PCR amplification was done using 2 sets of primers: B4/B5 and JPF/JPR. Extraction of Brucella DNA using the commercial kit failed; therefore, this technique was discontinued. The laboratory extraction method was successful and more economic. Results: The technique showed high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. The PCR positivity increased significantly (P=0.001) with increasing the positive standard tube agglutination titer and showed 100% positivity in patients with positive blood culture. Conclusions: An accurate and sensitive PCR technique was established. Based on the results, the PCR method is recommended as an alternative to culture for the diagnosis of brucellosis. A large-scale study to evaluate this PCR technique to screen for brucellosis in Egypt is needed.

Gadolinium is widely used in medicine (nuclear magnetic resonance imaging) and in industry (manufacture of CD Rom, video players, etc...). In this work, subcellular localization of gadolinium has been studied using conventional transmission electron microscopy. After its parenteral administration to lactating female wistar rats, this element has been found in the lysosomes of the mammary glandular epithelial cells as very electron dense granulations. No deposits were observed within the lysosomes of cells from control rats. These granules correspond probably to an insoluble intralysosomal gadolinium phosphate salt as was shown for other elements such as gal...

This objective is a part of the current work we undertake in the project ALS-PL (Adaptive Learning Systems for the Programming Language). What interest us more particularly in this paper is the question of the LOs and the granularity of the contents for a reuse and an efficient search. We are also interested in the impact of the semantics by taking into account educational standards, in order to elaborate a semantic model of the Los, and therefore an educational semantic Web.

Our studies comprised 72 patients with Klinefelter syndrome and 47,XXY karyotype. The majority of the patients were young between the ages of 16 to 28 years. Plain skull radiographs were taken in the frontal and lateral projections. Several abnormalities were observed on skull radiographs of the Klinefelter patients. The most frequent was a premature fusion of the coronal sutures that occurred in 54 of 62 younger patients. In 42 cases extensive calcifications of these sutures were observed. The calcified sutures were dense and widened. In 24 patients the inner table in the anterior part or the parietal bone displayed a marked disruption with thinning of the calvaria at this place. In the posterior part of the parietal bone in 21 patients the inner table was thickened and excessively dense. On frontal...

The annealing temperature was varied and changes in electrical resistivity, hardness and microstructure were followed. The decreases in resistivity and hardness after a single annealing are attributed to recrystallization, a hypothesis which is confirmed by microstructural observations. The recrystallization temperature, temperature range of recrystallization and estimated energy released increase with solute content and type (in the order Sb, Sn, Pb). The greater the deviation from the Hume-Rothery rules for substitutional solutions, the greater is the effect which solute addition appears to have on the recrystallization process.

The proposed mechanism defines a new fast recovery process that ensures efficient resource utilization. Since the IETF protection switching mechanism follows a pre-planned approach, i.e., it selects a backup path only once at the LSP

We have enrolled in a cross-sectional study all consecutive patients presenting with the diagnosis of RA according to the 1987 ACR criteria, and during a 5-month period, patients were included in 11 centers across northern Algeria. Demographics, clinical data, and health assessment questionnaires (HAQ) were collected for each patient. We have estimated means, standard deviations, and 95 % confidence intervals for all parameters. Of the 249 patients (213 females and 36 males) enrolled in the study, 10 (4 %) had juvenile onset of the disease. The mean age was 50.1 ± 14.5 years, and the mean duration of RA was 8.4 ± 7.8 years. In terms of comorbidities, 18.9 % of patients reported hypertension and 5.2 % had diabetes. The mean DAS28 at inclusion was 4.3 (95 % CI 4.1-4.5); 14.0 % were in remission (DAS28 ≤ 2.6). The mean HAQ score was 0.81 ± 0.82. Rheumatoid factor was positive in 78.5 % of cases, and anti-citrullinated protein/peptide antibodies, when measured, was positive in 69.0 % of cases. Seronegative patients were older and had a relatively less severe disease. For treatment, 89.7 % of patients were taking disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs and only 4 % were taking biologics (rituximab); 90.8 % of patients were taking glucocorticoids, and none of the patients satisfied the recommended calcium intake guidelines. RA in Algeria is more common in women. Compared to reports from Western countries, RA in Algeria appears to be less aggressive, with more dominant seronegative oligoarthritis forms. The remission rate is comparable to that of Western populations.

This retrospective, multicenter case series of ocular injury due to cluster bombs was conducted for 3 years after the war in South Lebanon (July 2006). Data were gathered from the reports to the Information Management System for Mine Action. There were 308 victims of clusters bombs; 36 individuals were killed, of which 2 received ocular lacerations and; 272 individuals were injured with 18 receiving ocular injury. These 18 surviving individuals were assessed by the authors. Ocular injury occurred in 6.5% (20/308) of cluster bomb victims. Trauma to multiple organs occurred in 12 of 18 cases (67%) with ocular injury. Ocular findings included corneal or scleral lacerations (16 eyes), corneal foreign bodies (9 eyes), corneal decompensation (2 eyes), ruptured cataract (6 eyes), and intravitreal foreign bodies (10 eyes). The corneas of one patient had extreme attenuation of the endothelium. Ocular injury occurred in 6.5% of cluster bomb victims and 67% of the patients with ocular injury sustained trauma to multiple organs. Visual morbidity in civilians is an additional reason for a global ban on the use of cluster bombs.

Alterations in thyroid hormone levels are also associated with changes in body weight but the effect of thyroid hormone deficiency on serum leptin in humans is unclear. The aim of this study was to measure leptin levels and to investigate their associations with thyroid hormones in 22 women with severe hypothyroidism after total thyroidectomy, and in a group of 22 healthy euthyroid control female subjects matched for age and body mass index (BMI). Their plasma leptin, free thyroxine, triiodothyronine and TSH were measured. Leptin levels in subjects and controls were (pg/mL) 18761.64+/-16973.96 and 18729.19+/-18014.05, respectively, p=0.9; leptin did not correlate with free thyroxine, triiodothyroinine and TSH: r=0.1039 and p=0.6453, r=0.0113 and p=0.9602, and r=-0.0525 and p=0.8165 for leptin and FT4, leptin and FT3, and leptin and TSH, respectively in subjects; r=-0.00056 and p=0.9980, r=0.248727 and p=0.2643, and r=-0.046919 and p=0.8357 for leptin and FT4, leptin and FT3, and leptin and TSH, respectively in controls. Leptin levels did not differ between subjects and controls and they did not correlate with thyroid hormones. Leptin levels are not influenced by hypothyroidism and do not correlate with thyroid hormones in euthyroid and hypothyroid women.

The sol–gel polymerisation of the inorganic components was achieved by base catalysation using NaOH. The resultant base coating (CGA) was further modified using two different corrosion inhibitors: Moly-white 101-ED and Hfucophos Zapp yielding coatings (CGA-M) and (CGA-Z) respectively. The corrosion resistant efficiency of these coatings for the protection of mild steel sheets in 3·5%NaCl electrolyte was assessed using AC and DC electrochemical methods, notably, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and DC polarisation scans. Based on the results, the order of corrosion protection of the above coatings was in the order: CGA-M>>CGA-Z>CGA.

Reason for which we have investigated the subcellular localization of one of these elements, the samarium, in the mammary gland of lactating female wistar rats using two very sensitive methods of observation and microanalysis, the transmission electron microscopy and the secondary ion mass spectrometry. The ultrastructural study showed the presence of electron dense deposits in the lactating mammary glandular epithelial cell lysosomes of the samarium-treated rats, but no loaded lysosomes were observed in those of control rats. The microanalytical study allowed both the identification of the chemical species present in those deposits as samarium isotopes ((152) Sm(+)) and the cartography of its distribution. Our results confirm the previous ones showing that lysosomes of the glandular epithelial cells are the site of the intracellular concentration of foreign elements such as gallium. The intralysosomal deposits observed in the mammary glandular cells of the samarium-treated rats are similar in their form and density to those observed with the same element in other varieties of cells, such as liver, bone marrow, and spleen cells. Our ultrastructural and microanalytical results and those obtained in previous studies allow deducing that the intralysosomal deposits are very probably composed of an insoluble samarium phosphate salt.
