An approach is proposed for supporting users to solve scheduling problems, by choosing the combination of physical manufacturing system configuration and the material handling system settings. The approach considers two alternative manufacturing scheduling configurations in a two stage product oriented manufacturing system, exploring the hybrid flow shop (HFS) and the parallel flow shop (PFS) environments. For illustrating the application of the proposed approach an industrial case from the automotive components industry is studied. The main aim of this research to compare results of study of production scheduling in the hybrid and the parallel flow, taking into account the makespan minimization criterion. Thus the HFS and the PFS performance is compared and analyzed, mainly in terms of the makespan, as the transportation times vary. The study shows that the performance HFS is clearly better when the work stati...

In Intensive Care Units (ICU), some of the biggest challenges relate both to the number and the different types of available data sources. Even though in such a setting the values for some variables are easy to collect, data collection is still performed manually in particular instances. In order to improve the DMP in ICU, a Pervasive Intelligent Decision Support System, called INTCare was deployed in the ICU of Centro Hospitalar do Porto in Portugal. This system altered the way information is collected and presented. Moreover, the tracking system deployed as a specific module of INTCare – Electronic Nursing Record (ENR) is made accessible anywhere and anytime. The system allows for the calculation of the critical events regarding five variables that are typically monitored in an ICU. Specifically, the INTCare tracking sy...

The first had three editions, two in the 16th century and one in the 15th century. There is a copy in the Library of Rio de Janeiro that is supposed to be the 1488's edition referred in Inocêncio's Dictionary. The only known copy of the Tratado de Confissom was, according to the colophon, printed in Chaves in 1489 and it is, in the absence of a safe proof concerning the precedent work, the first book printed in the Portuguese language. Through a computerized linguistic analysis, one can conclude that the text was written between the end of the 14th century and the beginning of the 15th century and it is an adaptation of one or more works in Castilian, which contradicts a great majority of the opinions presented so far. In our study, we will compare the two works from the thematic and linguistic point of view, trying to verify similarities and differences, and stressing the importance of these works to the Portuguese language and culture.

Understanding the molecular nature of this disease and its precursor lesions has been under intense investigation and our review attempts to highlight recent progress in this field of cancer research. First, host-related genetic susceptibility is dealt with genes involved in inflammation and carcinogen metabolism. Next, role of overexpression of a proinflammatory cytokine (interleukin-1beta) and deletion of a cell-cell adhesion molecule (E-cadherin) are described in experimental mouse models of gastric carcinogenesis. Finally, the role of stem cells in gastric cancer is covered.

In the Automation Laboratory several kits have been implemented for local and remote control tests. The approach includes the design and implementation of an industrial network where the common communications protocols can be tested: the Automation Network Locker (ANL). To facilitate the monitoring and control of the network, WALC (Web Assisted Laboratory for Control Engineering on-line Education) interface platform was developed. This allows the remote monitoring and control of the pedagogic kits to complement the teaching/learning automation to undergraduate engineering students. The security of network access is also taken into account in order to limit and control the number of users that can access it. An on-line questionnaire accessed at the end of each semester, allows an actualization and to follow the students' feedback.
