Careful analysis of the particular protologues has proved that some recent nomenclatural changes ... more Careful analysis of the particular protologues has proved that some recent nomenclatural changes in Festuca were incorrect: (26) The basionym of F. calva (HACKEL) K. RICHTER is a legitimate combination; hence the author of the epithet-bringing name must appear as 'bracket author'. (27) It is shown that the supposed earlier homonym "F. nigricans"in SCHUR's Enumeratio is just an invalid orthographic error for F. nigrescens LAM.; therefore F. melanopsis FOGGI & al. is a superfluous name for F. nigricans (H ACKEL ) K. RICHTER, the hexaploid Alpic representative of the F. violacea group. (28) The name "F. quadriflora" recently used in several floras for the widespread Alpic species F. pumila CHAIX is a phantom name of what HONCKENY had designated invalidly as "(Festuca] Hall[eri] III. quadrifl[ora]" in addition to "[Festuca] Halleri I." and "[Festuca] Hall[eri] II. septiflora ".

Artemisia santonicum subsp. pannonicum G UTERM . subsp. nova is described to present a valid name... more Artemisia santonicum subsp. pannonicum G UTERM . subsp. nova is described to present a valid name for the diploid race of this species which formerly had been entitled as "subsp. patens" (an invalid designation with reference to an illegitimate name of a different species). Astragalus montanus L. is lectotypified with a B URSER specimen; accordingly Oxytropis montana (L.) DC. (s. str.) is the correct name of what is usually known as O. jacquinii BUNGE since 1961. Agrostis schraderiana BECHERER is the single valid and correct name under that genus contrary to a majority of present floras which use the illegitimate name A. agrostiflora RAUSCHERT for the species also known as Calamagrostis pilosa (P BEAUV.) G REUTER . Careful analysis of the protologues of Ranunculus testiculatus CRANTZ and of Thesium arvense HOR-VATOVSZKY shows that both are superfluous new names for Linnean species; they were wrongly applied however to the taxa which correctly are Ceratocephala orthoceras D...

Morphological similarities with other taxa of Echinops L. recorded in Greece are briefly discussed. Presence of Echinops albidus Boiss. & Spruner is excluded from Italy, E. spinosissimus Turra subsp. neumayeri (Vis.) Kožuharov is confirmed for Albania. Further notes concerning the occurrence of these three species on the Ionian Islands are provided. The names of the three taxa are lectotypified.

Among historical researchers significantly contributing to the floristic and taxonomic exploration was Eugen von Halácsy, a Viennese physician and botanist. He was the first and so far last author of a complete Greek flora, the Conspectus Florae Graecae, and has compiled a seminal herbarium collection of plant specimens originating from Greece. This Herbarium Graecum of approx. 26,000 vouchers, is today held by the Herbarium of the University of Vienna (WU). Investigations for original material in this collection yielded a total of 1,439 (approx. 5.5 %) vouchers. The current type status was checked for the entire material, the vouchers were databased, photographed and geo-referenced, and the data are made publicly available here. These results are presented in an annotated catalogue including 19 lectotypifications, in order to contribute to the still extremely active field o...

Research paper thumbnail of Taxonomy and nomenclature of the polymorphic European high mountain species Androsace vitaliana (L.) Lapeyr. (Primulaceae)

PhytoKeys, 2016

Androsace vitaliana (syn. Vitaliana primuliflora; Primulaceae) has been subject to several taxono... more Androsace vitaliana (syn. Vitaliana primuliflora; Primulaceae) has been subject to several taxonomic treatments, whose conclusions ranged from a single species with numerous infraspecific taxa to several species usually without infraspecific taxa. Here, following molecular investigation, several taxonomic changes are made. A single species with the following infraspecific taxa is recognized: subsp. vitaliana (Pyrenees), subsp. cinerea (south-western Alps), subsp. lepontina (Pennine Alps), subsp. sesleri (south-eastern Alps), subsp. praetutiana (Apennines) and subsp. assoana (Iberian Peninsula excluding the Pyrenees), the last of which is divided into the four allopatrically distributed varieties assoana, centriberica, flosjugorum and nevadensis. Contrary to some previous assertions, all taxa are allopatric and, especially for subspp. vitaliana, cinerea and lepontina, where clear diagnostic characters are lacking, they can best be determined by their geographic origin.

The former Saxifraga stellaris is treated as a member of the genus Micranthes; within M. stellari... more The former Saxifraga stellaris is treated as a member of the genus Micranthes; within M. stellaris the endemic race of the eastern Central Alps should be separated as subsp. prolifera, comb. nov. Generic rearrangement of the Clinopodium affinity has caused the amalgamation of Acinos with Ziziphora; Z. granatensis subsp. alpina, comb. nov., is proposed for the temperate orophyte so far known as Clinopodium alpinum subsp. alpinum (or Acinos alpinus subsp. alpinus). The correct spelling, authorship, and place of valid publication is given for Scrophularia juratensis and Androsace wulfeniana; the latter name, as well as Micranthes stellaris subsp. prolifera, is lectotypified and supplemented by an epitype. The original application of the Linnaean Arenaria multicaulis is again discussed and confirmed by lectotypification; it is advocated to apply this name to the tetraploid cytotype often known as A. moehringioides within the A. ciliata complex. Pilosella tubulata is shown as the correct...
