During the first half of the twentieth century, the generally accepted and disseminated views in ... more During the first half of the twentieth century, the generally accepted and disseminated views in Sweden concerning women’s rights and their position in the social structure were based on relatively stereotyped gender concepts. A woman’s biological ability to give birth was presumed to endow her with an obvious suitability and an unequivocal responsibility for childcare.1 The home became the private place of work for the married woman’s unremunerated labor, and her husband was her protector and sponsor. The mothers themselves were hemmed in by rules and regulations, which they had little opportunity to influence. But in the public debate, they were considered responsible for what they did or did not do and for any consequences this may have for the family and society.
