However, multiple management systems are established individually to manage other risks without any form of interoperability to function as one integrated management system, to have a holistic view of the different risks in an organisation. This study will review if an integrated management system can be developed by looking at the interoperability of existing management systems to define a common standard/language across all individual management systems, to work as one integrated system. A survey was developed and rolled out via aviation organisations towards airlines to capture the quantitative data on how management systems are implemented, as these data are currently unavailable. The main contribution of this article is that it provides an overview of how management systems are implemented within airlines today, how they work together, and where interoperability could be improved between different systems. Due to the need for more data for academics and the industry, and the lesser research interest compared to its passenger counterpart, limited empirical research on air cargo market dynamics has been conducted. Live flight and aircraft data were collected for five consecutive years to reconstruct the air cargo network and capacity. Air cargo sales tonnes data were collected and introduced as these data eliminate double counting of transfer route volumes. Both datasets were used and compared to analyse the air cargo trade imbalances. The major findings indicate an imbalance in demand on most of the 110 studied region pair combinations. The supply data indicate a high imbalance for freighter capacity, a relatively smaller imbalance for integrator capacity and a limited imbalance for the wide-body belly capacity. The data indica...

He presented the findings of his research group at the University of Antwerp which aims to understand the air cargo strategies and its main drivers, as well as to assist airlines in defining strategy possibilities.

More input factors are used, while less flights are handled. Traffic is expected to continue to grow, putting pressure on the current European model for ANS provision. To develop a model for the future, a profound understanding of the ANS market is needed. This paper identifies the market structure, its players and their relationships through a review of existing scientific literature as well as available reports published by air navigation service providers (ANSPs) and ANS regulators. The main findings are that European ANSPs have established a geographical monopoly mainly due to legally set up entry barriers and perceived economies of scale. This leads to a situation in which market power towards airspace users remains relatively high despite recent policy efforts. However, possibilities to open up the ANS market can be identified, but require further research.

While existing research has mainly looked into the existence of economies of scale or into efficiency of functional airspace blocks (FABs), there is a need for a research shift towards other potential consolidation scenarios. The potential gains of such merger scenarios has not yet been analysed thoroughly, which is the main contribution of this paper. The results suggest that the potential merger gains of the analysed scenarios are mainly due to improvements in technical efficiency which could possibly also be achieved by improving the current ANSP performance scheme.

While previous studies using parametric methods made abstraction of the multiproduct nature of the ANS industry, this paper tries to fill that gap by estimating a multiproduct translog cost function. The existence of economies of scale is evaluated from the estimated cost function at the sample means as well as for individual ANSPs in the panel. The results suggest that most European ANSPs produced, on average, at constant economies of scale or small diseconomies of scale over the period 2011-2015, while cost complementarities do not seem to exist.

However, in the last decade a defined strategy for air cargo has gained a key position in the strategies of most combination airlines, contributing largely to the cash and profit levels of these airlines. The global air cargo industry is nowadays a mature industry with over 60 billion USD in direct revenues. The strategic context is, therefore, far beyond the basic entrepreneurial framework in which an emerging and young industry tends to operate. This chapter aims to gain an enhanced insight into the strategies of airlines that transport cargo, either in the bellies of passenger aircraft or in full-freighter aircraft. A Cluster Analysis generates a typology of seven representative clusters of air cargo operators’ strategy models. The typology proposes a spectrum of strategies for air cargo, ranging from the cluster group “Carpet Sellers” up to the “Cargo Stars” cluster. While the former tend to be th...
