Our goal was to alter hydrophobic-hydrophylic characteristics of the tetraphenylporphyrin ring by substitution with propionyl derivatives. As starting materials we used profens known primarily from their widespread use as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, naproxen, ketoprofen, fenoprofen, fluorbiprofen) and 2-phenylpropionic acid (model compound). The new compounds were characterized using spectroscopic and photophysical methods with focus given to measurement of molecules' lifetime in excited triplet state, time-resolved singlet oxygen phosphorescence and measurement of photostability. Fluorescence quantum yields were also determined; data revealed no planarity changes in the porphyrin molecule following substitution with profens.

Research paper thumbnail of Derivatives of Graphene Oxide as Potential Drug Carriers

Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, May 1, 2019

Chemically functionalized graphene oxides could be used as novel drug carriers. Covalent alterati... more Chemically functionalized graphene oxides could be used as novel drug carriers. Covalent alterations of graphene oxides lead to surface changes via formation of chemical bonding while noncovalent ones involve van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding, and-stacking interactions. Covalent modifications appear to be superior as they can yield compounds with desired properties and carriers prepared by other methods are less stable. Synthesis of graphene oxide-iminodiacetic acid and graphene oxide-glycine involves nucleophilic substitution of graphene oxide nanoparticles with iminodiacetic acid or glycine. As the first step, iminodiacetic acid or glycine were transformed into iminodiacetic acid or glycine methyl ester hydrochlorides, respectively, for C-terminus protection. The obtained product, activated in situ, was then used to form amide bonds between graphene oxide and iminodiacetic acid or glycine.

In consequence, water-induced corrosion damage can be a serious problem in industrial systems. Hence, the determination of the corrosion resistance of AISI 1010 steel immersed in sulfolane containing 0 to 6 vol.% water was the principal objective of the study. Evaluation of the corrosion resistance of steel electrodes was performed using a potentiodynamic technique and scanning Kelvin probe microscopy. It was observed that the corrosion products layer that formed on the surface of AISI 1010 steel partially protects it against corrosion in sulfolane with a water concentration in the range from 1 vol.% to 4 vol.%. Interestingly, amounts of water above 4 vol.% cause a breakdown of the corrosion products layer and deteriorate the corrosion resistance of AISI 1010 steel as well. Moreover, the relationship between the fractal dimension, corrosion degree of the steel surface and water concentration in sulfolane was investigated. The fractal dimension was determined using 2D grayscale images of AISI 1010 steel registered through a scanning electron microscope. It was noticed that both the fractal dimension and the corrosion degree rose with the increased water concentration in sulfolane.

Dry digestion procedure for total concentration and wet digestion procedure for infusions were applied under optimized conditions for dissolution of medicinal herbs. Element concentrations in herbs and their infusions were determined by ICP-OES. The accuracy and precision were verified against NCS DC 73349-bush branches and leaves certified reference material. The result of total concentrations of elements in herb leaves shows that all herbs contain most of the elements, except K and P, in the lg/g range, and that elemental concentrations varied widely. Moreover, on the basis of experimental results for the extraction efficiencies, the elements in herb infusions were classified into three specific groups: highly-extractable (>55%) including K; moderately-extractable (20-55%) including Mg, Na, P, B, Zn and Cu and poorly-extractable (<20%) including Al, Fe, Mn, Ba, Ca and Sr. The results of analysis were evaluated statistically using ANOVA one-way and three-way analysis of variance, variance correlation test and Spearman's test.

Research paper thumbnail of Temperature-Related Corrosion Resistance of AISI 1010 Carbon Steel in Sulfolane

Materials, Jun 4, 2020

Sulfolane-induced corrosion can lead to severe impairment in industrial systems. Therefore, deter... more Sulfolane-induced corrosion can lead to severe impairment in industrial systems. Therefore, determination of solvent corrosivity is valid. Under standard conditions, pure sulfolane is considered to be thermally stable and chemically inert, hence non-aggressive towards carbon/stainless steel. Unfortunately, the sulfolane-evoked corrosion of the industrial installations is observed for sulfolane-based systems polluted by small quantities of oxygen, water and some oxidizing agents. Moreover, sulfolane decomposition with formation of corrosive (by-)products can be escalated by some process parameters, e.g., temperature. The main objective of this study was to determine the corrosion resistance of AISI 1010 steel immersed in sulfolane at temperatures ranging from 25 to 230 • C. Evaluation of the corrosion damage was carried out using electrochemical techniques and scanning probe/electron microscopy, respectively. The general corrosion tendency, corrosion rate and surface corrosion degree were taken into account as well. It was noticed that the corrosion rate linearly increases with the enhancement of sulfolane temperature. Moreover, the interfacial reaction of steel with sulfolane resulted in the formation of corrosion product layer, which is a physical barrier between the corrosive environment and steel improving corrosion resistance of the latter. In fact, the increment of the sulfolane temperature caused a gradual breakdown of the protective layer and the increase in the corrosion degree of the investigated steel. Finally, it was found that the corrosion degree doubles approximately every 42 • C.
