In this essay, Itala Vivan looks back at the way African literatures have been received in Italy ... more In this essay, Itala Vivan looks back at the way African literatures have been received in Italy and analyses the features of such reception within the frame of the European approach to postcolonial literature on one side, and, on the other, considering the long survival of a colonial mentality in Italy. The essay embraces a long period of time and shows the growth of a more open and curious attitude towards the African literary production, although a certain inclination for exoticism is still visible in contemporary Italy.

La fortuna delle letterature africane in Italia nei cinquant'anni della postcolonialità, 1960-2010, 2012

La storia della ricezione delle letterature africane in Italia si snoda secondo linee dettate da ... more La storia della ricezione delle letterature africane in Italia si snoda secondo linee dettate da un lato dalla peculiare percezione dell’Africa che si e avuta nell’arco di mezzo secolo nella cultura del nostro paese, e dall’altro lato dalle modalita dell’industria editoriale italiana che ha condizionato le scelte delle opere da tradurre e introdurre nel mercato nazionale. L’analisi si basa su un quadro di riscontri di matrice metodologica culturalista e, contemporaneamente, su una pluridecennale esperienza personale nel campo della critica letteraria postcoloniale e in quello dell’attivita editoriale. Per quest’ultimo settore si fa riferimento alla storica collana Il lato dell’ombra , ideata e diretta dall’autrice, che fra il 1987 e il 1996 porto in Italia una prima galleria di classici africani e caraibici, e al susseguente lavoro di consulenza editoriale a largo raggio.
