When operational dentistry is necessary, it is now done in the most conservative way possible, with the least amount of tooth structure being harmed. This novel method of caries cares shifts the focus from detecting carious lesions as cavities (and a recurring cycle of restorations) to diagnosing the oral ecological imbalance and affecting biological changes in the biofilm. After stopping the disease process, MI aims to restore lost tooth structure and function, while optimizing the tooth's healing capacity. “Caries treatment has evolved from G.V. Black's extension for prevention to minimally intrusive owing to advancements in dental adhesives and restorative materials, increased knowledge of the caries process and remineralization, and changes in the incidence of caries. A decrease in ca...

It is characterised by round or shallow oval ulcers, less than 10 mm in diameter, surrounded by a thin erythematous halo. It involves non-keratinized mucosa such as the labial and buccal mucosa, the ventral surface or borders of the tongue and the floor of the mouth, but it is uncommon to occur on the keratinised mucosa. It heals spontaneously within 10-14 days without scarring. There is no curative remedy to prevent its recurrence; also, available modalities only reduce the symptoms and severity of the lesion. AIM: Since these lesions may be extremely painful, we decided to estimate the pain-relieving and healing properties of low energy level laser therapy using diode laser 660 nm on MiRAS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty healthy patients suffering from minor aphthous ulcers were randomly selected from the Out-Patient Clinic of Oral Medicine Depart...

Objective: Report the experience of the Biosafety and Infrastructure Commission of the Dentistry Course at the State University of Montes Claros – Unimontes, in the performance and creation of a new biosafety protocol during the COVID-19 pandemic. Experience Report: Although there was a previously established and standardized guide, it was necessary to develop a new document. A thorough analysis of the literature, laws, ordinances and technical standards of the Ministry of Health, State and Municipal Secretariats, Biosafety Protocols of other Higher Education Institutions and Class Entities was carried out. After several online meetings, from March to July 2020, the Biosafety Protocol for the Dentistry Course at Unimontes in Times of COVID-19 was developed. Conclusion: Health car...

A variety of different modalities have been proposed for removing hyperpigmentation involving surgical scraping, gingival autograft, cryotherapy, electrosurgery, and lasers. However, the microneedling technique is a nonsurgical procedure that creates microholes to facilitate the penetration of topical medications across the connective tissues. Case Description. A healthy female patient aged 25 years with a pigmented gingiva seeking gingival depigmentation. On examination, a dark brown ribbon of hyperpigmentation was observed within the mandibular attached gingiva. The case was diagnosed as physiological moderate gingival pigmentation ( pigmentation index score = 3 ). The patient was interested in achieving aesthetic results with minimally invasive, nonexpensive procedures. Based on the patient’s concerns, the microneedling technique using vitamin C was sugg...

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Riyadh city between April and July 2021. About 200 non-smokers Saudi men were recruited in the study which was allocated into two groups (100 subjects each); bodybuilders and non-bodybuilders. Oral health indicators like dental caries, plaque, and gingival indices were measured. Results: D and DMFT were higher in the bodybuilder group than in the non-bodybuilder [4.47 vs 0.89 for D, and 8.75 vs 4.58 for DMFT]. Also, P.I. and G.I. showed the same result. 60 % of participants were taking protein only, while 37% of them were taking a combination of protein, creatine, and amino acids. Only 3% were taking creatine. A positive significant association was found between the frequency of protein intake and D,...

Although there are many presenting treatments, some of them proved its failure. Recently, the use of photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been expanding due to its numerous advantages, as it is safe, convenient, and non-invasive and has toxic effect towards selective tissues. This article provides comprehensive review on OLP, its etiology, clinical features and recent non-pharmacological treatments. We also describe the topical PDT and its mechanisms. Our purpose was to evaluate the efficacy of PDT in treatment of OLP through collecting the data of the related clinical studies. We searched in PubMed website for the clinical studies that were reported from 2000 to 2014 using specific keywords: "photodynamic therapy" and "treatment of oral lichen planus". Inclusion criteria were English publications only were concerned. In the selected studies of photodynamic treatment, adult pati...

Despite the considerable number of new biomaterials that develop with more advantages and fewer disadvantages for bone regeneration, the cost and surgical approach difficulties are still the main obstacles that we tried to overcome using the novel membrane. AIM: Our research aimed to assess histologically the bone formation using the novel membrane in experimental bone defects. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Our study was conducted on ten mongrel dogs. Each animal presented two groups. The first group was at the left side of the animal mandible which received Bio-Oss only while the right side received Bio-Oss and was covered by the novel non-resorbable membrane. These dogs were sacrificed (3, 6, 9 and 12 weeks) postoperatively for histological assessment of healing ...

However, curcumin characteristics have been described to be effective in reducing inflammatory mediators and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP). But, due to its poor solubility and bioavailability, a chemically modified curcumin (CMC 2.24) has been used. Objective The purpose of this research is to review and analyze the animal attempts which investigate the impact of CMC2.24 on periodontitis. Materials and Methods Our study was based on reviewing the English preclinical studies using CMC2.24 on an induced periodontal disease which were published up to 2020, only randomized control trials (RCTs) were included. Databases were used from electronic websites including PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google scholar. Results Seven experimental trials involving 1...

In this chapter, we explore the applications of botulinum toxin in dentistry for either cosmetic or therapeutic purpose, such as gummy smile (high lip line), parafunctional habits, temporomandibular disorders and facial pain. It is considered as a non-invasive, conservative and affordable alternative treatment in comparison to surgical procedures. Although, the effect of BT is temporary that lasts for 4-6 months, it is preferred by most of the patients as it gives positive significant results that meet their desires with minimal side effects.

AIM: In this context, we elevated in this pilot study the effect of HA on soft tissue healing and bone repair of dental sockets (DS) as well as the postoperative pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten individuals of both genders (80% females and 20% males) with age range 18–44 years, were included who were diagnosed with two non-restorable teeth (total sockets n = 20). A split-mouth study design was performed where the DS of each patient were divided into Group A (study group): Topical oral HA gel (Gengigel®) was applied into sockets while Group B (control group): Sockets were left untreated. Study variables were evaluated including socket length, socket healing scores (healing index), and post-operative pain in both groups at day 1, 5, and 10 for each patient. RESULTS: There were no statistically signif...
