Carotenoid-containing fruits and vegetables can be classified into three groups: greens, yellow/red, and yellow/orange. The carotenoids present in greens comprise carotenoid epoxides, lutein, α-carotene, and β-carotene. The yellow/red group contains mostly hydrocarbon carotenoids such as lycopene, neurosporene, y-carotene, ζ-carotene, a-carotene, β-carotene, phytofluene, and phytoene. Yellow/orange fruits and vegetables, in addition to the carotenoids in the other two categories, contain a complex mixture of carotenoids including carotenol fatty acid esters. The effect of various methods of food preparation on qualitative and quantitative distribution of carotenoids in common fruits and vegetables is described. An approach to selection of a mixture of carotenoids as chemopreventive agents based on absorption and relative abundance of these compounds in human serum is discussed.

Research paper thumbnail of Structural modification of brominated epoxy resins by reaction with phosphoric or poly(phosphoric acid)

The influence of the reactants ratio on the thermal stability of the modified resins was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The resin obtained from complete esterification of phosphoric acid showed the highest thermal stability. In addition, the resins prepared by reacting phosphoric acid with brominated epoxy resins of different molecular weight were thermally characterized by DSC and TGA. Most of the modified resins were thermally more stable than the corresponding unmodified resins. The chemical reactions that possibly take place during the process are discussed. Furthermore, the structure of the modified resins was investigated by Fourier-transform-infrared (J?l '-IR) spectroscopy.

Research paper thumbnail of Functional polymers. XVI. Synthesis and polymerization of 2(2-hydroxy-5-isopropenylphenyl)-2H-benzotriazole and a new synthesis of 2(2-hydroxy-5-vinylphenyl)2H-benzotriazole

Journal of Polymer Science: Polymer Chemistry Edition, 1982

Diazotization in aqueous hydrochloric acid gave o-nitrophenyl diazonium chloride which was condensed with p-hydroxyacetophenone; the azo compound was reduced to 2(2-hydroxy-5-acetylphenyl)2H-benzotriazole with zinc powder in sodium hydroxide solution and the 2-hydroxy group of the compound was acetylated. Treatment of the acetyl compound with methyl Grignard reagent resulted in the methylation of the 5-acetyl group to 2[2-acetoxy-5(2-hydroxy-2-propyl)pheny1]2H-benzotriazole which was then dehydrated with potassium hydrogen sulfate to the desired 2(2-hydroxy-5-isopropenylphenyl)2H-benzotriazole. This monomer did not homopolymerize, but was copolymerized readily with styrene, methyl methacrylate, and n-butyl acrylate with azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator. 2(2-Acetoxy-5-acetylphenyl)2H-benzotriazole was also reduced with sodium borohydride to form 2[2-acetoxy-5-(1-hydroxyethyl)phenyl]2Hbenzotriazole which was dehydrated and hydrolyzed to the known 2(2-hydroxy-5-vinylphenyl)-2H-benzotriazole. This route provides a novel and simpler synthesis of 2(2-hydroxy-5-vinylphenyl)2H-benzotriazole.

Research paper thumbnail of Polyfunctional epoxies: Part II. Nonrubber versus rubber-toughened brominated formulations for graphite composites

Polymer Composites, 1985

Initial screening of carboxy-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (CTBN) rubber-toughened brominate... more Initial screening of carboxy-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (CTBN) rubber-toughened brominated formulations for graphite composites has been reported previously. This study is a further investigation, focusing on the performance of the brominated polymeric additives as a potential flexibilizing agent for graphite composites, using different molecular weights of the Br source. Increasing segment lengths of the polymeric backbone chain of brominated polymeric additives (BPA) are examined in a new development, trifunctional epoxy resin and is compared with a 10 percent rubber-toughened formulation of the same epoxy resin. Results show that when the Br content in the graphite composite was increased without the use of rubber, the mechanical properties improved. Mechanical and other properties of the graphite composites are discussed.

Rubber-toughened brominated and nonbrominated formulations were compared for their mechanical performance, environmental stability, thermochemical behavior, and flame retardancy. It was found that the new resin performs almost the same way as the TGDDM does, but has some improved properties. The fracture toughness of the various formulations was studied carefully and the overall performance of the new resin is discussed.
