Building computational models that emulate human behavior on complex tasks is an ambitious undertaking, as they must include perception and motor behavior as well as problem-solving, learning and large amounts of knowledge. This project demonstrates that building a complex model of perception, cognition and motor behavior can be accomplished by re-using architectures and models of component capabilities built for other tasks. It also demonstrates how emergent properties of such a complex model can reveal important insights for cognitive science.

One way to alleviate this problem is to use machine learning techniques. We built a classifier based on decision trees that reproduces the classifying process used by two humans on a sample of data and that learns how to classify unseen data. The automatic classifier proved to be more accurate, more constant and much faster than classification by hand. Our customer-service agents use natural language to interact with customers, enabling customers to state their intentions directly instead of searching for the places on the Web site that may address their concern. We use planning methods to search systematically for the solution to the customer's problem, ensuring that a resolution satisfactory for both the customer and the company is found, if one exists. Our agents converse with customers, guaranteeing that needed information is acquired from customers and that relevant information is provided to them in order for both parties to make the right decision. The net effect is a more frictionless interaction process that improves the customer experience and makes businesses more competitive on the service front.

We present here the Cellular Abstract Machine (CAM), a tool for building such hybrid systems, taking the form of heterogeneous networks of cooperating agents (here called cells). Several AI applications have been written using the CAM, including a
