The development of a discourse of gender justice rooted in authoritative Islamic texts finds its greatest challenge in translating into praxis, for which the legal sphere, in which patriarchal authority in the name is Islam is seemingly unshakably entrenched, is one of the arenas in which the challenge has to be met. This chapter examines how liberatory interpretations of the Qur’an and Islamic law work in conjunction with activism undertaken by Muslim women’s groups to redress gender inequities, drawing upon examples from North Africa, primarily Egypt and Morocco.
