This paper intends to investigate the history of the Great Seljuk Empire (1037-1194 CE), the events that led to its rise and decline in light of the cyclical theory, especially those propounded by two sociologists: Ibn Khaldūn and Vilfredo Pareto. The former is a medieval thinker while the latter a contemporary. In doing so, the paper aims to make a comparison between Ibn Khaldūn and Vilfredo Pareto. The principles of thematic content analysis are followed on the translated works of the authors to achieve the objective. The rise of the Seljuks is understood with the concept of ‘aṣabīyah in the nomadic pastoral society (‘umrān badawī) and its disappearance in the sedentary society (‘umrān ḥaḍarī). Similarly, the struggle of power within the Seljuk Empire is deconstructed with the understanding of the concepts of ‘lions’ and ‘foxes’ as propounded by Vilfred...

A large number of studies have been undertaken in patients with traumatic brain injury to asses the efficacy of hypothermia for reduction of intracranial hypertension. Hypothermia has also been shown to reduce mortality and increase functional outcome if used for longer duration in patients with severe traumatic brain injury. Due to the risk of rebound cerebral edema during re-warming, medical complications and other factors, hypothermia has not been widely utilized for other neurologic catastrophes. To determine the safety and feasibility of hypothermia to treat intracranial hypertension in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), we performed this study. Methods Retrospective analysis was performed on 11 consecutive patients with poor grade (Hunt and Hess IV and V) SAH who had high intracranial pressure that was either non responsive or poorly resp...

However, its role in conjunction with full dose intravenous alteplase in neurointerventional procedures needs to be determined. We report the results of an open-label prospective registry to evaluate the safety (in terms of avoiding hemorrhagic complications) and effectiveness (in terms of recannalization rates and clinical improvement) of administering eptifibatide. Method: Patients data was prospectively maintained at a University-affiliated community hospital from January 2010 to June 2011. Consecutive patients with moderate to severe stroke who received intravenous Alteplase and failed to improve were studied. Femoral artery access was established and site of cerebral occlusion crossed with microcat...

The methodology adopted by Ali Shari’ati in his study of religion was different from two classical sociologists. The objective of this paper is to highlight how Ali Shari’ati differed in his sociology of religion from sociologists, such as Emile Durkheim and Max Weber. Through thematic content analysis, the works of the authors were reviewed to understand their methodology. The findings of this paper outline the methodology adopted by Ali Shari’ati, which was different, both, in its approach and the tools used to analyze religion. Though there was a shift in methodology when compared to classical sociologists, this paper agrees that the methodology of Ali Shari’ati was the best suited to study a deeply religious Asian society such as Iran.

Tertiary education, in particular, contributes to the growth of knowledge and advances skills, which helps in the development of a country. This paper aims to look at the research and technological output at the tertiary level in Saudi Arabia and Iran. Background: Saudi Arabia and Iran have an aspiration for leadership in the Islamic world and have been fighting for regional domination. Providing an overview of their tertiary education in these countries could be used to understand where the countries stand in their social and economic aspirations, especially when their economies move from oil to knowledge-based. Methodology: To achieve the objective of the study, qualitative thematic analysis was done on secondary data extracted from the official websites of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the World Bank and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Contribution: The dat...

In particular conditions water solidi®es or reacts chemically with hydrocarbons, forming hydrates. Such crystalline substances may cause obstruction of the lines and damage the equipment of the relevant facilities. A procedure for predicting the performance of drying a pipeline using dehumidi®ed air with low dew point is described in this paper. The mathematical model estimates the time required for the complete removal of moisture in the pipeline for the given operating conditions with simpli®ed assumptions. The governing equations are solved analytically as well as numerically and the results are brie¯y discussed in the paper.
