Accordingly, this study aims to understand the effects of climatic variations on Brazilian agriculture and to understand how the expansion of land dedicated to crop production is influenced by production for export. Accordingly, four hypotheses were created and tested. The descriptive analysis of the data showed that soybean production for exportation is heavily concentrated in the last four months of the year, which indicates the seasonality of its production. The cluster analysis of all the variables (climate and soybean and corn production) shows that there is no relationship between climate variables and grain production variables, since both sets of elements are in separate groups. The non-relationship of climate variables and grain production are also confirmed when the data are analyzed by the principal components model, either by the Kaiser criterion or by the scree plot criterion. In this case, it is possible that crop yields are influenced by irrigation technologies, which reduces the dependence on rainfall patterns, but this data was not considered in this study.

As a result of the emergence of new challenges, mainly related to the management of resources (food, water and energy), the promotion of well-being, security, equality and education, universities are pressured to become responsible for promoting sustainable development in communities. In this sense, this study presents the case of a Brazilian Community University, the University of Southern Santa Catarina (Unisul), which implements numerous practices aimed at the community, carrying out training, education, research, outreach, academic events, consulting on business, legal assistance and medical clinics, as well as promoting sustainability within campuses’ infrastructure, inspiring local communities to incorporate the University’s sustainable values. In addition to the many benefits obtained through actions taken by HEIs and living labs, it is hoped that such actions will cooperate with sustainable development goals (SDGs) to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. With this study, it was concluded that Unisul, besides promoting innovations for sustainable development in each level and sector of the university, operates the learning environments to the students and the communities surrounding its campuses, bringing solutions to the existing local and global challenges.

Because of the innumerable socio-environmental challenges in the current scenario, a sustainable development that finds the necessary changes and advances for communities, industry and the various stakeholders involved is required. In this process of promoting sustainable development, universities stand out for being institutions capable of taking an analytical and questioning look at the directions of the society in which they are inserted and not just helping them to pursue them, serving as a model and living laboratory for the implementation of greener practices in cities. One of the actions that contributes to the consolidation process of a more sustainable university and the development of the green campus is the use of green marketing, understood as a set of all the practices that involve conventional marketing, focused on the search to reduce the n...

In order to minimize the impact of these challenges on our lives, we need data, studies and directives which allow us to create resilience and adapting strategies over time. However essential those actions may be, we constantly fail in preventing risks. In this sense, the present critical review aims to discuss the impacts originated in the new (COVID-19) pandemic and, simultaneously, the changes caused by this event within the international scenario.

Accordingly, this paper aims to understand how sustainable campuses, as living labs, promote innovations for sustainable development through the case of a Brazilian Community University. To accomplish this objective, this study presents a review of literature on sustainable development at universities, followed by the analysis of the case of a Brazilian Community University, the University of Southern Santa Catarina (Unisul). For the data collection, we performed semi structured qualitative interviews with 15 faculty members of Unisul, aligned with the review of the university’s institutional documents and the categories mapped in the literature. The implementation of sustainable campuses as living labs at HEIs creates a propitious environment for innovation and practical learning, motivating both internal and external communities, leading society towards sustainable development. Thus, as a community university, Unisul promotes several practices to engage the community through education, capacity building, research, outreach, academic events, consulting on business, architectural assistance and medical consulting to the community, legal assistance, medical clinics, also promoting sustainability in campuses’ infrastructure, inspiring the local communities to incorporate the university’s sustainable values.

They are home to capable people providing social and technological advancements. Cities are self-organizing, adaptive and constantly evolving. Beyond playing an important role in the maximization of social and economic benefits of new ideas, cities are simultaneously extremely sensitive to human actions. This article aims to analyze the main indicators for the construction of a sustainable city through a multi-criteria evaluation. Through this analysis, and with the opinion of experts, this article will demonstrate the importance of strategic action for the promotion of a sustainable city.

Managing, conserving and maximizing the potential of each component is a major global concern considering the many challenges to be faced in the 21st century. The aim of this study was to identify, in the literature, recommendations for public policy, research and development, and practices for the WEF Nexus, aimed at promoting sustainable development considering stochastic and risk elements. In this regard, this paper presents a literature review of the contribution scientific studies have made toward better understanding the importance of the WEF Nexus in the context of sustainable development. Research indicates that the WEF Nexus cannot be discussed as independent sectors, highlighting the need for integrated policies and inter-sectoral and international cooperation to promote sustainable development. Therefore, the effective management of the WEF Nexus requires science-based data using risk and stochastic elements to assist policy and decision-making. Thus, in a situation of rapid global changes, decision-making processes for this Nexus must be assisted by multidisciplinary, multi-stakeholder and cross-sectoral approaches, aimed at avoiding the unintended effects of a single sector approach (e.g., energy policies stimulating hydroelectricity production need to consider factors affecting conservation and food production). With regard to the effects of climate change on the WEF Nexus, risk and stochastic elements must be considered when developing a science-based model for the sustainable management of WEF resources.

The interconnections between them emerge as new important aspects in the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda, especially in a context of population growth and increasing pressure on resources. As a consequence of Brazil's relevance in worldwide food production, this country has established several food policies in the last two decades, resulting in pressure on water and energy resources. Therefore, this article analyzes Brazilian food policies and its interconnections, overlaps and potential clashes with water and energy resources, as well as its alignment to sustainable development goals. In addition, the words with higher incidence in policies were analyzed in order to identify patterns and trends in food production management. As a result, through an analysis and review of seventeen Brazilian policies, programs and projects for food within a perspective of sustainability, this article innovatively proposed a Balanced Scorecard in the water, energy and food Nexus approach. This assessment can provide a directional suggestion for future development policies.

The several changes happening in environmental, social, economic, technological and geopolitical ... more The several changes happening in environmental, social, economic, technological and geopolitical spheres of our society result in countless risks, challenges and opportunities for human development. The global population crosses 7.7 billion with the loss of biodiversity, increasing pressure on food, water, and energy resources. The migration of people from rural to urban in large scale is a matter of concern; as the global urban population will almost reach 68% by 2050, approximately 6 billion. A very high concentration of people living in urban areas and growth projection pose a serious challenge for large cities for vulnerability. Amongst the several challenges, food security will be a serious issue for the future of cities. In this context, the Fourth Industrial Revolution and movement towards creating Smart Cities have to provide solutions and opportunities to deal with those challenges. In this opinion paper, we seek to discuss the future of cities, with a holistic vision of several actions to deal with food security challenges in urban centers.

Ensuring food security is one of the main challenges of the 21st century in developing countries.... more Ensuring food security is one of the main challenges of the 21st century in developing countries. The aim of this study is to analyze how public policies contribute to the strengthening of family farming in order to increase the food security. The study encompasses a literature review of the relations between public policies, family farming and food security and relates them with a review of the main policy framework in Brazil. The results show that the Brazilian policy framework in terms of strategies to strengthen food security is intrinsically focused on family farming and, in fact, these policies contribute to enhancing food security. Thus, family farming, in conjunction with large-scale farming, is crucial to Brazilian and global food security. Even though there are some scientific publications on food security and official reports on the subjects in Brazil, little has been written about family farming as a strategy for public policies to enhance food security in Brazil. Therefore, this paper can potentially contribute to the literature on good governance in terms of agriculture and food security policies by presenting the well succeeded case of Brazil since the early 2000s.

In this analysis, the authors reveal that water, energy, and food are interdependent and essential resources demanding sustainable, integrated and intelligent management. These vital resources are susceptible to many global risks which are maximized by extreme weather events, mass involuntary human migrations, and other hazards that predominantly endanger the vulnerable communities of less developed countries. In conclusion, policies carried out by the international community, decision-makers, civil society, and the private sector, must align to target and mitigate global risks, specifically, water, energy and food security.
