address the declining agricultural activity in peri-urban areas and pave a way for policy discussions. The objective is to deliver new insights into how peri-urban agriculture can be re-evaluated, ultimately informing policymakers on a range of issues leading to targeted strategies.

Research paper thumbnail of Using models to inform water policy in a changing climate: comparing the Australian and Uruguayan experiences

Marine and Freshwater Research, 2021

To make matters worse, these events are expected to occur more often as the climate changes. Taking Australia’s experience as an example, minimising the effect of algal blooms involves a range of catchment land use policy and regulatory measures that are underpinned by comprehensive monitoring systems, hydrological modelling platforms and land suitability analysis considering the effects of climate change. The lack of these technological tools means that policies and regulations cannot be implemented effectively. In this paper, we analyse the effects of climate change on Laguna Del Sauce Catchment (Uruguay) and discuss the effects of a possible new land use configuration defined using approaches typically used in Australia. We identify that the likely future of the catchment, according to biophysical modelling, is in conflict with its likely ...

Data arose primarily from diagnoses of the social, technical and economic situation in the region, and interaction activities with farmers in the local groups, institutions and technicians (through interviews and workshops). Results demonstrated it is possible to adapt and implement an EMF, including the following steps: 1. Describing the region or formulating the problem, including values of the actors involved. 2. Discussing boundaries using multiple methodologies and theories (especially some that allow to explore sources of motivation, power, knowledge and legitimacy), and planning for rural sustainable development, considering the principles of “endogeneity”. A...
