Storytelling is one of the oldest human activities for sharing information, entertainment, etc., ... more Storytelling is one of the oldest human activities for sharing information, entertainment, etc., and it is not wrong to say that myths were the most common form of storytelling through all ages in all cultures. Thanks to the researchers starting with Adolf Bastian and followed by Carl Gustav Jung and Joseph Campbell we now know that there is a common structure in myths regardless the cultural environment they are told in. Among the monomyths of Jung maybe the most interesting one is the hero and, as Campbell showed in “The Hero with a Thousand Faces”, his journey. Crucially, the hero’s journey is not only a spatial journey but also a temporal one. The aim of this paper is to show that the temporal journey of the hero in the film series Star Wars, Episode IV-VI, can be organized into a fractal-lattice structure. In recent years, solutions based on machine-tomachine (M2M) communications have started to suppor... more In recent years, solutions based on machine-tomachine (M2M) communications have started to support us in many areas of our life and work. However, the amount of data collected by M2M has increased tremendously and surpassed our expectations. This makes it necessary to investigate data mining methodologies and machine learning techniques in order to efficiently utilize large amounts of data gathered by M2M devices. In this paper, we first review existing data mining and machinelearning techniques specifically designed and proposed for M2M networks. Then, we discuss Big Data concept, investigate Big Data analysis techniques, and the importance of Big Data for M2M networks. Finally, we investigate research challenges and open research issues in M2M to provide an insight into future research opportunities.

There are various attempts to formalize this database. This paper presents a partial formalization of FrameNet in situation theory. This mathematical theory of information may provide a fruitful basis for making FrameNet accessible to other fields such as natural language processing, computational linguistics and informational retrieval.

On the one hand, it is argued that thematic roles can be organized into three hierarchical fields: the locative field, the figural field, and the psychological field. On the other hand, the paper offers insights into how to link FrameNet to these fields. Three frames are proposed to carry out such a linking function: Intentionally_affect, Transitive_action, and Mental_activity. It is suggested that constituents of natural language sentences can be linked to the relevant parts of FrameNet via the mediation of these frames and the thematic fields.

From a general point of view, the defined reality models by using a formal language are called fo... more From a general point of view, the defined reality models by using a formal language are called formal ontology. These general purposeful models can be also used in the special fields of application. Because ontologies are large-scale by their nature, they have the potential of hosting errors and deficiencies in case they are generated by human labor. Besides, an ontology formed such a way will be difficult to be adapted to a application specific. In this study, an application of a computerized formal ontology formation saved from probable problems which are likely to arise using human labor will be introduced. In the application, semantic analysis of Turkish has been targetted as a special application field using corpus-based marking method in the framework of formal concept analysis. Beside the applications of these kinds of natural language processing formal ontologies are used considerably in the field of education as they present the information in the way of semantic structures clearly and meaningfully. The most important reasons of this are the use of the information technologies such as expansion of constructivist approach and the concept maps used for educational reasons.

During the last couple of decades the number of documents in digital form has grown tremendously ... more During the last couple of decades the number of documents in digital form has grown tremendously in size. Consequently, being able to automatically organise and classify documents is highly important. The target of research in classification is to partition unstructured sets of documents into groups that give a description of the contents of the documents. Since the task is to assign documents to one or more classes or categories, it can be realised either manually or automatically, based on a set of algorithms. This paper presents a smart information and document analyser called ABBA. ABBA uses machine learning and natural processing techniques to provide a number of useful functions including correcting mistyped words in documents, separating intermingled documents, classifying documents into designated groups, extracting information from documents, and easing document access, document control, management and storage by processing even unstructured documents. In addition to presenting the details of ABBA, this paper also gives information about major solution areas and sectors in which ABBA can be used.

Several views of specificity have been characterized on the basis of the contrast between accusat... more Several views of specificity have been characterized on the basis of the contrast between accusative-case-marked and non-case-marked direct objects in Turkish. This article claims that the specificity status of the referent of an NP, in one manner or other, cannot be the ultimate criterion for this NP to carry or not to carry case morphology. Instead, it is argued that the determining factor in case marking alternations in Turkish is the informational status of the NP in the partitioning of the semantic material of the sentence between described and resource situations: if its descriptive content is not part of what characterizes the situation described by the sentence, the NP bears case morphology; otherwise, it appears without case morphology.

The theoretical basis of the study rests on the claim that effective and efficient human robot interaction requires linguistic and ontological agreement. A further claim is that the required ontology is implicitly present in the lexical and grammatical structure of natural language. The paper offers some NLP techniques to uncover (fragments of) the ontology hidden in natural language and to generate semantic representations of natural language sentences using that ontology. The paper also presents the implementation details of an NLP module capable of parsing English and Turkish along with an overview of the architecture of a robotic interface that makes use of this module for expressing the spatial motions of objects observed by a robot

Considering its importance for humans, it must be periodically analyzed to ensure its quality. In this study, a wireless water quality network is deployed to collect water quality parameters periodically and an artificial neural network-based estimation method is proposed to estimate groundwater quality. Estimating groundwater quality enables the authorities to take immediate actions for ensuring water quality. Compared to traditional water quality analysis methods, the proposed method has the advantage of letting the authorities know the quality of their water resources beforehand. A set of simulation studies given in this paper proves the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method.

This paper presents a three-layered morpho-phonological analyzer for Turkish. These layers corres... more This paper presents a three-layered morpho-phonological analyzer for Turkish. These layers correspond to the phonetic, phonological and morphological levels of the language. The layered approach is based on the recognition of the autonomy of the levels of a language. Three types of automata are designed and implemented to carry out the autonomous operations: an automaton without initial and final states for analyzing phonetic dependencies, an acylcic automaton for performing phonological operations and a cyclic automaton for morphological operations. Each automaton is responsible for combining linguistic units relevant to the level implemented into larger fragments. However, in addition to this axis of combination the analyzer also implements an axis of abstraction. Notice that the linguistic levels are argued to be autonomous not entirely independent. The vertical interaction among the levels is carried out by an automaton providing the one higher up with properly abstracted information.

HTML'in veriyi göstermedeki yetersizlikleri nedeniyle XML (Extensible Markup Language) işaretleme dili İnternet dünyasındaki yerini almaya başlamıştır. XML ile birlikte Web Servisleri kavramı doğmuştur. XML ile birlikte Web Servisleri kavramı doğmuştur. Bu çalışmanın amacı İnternet üzerinde bilginin paylaşımında kullanılabilecek HTML, XML ve Web Servislerinin İnternet sunucularına etkisini incelemektir. Bu etki incelenirken dilbilim uygulamalarında için kullandığımız İnternet tabanlı sözlük uygulamaları ve geliştirdiğimiz sözlük uygulamasından yararlanılacaktır.
