Internationalization of Two Faculty‐Based Journals at UM: the case of MJCS and MJLIS

The dimensions include such issues as the documented objectives of the journal, the governance of the editorial and reviewing board, the process of publishing, the delivery and distribution of published issues both print or electronic and the indexation status. The journals in this context refer to the Malaysian Journal of Library & Information Science and Malaysian Journal of Computer Science, both published by the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, University of Malaya. These two journals are the first faculty based Malaysian journals that are being currently indexed by the ISI Social Science Citation Index and the Science Citation Index as well as by Scopus since their 2007 issues. This paper traces the beginnings of both journals, especially in their attempts to make themselves visible nationally and international and steps taken to ensure that the journals assimilate the basic attributes needed to gain international standard. The issues that come with this status will also be highlighted.

The results of a user study, conducted using different sets of questionnaire for both types of schools indicated that students in general, borrowed books from the library by browsing the shelves. Students seldom used the catalogue card for searching and only a small percentage reported that they were able to find the books successfully using the catalogue card. Based on the findings, a conceptual model of the prototype automated catalogue was developed - Virtual Library for use in primary schools, and ELIS for secondary schools. Both systems are divided into two main modules, the Administrator and the User module. User acceptance test showed that the majority of students found the systems user friendly. Students were also successful in the search tasks given. A high majority described the graphical user interface to be attractive and simple. This indicates the feasibili...

The sample comprises of 150 Malaysian journal editors who responded to a questionnaire distributed at a journal editor’s conference. Analysis was based on 82 usable responses. Findings show that journal editors perceive a certain degree of influence from peer network but perceive a less degree of influence from change agents. Both peer network and change agents are not significant contributors to adoption rate of e-journals, however all the three organization variables: journal’s age, publication size and editorial experience are significant contributors. We discuss the results and implication of the findings.

Using the Diffusion of Innovation Concept to Explain the Factors That Contribute to the Adoption Rate of E-journal Publishing

Drawing upon the theory of innovation diffusion, the study examines the role of awareness, three organization variables (publication size, age of the journal, and experience of editors), and attributes of e-journals (relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability and observability) as influences to the rate of e-journal publishing adoption. Findings show that only two attributes—complexity and trialability—emerge as significant contributors to e-journal adoption rates, and all three organization variables—journal's age, publication size, and editorial experience—are significant. Collectively, these five significant variables explained 57.8% of the variance in adoption rate. We discuss the results and implication of the findings with respect to the wider context of e-journal publishing.

The study also observes the students attitude towards reading, their use of the school library and knowledge of how the school library are organised for locating needed materials. The problems students face in' obtaining reading materials is also identified. The study uses a structured questionnaire as the survey instrument. The findings generally indicate that the students read regularly outside school hours. This reading however, is mainly confined to textbooks and mainly carried out for the purpose of acquiring knowledge or for study. Consequently, the library is used mainly to study or do homework rather than to borrow items to read at leisure. Most students indicate positive attitude towards the library for providing them with the facility to carry out their study or meet friends, but hardly use the services the library provides. Most express dissatisfaction with their library's collection.

The following quantitative measures are used to study 272 articles published in Malaysian Journal of Computer Science, (1) the article productivity of the journal from 1985 to 2007, (2) the observed and expected authorship productivity tested using Lotka's Law of author productivity, identification and listing of core authors; (3) the authorship, co-authorship pattern by authors' country of origin and institutional affiliations; (4) the subject areas of research; (5) the citation analysis of resources referenced as well as the age and half-life of citations; the journals referenced and tested for zonal distribution using Bradford's law of journal scattering; the extent of web citations; and (6) the citations received by articles published in MJCS and impact factor of the journal based on information obtained from Google Scholar, the level of author and journal self-citation.

In Malaysia, as in many other nations, publication in ISI-ranked journals is a crucial factor. This focus is causing a strain on national journals that suffer from a lack of content, institutional support, and national recognition. This paper presents data about Malaysian journal publishing and the study questioned editors in chief of Malaysian journals to obtain opinions of the problems they encounter and possible solutions. Data were collected through interviews. The participants in the study highlighted four main issues that resulted in a weak publishing environment: institutional reputation building (academic reputation), researcher prestige/image building, lack of focus on local journal issues by legislators, and a weak publishing culture. The article concludes that the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education should pay attention to national initiatives in countries such as India and Australia that recognize national journals and reward researchers for publishing in them.

Zainab Department of Information Science, Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology, This study concentrates on the general web-based information seeking behaviour of secondary school students and their use of websites, in particular, finding if Secondary Three students use Web resources for their information needs in conducting school projects and assignments. The survey aimed to discover the level of Internet searching ability and problems encountered. It was an effort of an initial fact-finding process to investigate students’ readiness and reception to usage of digital libraries. As confident and savvy Internet users, the sample surveyed value access to accurate, up-to-date information accessed in the shortest time possible. They are aware of the shortcomings of information available from the Web and of their needs for assistance in conceptualizing search terms.

The data was collected from two sources. A selfadministered questionnaire was used to obtain demographic data, their opinion on the adequacy of the computer facilities made available for them and the types of use they made of the computers for research purposes. Data on the total number and type of publications authored was obtained from the questionnaire, and the annual reports of academic staff publications for the years 1990 to1995. The results revealed that the majority of both academic engineers and scientists made frequent use of computers for research. However, the scientists indicated a more varied use than the engineers. Both groups reported frequent use of computers for word processing (83% to 90%), sending or receiving e-mails (66% to 71%) and searching for information in the Internet (41% to 51%). Computers are least used for keeping personal bibliographical indexes (8% to 11%). For the academic scientists, the total publication productivity is correlated (≤0.01) to using computers for creating databases, word processing, slide presentations, sending or receiving emails, obtaining information from the Internet and maintaining personal bibliographical indexes. For the academic engineers the total publication output is not correlated with frequent use of computers for research, although the mean score for each type of computer use is high. The frequency of computer use is also related to such factors as respondent's department, age, work experience and academic rank.
