In this study, we aim to discover the most relevant variables for predicting HIV testing uptake among substance users in substance use disorder treatment programs by applying random forest (RF), a robust multivariate statistical learning method. We also provide a descriptive introduction to this method for those who are unfamiliar with it. We used data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network HIV testing and counseling study (CTN-0032). A total of 1281 HIV-negative or status unknown participants from 12 US community-based substance use disorder treatment programs were included and were randomized into three HIV testing and counseling treatment groups. The a priori primary outcome was self-reported receipt of HIV test results. Classification accuracy of RF was compared to logistic regression, a standard statistical approach for binary outcomes. Variable importance measures for the RF model were used to select the most relevant variables. RF based models produced much higher classification accuracy than those based on logistic regression. Treatment group is the most important predictor among all covariates, with a variable importance index of 12.9%. RF variable importance revealed that several types of condomless sex behaviors, condom use self-efficacy and attitudes towards condom use, and level of depression are the most important predictors of receipt of HIV testing results. There is a nonlinear negative relationship between count of condomless sex acts and the receipt of HIV testing. In conclusion, RF seems promising in discovering important factors related to HIV testing uptake among large numbers of predictors and should be encouraged in future HIV prevention and treatment research and intervention program evaluations.

Yet, significant numbers of substance users are not routinely tested, despite their high risk status. Objective: We examined changes in readiness for HIV testing in a randomized trial of HIV testing strategies. Methods: A total of 1281 participants from 12 US community-based substance use disorder treatment programs were included in this planned secondary analysis of data from CTN-0032, a trial conducted within the National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network. There were three study arms: (1) referral for off-site HIV testing, (2) HIV risk-reduction counseling with on-site rapid HIV testing, and (3) verbal information about testing with on-site rapid HIV testing. Results: Participants in both on site testing arms reported significantly higher readiness for HIV testing (30.3% vs 56.3% vs 54.8%), higher HIV test completion (47.6% vs 88.9% vs 89.6%) and a higher proportion of receiving HIV test results (90.1% vs 99.2% vs 99.4%) post-intervention than the off-site referral arm. A significant change in readiness to test across study arms was also reported for those who completed the HIV test (χ2=18.88, p=0.0008) and who received their results (χ2=20.09, p=0.0005). There was no difference in these outcomes between the information only or counseling arms, both of which provided on-site rapid HIV testing. Conclusions: On-site rapid HIV testing increases participant’s readiness for future testing. Increased availability of on-site rapid HIV testing may increase the likelihood of repeated HIV testing in substance users.

The Copine V (CPNE5) gene is involved in Ca(2+) binding and may play an important role in the development of the central nervous system. This study tested the genetic associations of 77 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the CPNE5 gene with alcohol dependence (AD) and obesity using a Caucasian sample - The Study of Addiction - Genetics and Environment (SAGE) sample (1066 AD cases and 1278 non-AD controls, 422 obese cases and 1395 non-obese controls). The Marshfield sample (1442 obese cases and 2122 non-obese controls) was used for replication of obesity. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed using the PLINK software. In the SAGE sample, we identified 10 SNPs associated with AD and 17 SNPs associated with obesity (p < 0.05). Interestingly, 6 SNPs (rs9986517, rs9470387, rs3213534, rs10456444, rs3752482, and rs9470386) were associated with both AD (OR = 0.77, 0.77, 0.83, 0.8...

Recognition and integration of each of these modalities is important to create an accurate record of a meeting. However, each of these modalities presents recognition difficulties. Speech recognition must be speaker and domain independent, have low word error rates, and be close to real time to be useful. Gesture and handwriting recognition must be writer independent and support a wide variety of writing styles. Person identification has difficulty with segmentation in a crowded room. Furthermore, in order to produce the record automatically, we have to solve the assignment problem (who is saying what), which involves people identification and speech recognition. This paper will examine a multimodal meeting room system under development at Carnegie Mellon University that enables us to track, capture and integrate the important aspects of a meeting from people identification to meeting transcription. Once a multimedia meeting record is created, it can be archived for later retrieval.

Data of SARS cases reported from the Beijing Municipal Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (BCDC) were collected and analyzed by descriptive epidemiology. In the early epidemic period, the intervals between the disease onset and the hospital admission seemed irregular, so was the intervals between the hospital admission and the notification. After the middle ten days of April, the intervals turned out to be more regular, and the disordered situation in terms of the hospital admission and the case notification was gradually brought under control. Public health interventions against SARS has revealed positive impacts on SARS control program in Beijing. The timing and sensitivity of epidemic information reporting systems has been greatly improved in Beijing as a result of successful fight against this disease.

The problem is studied from the perspective of competitive analysis. The competitive ratio of an online strategy relative to a given input instance is the ratio of the strategy's performance to the offline optimal. Under the online algorithm approach, we formulate two models and dprice -threat-based algorithm is established. Following that, numerical examples concerning competitive analysis for the algorithms are given. Finally, some future research directions are pointed out. !

Associations of SA with alcohol consumption and some chronic diseases have been inconsistent. This study aimed to estimate prevalence of SA and examine its associations with potential factors including alcohol consumption, asthma, diabetes, and hypertension. This was a cross-sectional study on 823 adults with SA and 38,638 controls from the 2011 National Survey on Drug Use and Health Data. Weighted univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to examine the associations of SA with the potential factors. The prevalence of SA was higher in males (4.01%) than in females (2.61%), while the prevalence increased with age (0.86%, 3.50%, and 4.47% for age groups of 18-25, 26-64, and ≥ 65, respectively). Univariate analysis revealed that all factors except for income and education were associated with SA (P < 0.05). In multivariable analyses, participants who were current and past alcohol consumers had signific...

First, we report on a review of fashion-related literatures outside of HCI, mostly in sociocultural studies, business and marketing research. Within HCI, we use Blevis' five sustainable interaction design principles as a frame to present new directions that arise from thinking about fashion in relation to sustainability. In order to construct a clear basis for fashion thinking within the domain of HCI, we postulate six fashion concepts that owe to literatures outside of HCI. For each fashion concept, we derive a fashion thinking issue, provide design examples, and propose actionable design principles, to illustrate the instrumental value that each fashion concept offers to sustainable HCI. We conclude simply by identifying future research directions to which we and others may contribute.
