This study is to interpret the teaching materials, approaches and methods used in the plus curric... more This study is to interpret the teaching materials, approaches and methods used in the plus curriculum in the teaching English as a compulsory subject in the Madrasah Aliyah Darul Ulum Banda Aceh. An ethnography method was purposefully used where four participants were involved for an in-depth interview and classroom observation. The result revealed that the approaches were the employed namely scientific and communicative approach. The method instantly becomes priority were lecture method, demonstration, discussion, simulation, grammar-translation method, direct method, debate, and role play. Whereas the teaching material was sourced from the technical school guiding book, relevant technical books, magazines, visual-based teaching, audiovisual based and multimedia-based learning sources. Therefore, this is one of the evidence that the successful using of teaching material, approaches, and method under the plus curriculum can mediate the Madrasah Aliyah students' English learning outcomes. This may put into account due to the specific educational and cultural issue and practices in those private Madrasah Aliyah. Moreover, it can be typically recommended to other schools in Banda Aceh to apply such an innovative and combination curriculum contents; local school and national curriculum instruction. Further ethnographic research is needed to investigate how teachers and principals prepare or determine teaching materials and learning model prior to the learning process conducted.

The purpose of this paper is to find out and analyze the meaning of semiotics and cultural values... more The purpose of this paper is to find out and analyze the meaning of semiotics and cultural values at digitalbased Javanese traditional wedding receptions (mass media). The type of research used in this study is the type of interpretive qualitative research, and in research using semiotic research methods, namely analytical methods to study the signs and meanings that exist in the object under study are based on facts in the field regarding the traditional Javanese wedding procession in Kebumen. Data is collected through textbooks, references that have something to do with this writing and documentation. Based on the results of the discussion, it is known that the Javanese traditional wedding procession in Kebumen has a very deep meaning for both the bride and the family. In this procession, it can be seen that men are more dominant in the household than women, and there is a myth as Roland Barthes said that myth exists but not necessarily the truth, and in this meeting procession the myth of Roland Barthes works that according to public belief Java, after carrying out this Javanese traditional wedding procession the two bride's households will get along harmoniously. But at this time for ordinary people, not a few who do not use this procession, because the creator of the event does not want to bother with all the requirements that exist to carry out this procession. However, there are still many people who advocate for traditional Javanese wedding receptions and not abandoning traditions that should be preserved, especially for people outside Java.

This present study aims at investigating the patterns used in classroom interaction by English lower secondary teachers. Using qualitative approach, this study was carried out in eight lower secondary schools (SMP) in Jakarta. Moreover, twenty English language experienced teachers with three to thirty-six years of teaching experiences were recruited as participants. Interviews, classroom observations/recording and focus-group discussion were instruments to collect data. For analyzing the data, qualitative data analysis was selected in developing categories and sub-categories of the data. The findings showed that the teachers apply at least three identified interactional patterns in EFL classroom in which modify the IRF structure. The research method used was descriptive qualitative with content analysis techniques. The research data were 78 sentences written by BIPA students at Bina Nusantara University academic year 2020/2021. The results show that BIPA students’ sentences have linguistic creativity in the form of the morphological, syntactic, and semantic levels sentences. At the morphological level, the process of linguistic creativity in words is carried out by (1) inserting foreign terms into sentences, (2) using non-standard words, and (3) abbreviating words. While in phrases, linguistic creativity is done by (1) reversing the structure of the phrase, (2) forming nominal phrases with less common word pairs, and (3) forming nominal phrases by incorporating elements of student culture. Therefore, it is interesting to academically explore their motivations for learning several languages. This research is novel compared to previous studies because scant extant research exists of polyglots’ motivation for learning several languages. To this end, researchers collected data from semi structured interviews obtained from five informants. The method that we used was a descriptive case study. Findings showed that the polyglots’ motivation for learning multiple foreign languages were (a) pleasure, (b) social intercourse, (c) professional purposes, and (d) academic purposes. Mostly, the previous research revealed that motivation for people learning foreign languages were for social interaction, professional reasons, and academic purposes. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of contextual teaching and learning approach of th... more The aim of this study is to examine the effect of contextual teaching and learning approach of the Arabic essay writing skills students of Education Arabic Department Faculty of Language and Arts State University of Jakarta. The research was conducted during the second semester in the 2015/2016 academic year starting from February up June in 2016. The study design used Elliot's procedure, which comprised seven phases, namely: (a) identifying the initial ideas, (b) finding and analyzing the facts, (c) general planning, (d) Implementing, (e) observing, (f) evaluating, and (g) revising. The data were taken by observation, interview, daily note, and test. The results of the study found that the mean of the pre-test was 65,30, the average score results of the test at the first cycle were 73,25, the average score of the test at the second cycle was 77,40, and the average score of the test at third cycle was 84.1. It concluded that the contextual teaching and learning approach could improve the student's skill in Arabic essay writing.

The research finding shows that Kalam III material based CLIL using Qur'an, Hadits, Fiqih and Tsaqofah Islamiah is an effective model for improving students' Arabic ability. The research was conducted through descriptive analysis. The analysis of data is the impact of the implementation of the model for the Introduction to linguistics course. Data of the study were collected through observation, questionnaires, and tests. The result of the study shows that using the model can provide the learners' comprehension in learning linguistics concepts. Further, that model has emerged as one of the alternative modes of instruction delivery in the concept of linguistics. This research finding can be used to review current online learning model trends and to explore potential research directions.

The culture of discussion is the culture of Minangkabau society to get an agreement. It is because the decision made will give effect to other family members. Second is negotiation that always used in direct utterance in form of declarative utterance. Third is negotiation that always used in indirect utterance in form of declarative and imperative utterance. Indirect utterance was the utterance that mostly used. This is related with the culture of Minangkabau society that has intrinsic meaning.

The results show that: (1) students’ writing skill using Discovery Learning model is higher than the ones use Guided Learning model; (2) There is an interaction effect between the teaching model and reasoning ability toward writing skill, and (3) students’ writing skill with high reasoning ability and using Discovery Learning model is higher than the students using Guided Learning model, and (4) the level of students’ writing skill with low reasoning ability and using Discovery Learning model is less than the ones use Guided Learning.

Based on interviews carried out to get initial data on the students' speaking skills, it was shown that the students had problems in speaking due to inadequate knowledge of the language which in turn made the students felt unconfident to speak. The students were not familiar with various speaking activities facilitating them to speak. They read the text to convey ideas and a lack of strategies when speaking. To help the students, task-based learning was adapted through action research in one-semester courses. Fifteen students in the third semester participated in this study. The data were taken from the results of the pre-test to post-test, interview, and observation. This study involves qualitative method comprehending ethnographic method by Spradley model. This study lasted from November 2015 to June 2016. The data was obtained from participatory observation, interview, documentary analysis, and audiovisual material. This study proves that: (1). the learning objective is considered by the level of Muhâdatsahthat is divided into level 1, level 2, and level 3. (2). Curriculum applies on KKNI basis (National Education Quality Standard). And the syllabus applies Functional Syllabus. (3). Scenario of the learning material covers themes on conversation, vocabulary, the maqala concerning to the most recent development and attractive topic on argumentative debate relating to educational issues. (4). The method involves Eclectic Method that organises Grammar-Translation method, Direct Method, Audio-Lingual Method, and Debating Method. (5). The media of learning is equipped by powerpoint presentation, video (native speaker), and printed materials. (6) the evaluation is conducted on the performance basis to assess the ability on Arabic through communicative activity, orally and in writing. The purpose of this study is to be able to describe the politeness of the speech spoken by the characters in the movie "Toni Erdmann" by Maren Ade and their relevance in learning German at school. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. Based on the results of data analysis, there are various forms of politeness speech act in the film "Toni Erdmann" by Maren Ade. Compliance occurs in the maxim of wisdom, maxim of generosity, maxim of praise or appreciation, maxim of simplicity, maxim of agreement, and maxim of sympathy or sympathy. The results of this study can be used as new insights and pragmatic learning concepts. This research is expected to provide positive input for German learning activities, to increase knowledge in aspects of language and to improve language skills.

Teachers must implement in the teaching and learning in the class. Educators in Indonesian language subjects, especially in regions and corners of the country (remote area), still cannot and try to do much, have not tried experimenting with various possible tips, techniques, methods, strategies and learning models. Learning Indonesian especially in the aspect of speaking skills prioritizes providing information about speaking techniques and strategies and very little time is spent on practicing speaking skills. Learning also lacks markers of evaluation that can support speaking skills. The contextual approach is believed to be able to encourage learner motivation to move in learning. The strategy of CTL was used is "Reality Show Academia Student Center" with learning steps named in terms "I Competence Because of Usual" will give a real psychological impact and close to the learners themselves. The steps offered in the learning that adapted the reality show were summarized in the wise sentence, "AKU BISA KARENA BIASA" (I competence becouse of usual). These steps can be explained concretely as follows, they are : 1) Aku = Atur Kekuatan (Arrange the strength), 2) BISA {Can} = BIsikkan seSAma (Communicate to others) , 3) KARENA = KARya sempurNa (Works are perfect), 4) BIASA (Usual) = Bicarakan intisarinya (Talk about the essence).

This present study aims at investigating the patterns used in classroom interaction by English lower secondary teachers. Using qualitative approach, this study was carried out in eight lower secondary schools (SMP) in Jakarta. Moreover, twenty English language experienced teachers with three to thirty-six years of teaching experiences were recruited as participants. Interviews, classroom observations/recording and focus-group discussion were instruments to collect data. For analyzing the data, qualitative data analysis was selected in developing categories and sub-categories of the data. The findings showed that the teachers apply at least three identified interactional patterns in EFL classroom in which modify the IRF structure. The research method used was descriptive qualitative with content analysis techniques. The research data were 78 sentences written by BIPA students at Bina Nusantara University academic year 2020/2021. The results show that BIPA students’ sentences have linguistic creativity in the form of the morphological, syntactic, and semantic levels sentences. At the morphological level, the process of linguistic creativity in words is carried out by (1) inserting foreign terms into sentences, (2) using non-standard words, and (3) abbreviating words. While in phrases, linguistic creativity is done by (1) reversing the structure of the phrase, (2) forming nominal phrases with less common word pairs, and (3) forming nominal phrases by incorporating elements of student culture. The research was conducted during the second semester in the 2015/2016 academic year starting from February up June in 2016. The study design used Elliot's procedure, which comprised seven phases, namely: (a) identifying the initial ideas, (b) finding and analyzing the facts, (c) general planning, (d) Implementing, (e) observing, (f) evaluating, and (g) revising. The data were taken by observation, interview, daily note, and test. The results of the study found that the mean of the pre-test was 65,30, the average score results of the test at the first cycle were 73,25, the average score of the test at the second cycle was 77,40, and the average score of the test at third cycle was 84.1. It concluded that the contextual teaching and learning approach could improve the student's skill in Arabic essay writing.

The research was conducted through descriptive analysis. The analysis of data is the impact of the implementation of the model for the Introduction to linguistics course. Data of the study were collected through observation, questionnaires, and tests. The result of the study shows that using the model can provide the learners' comprehension in learning linguistics concepts. Further, that model has emerged as one of the alternative modes of instruction delivery in the concept of linguistics. This research finding can be used to review current online learning model trends and to explore potential research directions.

The results show that: (1) students’ writing skill using Discovery Learning model is higher than the ones use Guided Learning model; (2) There is an interaction effect between the teaching model and reasoning ability toward writing skill, and (3) students’ writing skill with high reasoning ability and using Discovery Learning model is higher than the students using Guided Learning model, and (4) the level of students’ writing skill with low reasoning ability and using Discovery Learning model is less than the ones use Guided Learning.

The students were not familiar with various speaking activities facilitating them to speak. They read the text to convey ideas and a lack of strategies when speaking. To help the students, task-based learning was adapted through action research in one-semester courses. Fifteen students in the third semester participated in this study. This study involves qualitative method comprehending ethnographic method by Spradley model. This study lasted from November 2015 to June 2016. The data was obtained from participatory observation, interview, documentary analysis, and audiovisual material. This study proves that: (1). the learning objective is considered by the level of Muhâdatsahthat is divided into level 1, level 2, and level 3. (2). Curriculum applies on KKNI basis (National Education Quality Standard). And the syllabus applies Functional Syllabus. (3). Scenario of the learning material covers themes on conversation, vocabulary, the maqala concerning to the most recent development and attractive topic on argumentative debate relating to educational issues. (4). The method involves Eclectic Method that organises Grammar-Translation method, Direct Method, Audio-Lingual Method, and Debating Method. (5). The media of learning is equipped by powerpoint presentation, video (native speaker), and printed materials. The purpose of this study is to be able to describe the politeness of the speech spoken by the characters in the movie "Toni Erdmann" by Maren Ade and their relevance in learning German at school. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. Based on the results of data analysis, there are various forms of politeness speech act in the film "Toni Erdmann" by Maren Ade. Compliance occurs in the maxim of wisdom, maxim of generosity, maxim of praise or appreciation, maxim of simplicity, maxim of agreement, and maxim of sympathy or sympathy. The results of this study can be used as new insights and pragmatic learning concepts. This research is expected to provide positive input for German learning activities, to increase knowledge in aspects of language and to improve language skills.

Teachers must implement in the teaching and learning in the class. Educators in Indonesian language subjects, especially in regions and corners of the country (remote area), still cannot and try to do much, have not tried experimenting with various possible tips, techniques, methods, strategies and learning models. Learning Indonesian especially in the aspect of speaking skills prioritizes providing information about speaking techniques and strategies and very little time is spent on practicing speaking skills. Learning also lacks markers of evaluation that can support speaking skills. The contextual approach is believed to be able to encourage learner motivation to move in learning. The strategy of CTL was used is "Reality Show Academia Student Center" with learning steps named in terms "I Competence Because of Usual" will give a real psychological impact and close to the learners themselves. The steps offered in the learning that adapted the reality show were summarized in the wise sentence, "AKU BISA KARENA BIASA" (I competence becouse of usual). These steps can be explained concretely as follows, they are : 1) Aku = Atur Kekuatan (Arrange the strength), 2) BISA {Can} = BIsikkan seSAma (Communicate to others) , 3) KARENA = KARya sempurNa (Works are perfect), 4) BIASA (Usual) = Bicarakan intisarinya (Talk about the essence).
